Pitch Perfect (2012)
A Pleasant Surprise
I went in to this film not knowing very much about it other than what my girlfriend told me. I knew that it was about singing, it was a comedy and it had Anna Kendrick in it. i have enjoyed the films that i have seen Anna Kendrick in before so i was mildly interested in it. Anna Kendrick plays her usual sulky self until she finds something she's really interested in, and then she gets happier, less annoying and actually is a nice person. the film itself is funny enough and i found myself really enjoying the characters.
The singing is rather good but it is quite slow at the beginning but certainly makes a vast improvement towards the end. The love story is a nice side-line in the film but doesn't really add that much to it. I did enjoy this film very much but wanted more of the battle singing than the choir based singing.
I would certainly recommend this film to anyone just looking for a nice distraction or on a date, it is a nice simple comedy with some good singing and some great songs thrown in.
Spring Breakers (2012)
Not what i was expecting
This film was quite simply not what i was expecting. it had so much potential but did not take it. the cast looked very good on paper, and the inclusion of sex certainly did not go against this film for me, but apart from a few scenes, the nudity was not of the main cast but of random people on the beach. don't get me wrong i still liked the nudity but as it wasn't of the main cast it wasn't really needed.
The story was very unrealistic but i can handle that, but the story never really came together, nor did it start until about 30 minutes in to the movie, by then i had pretty much lost interest, even though i really liked the cast they just couldn't draw me in emotionally. we are supposed to feel sorry for these girls but i just don't.
The ending wasn't right, it just didn't feel like a proper ending, and one of the worst endings i have seen in a while.
Don't get me wrong though, it wasn't a terrible film, the voice over, although done many times already, was good. it brought a darker tone to the movie and actually kept me interested, without that i probably would have walked out.
Overall, if you want to see a film with loads of tits, loads of ass, drugs and violence then you probably won't be disappointed. if you are big fans of the cast and hope to enjoy the movie you may be a little let down.
Evil Dead (2013)
Not bad at all
I went in to this film having seen the originals and with reading some reviews. needless to say some of the reviews were unfavourable. it is at the heart of it a remake. a terrible word in modern cinema but one which has become quite common place. i have seen quite a few remakes and this certainly was not the worst.
Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell both were producers for this film so it had quite a few nods to the original, and in my opinion did not let it down. the acting was quite good but with most modern horror films it was a pretty unknown cast.
It is a bloody film, going for a more traditional fake blood approach instead of cgi, which in my opinion makes the film more enjoyable.
This was a good cinema film, it had scares, it had blood and most of all we had fun watching it. it is not an Oscar winner of course but certainly a film worth seeing.
