Ripley: VIII - Narcissus (2024)
Lost credibility
This has been a wonderful adaptation overall. Beautifully acted and shot, dripping with style.
However, it lost its way in this episode. It was completely ludicrous that Inspector Ravini did *not* recognise Ripley, under his poorly executed disguise. I had been happy to go along for the ride, having seen both previous cinematic adaptations (Purple Noon, The Talented Mr Ripley) and read Patricia Highsmith's novel. However, when we got to this particular scene, all credibility went out the window. This was really poorly conceived - Ripley's appearance and voice would have been so utterly recognisable and familiar to the Inspector; unfathomable that he was not recognised.
Only Murders in the Building: The Last Day of Bunny Folger (2022)
A dull episode from a previously wonderful series
This episode was really, really dull, up until the last 5 to 10 minutes or so. Flashback was always going to be a risk, and unfortunately turned out to be a real disappointment I'm afraid to say. This episode took a long time to say very little. Wallowing around in the overarching unpleasantness in Bunny's character, and in others' too. Very pedestrian directing, writing and pacing. Because of that, the humour was muted and pathos blunted.
We have been plodding, plodding along in this lacklustre season. Had been such a fan of this series previously, but there is little true intrigue, nor any sense of urgency, this time round.
The Staircase: America's Sweetheart or: Time Over Time (2022)
Disappointing
Top notch acting and such an intriguing premise. However, this episode is, frankly, a waste of time. This is replayed footage from the first few episodes. Very little added value. Whole series was ultimately indulgent and bloated.
Clue (1985)
Comedic gem
A really underrated movie. Very funny quips, witty one liners, and farcical goings on. Look for the delightful Madeline Kahn's famous 'flames on the side of my face' scene. Has been a favourite of mine and my family's for many years.
Dynasty: The Baby (1982)
Cat fight!
The first of the celebrated Krystle-Alexis cat fights featured in this episode. It's a doozy! 10/10 just for that. All the other subplots also gather momentum, particularly regarding Fallon's paternity, Krystle's miscarriage, Claudia's search for her daughter.
