Ghost Town (2008)
Uplifting and Entertaining
Gervais puts forward a very strong argument for him being considered as A-list talent in this movie, while I am a fan of his other work, there was a new depth and humanity in this which raised the film, making him and the film as a whole a joy to watch, while there is moments of sentiment it's not overtly sentimental and there is a lot of pleasure and joy to be had watching this movie. I'm hope that this film will become a much-loved and cherished movie,it has all the right ingredients to become a minor classic, one to be returned to and enjoyed, it's gets my highest recommendation, which is, as I left the cinema, I wanted to see it again...
Ordinary Decent Criminal (2000)
Very poor effort
Another poor effort by a top American actor to recreate an authentic Irish accent. The overall effect was cringe-worthy for any Irish audiences. I turned this movie off, couldn't watch it all. It's loosely based on the story which is much better relayed in 'The General'. So if you want to know the story of one of the most notorious criminals in recent Irish history, look out for that version with Brendan Gleeson. (incidentally, John Voight does a excellent regional accent in that film, so it can be done!). Not worth your money, if you like authenticity in any form. It also tries to squeeze laughs form something which was actually quite grim. It's about as historically realistic as Disney's Pocohontas....
