I had previously seen the musical Sweeney Todd on stage and I absolutely loved it. The dark element was thick on stage and the actors were amazing singers as well. Once I heard that it was going to be a major movie I didn't think that it could be improved upon. Happily, I was wrong.
Tim Burton's version of Sweeney Todd was a refreshing take on an already amazingly dark story. The movie magic only enhanced the storyline instead of detracting from it as it has in so many other films. The cast was incredibly selected, the perfect people were cast for the perfect parts. I especially liked the fact that two Harry Potter villains in Alan Rickman (HP:Severus Snape/ST:Judge Turpin) and Timothy Spall (HP:Peter Pettigrew/ST:Beadle Bamford) ended up being two amazing Sweeney Todd villains as well. Not to mention, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter couldn't have played Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett better.
Aside from the acting, Stephen Sondheim worked his magic with an already great Sweeney Todd score and it was incredible. Two thumbs up and an excellent 10 from me, this version of Sweeney Todd is an absolute must-see. Be ready for blood!
