Hotaru no haka (1988)
This movie is just outstanding.
It is haunting and beautiful at the same time.
I was completely engrossed with it.
The film makes you completely feel for the characters.
The beauty of the film is completely amazing.
Give this movie a shot even if you do not like Anime. You will not be disappointed. I have not watched much Anime, but now I'm looking forward to finding more movies like this.
There is not a whole lot that can be said about this wonderful movie that hasn't been said over and over again.
It won Sundance? Oh that makes sense now.
I'd have to say that almost everything about Primer is abysmal.
It's being said by a large amount of people that the only reason it won Sundance was strictly due to political reasons. Recently, Sundance has been under fire for being too commercial and too Hollywood.
Sundance is getting heavily criticized for being too commercial, more and more big budget movies are being submitted, scores of movie stars are descending upon the festival, Peter Biskind's book criticizing Sundance is published, and then all of a sudden a movie is submitted that has a minuscule budget by a first time filmmaker. It was a purely political move to give it the award.
There's a reason why the critics hate this movie. There's a reason why most people who watch this movie think it's horrendous. It is. The script is riddled with problems, about 60% of the movie is out of focus, the audio is muffled and garbled, and continuity problems abound.
There's a reason why people like this movie as well. It's fun to cheer for an underdog. Shane Carruth has such a cute little story about making it.
I believe in supporting independent films, but I believe that Primer actually did more harm to the Dallas independent film market then good.
It's politically incorrect to say this movie is terrible. It didn't cost much to shoot. It was made by a first time filmmaker. It's like when a child asks you how the portrait they drew looks. You respond by saying great, because that's the best the can do. It's a good picture for a 5 year old, but hardly a work of art. Primer is best summed up like that.
