Love Dusty's Style
13 February 2024
There's something about Dusty's kind of dry (and maybe a little bit awkward) delivery that gets me. I think the word is deadpan? Whatever it is, it's good.

He's the rare kind of comedian who can get laughs without being crass, talking politics, or using exaggerated physical humor. That's not to say that those things are bad; plenty of my favorite comedians use those tactics but it's refreshing that Dusty doesn't, and he doesn't have to.

He's able to tell stories with a funny punchline without getting playing on people's hot-topic emotions. And while his comedy is clean, it's far from simple. He's got his own kind of flow, the timing is smart, and the way he arranges everything is intelligent.

In short, I definitely had a good time.

Easy yet not boring
3 November 2023
I liked this show a lot more than I though I would. I thought it was going to be light fluff that I'd barely pay attention to yet it was quite fulfilling instead. The show tackled a lot of hard topics such as the loss of a loved one, the confusing emotions that can bring, complicated family dynamics, etc tactfully and tastefully.

Despite the heavier subject matter, it didn't feel depressing, though, and there were a lot of cute moments to balance it all out. Amalia Williamson did a great job tying the show together and I also really enjoyed Spencer Macpherson. I look forward to seeing both in future works. While I dont think the show was perfect, everyone acted well and recommend it for "easy" yet interesting viewing.

Better Than Hill House if You Like Slow Burns
25 October 2023
I actually like this series more than Hill House. It reminded me of classic Victorian ghost stories. While there were certainly parts that creeped me out and were disturbing, the story is about so much more than "oh no! There's ghosts in the house! -insert jump scare-" It's about the people and the setting, how they all develop and grow (or wither). It's the only horror I can think of that had me crying at the end (in a good way).

Everyone's performances were top notch. I was particularly impressed with the children as child actors -understandably- have a tendency to go way too big and they successfully kept things subtle.

This is one show I can see myself going back to at some point to see what little clues I missed along the way and Im looking forward to more from the creators.

Andrea Riseborough Blew Me Away
25 October 2023
I really was not sure what to expect going into this film. I do wish that the synopsis offered on Netflix included something about alcoholism to give a head's up so I could have been better prepared for the absolute gut-wrenching story that was about to unfold. As a child of an addict, it was difficult at times yet worth the watch without a doubt. It was actually kind of nice because it ends so much differently than it did for my family story. Andrea Riseborough as Leslie "Lee" was absolute perfection. Many times, this type of story is done in big, dramatic all-out performances (not to say the story wasn't dramatic because it certainly was in the realest way possible), but she was able to convey deep human reactions with just a facial expression. Much of the presentation, both of the actors as well as the production, was subtly and tastefully done. It was raw and authentic, yet hopeful and had me rooting for Leslie. Just stunning and heartfelt. It's truly one of the best marriages of role and performance I've seen.

done at episode 4
14 October 2023
I really enjoyed the beginning to this series. It had so many elements that I love i.e. Fantasy, horror, revenge (particularly by female characters), period pieces, etc. As a lover of horror, I'm no stranger to gore or disturbing imagery, however, episode 4 did me in. Without spoiling it, there's a scene that is so utterly bizarre, grotesque, and ridiculous that I wish I could scrub it from my brain. The characters' reactions made no sense either. By that point, the plot had gotten rather muddled and the pacing is off. The story relies almost entirely on shock value and seems to be spinning out of control anyways, so I don't feel as though I'm losing out.

One of my fave comedy sets ever
26 April 2023
This special turned out to be one of my favorite comedy sets that I have ever seen. I had gotten into a minor car accident earlier in the day and just really needed something to cheer me up. My partner and I were having trouble finding something that fit the bill, came upon this, watched the trailer, and I was laughing 15 seconds in. Clearly, it was the winner.

Taylor has such a gift when it comes to discussing serious topics in a light way. She's able to share her opinions without coming across as preachy. Her timing, man, her timing is impeccable. She hits all the other comedy must-haves without it feeling formulaic. We were both truly impressed with her writing abilities. The time just flew by.

So thanks to Taylor, for all her dedication to the craft, and for making me laugh after an awful day. Looking forward to the next one!

Unexpected Yet Good
26 April 2023
Some reviewers are complaining that this docudrama has been altered for millennials. I would like to take this time to remind everyone that millennials are roughly 30 to 40 years old. Perhaps they're thinking of Gen Zer's.

That said, I would definitely agree that this series has been modernized. I certainly wasn't expecting to hear pop songs and newer slang. However, after an adjustment period, I rather enjoyed it.

I've read a lot of historical fiction and nonfiction about Henry VIII, Anne, and the other "characters" as well as watched movies, documentaries, etc. I very much appreciated hearing the tale told from Anne's POV, and if the modernization makes it more accessible to newer audiences, great. We already have so many traditional forms of this particular section of history; it was rather refreshing to see the creators try something different.

I also really liked the blend of re-enactments with the historians commentary. Overall, I believe this rendition humanized Anne much more than many others have.

Fooled By The Trailer
22 April 2023
So I watched trailer knowing nothing about this comedian, thought it was funny and decided to give it a go. I'll never know if the trailer included the only funny bit or not because my spouse and I turned it off relatively quickly. The jokes we did see were so tired and played out. It was like watching a hokey special from the 90s. The whole bit about marital discord was tolerable, though not really funny in my opinion (talking about hating your partner has been done to death and there was nothing original in her bit).

Then she got into the wine-mom thing. Ah yes, being daydrunk and making your kids feel uncomfortable is soooo hilarious . Maybe its relatable for the wine-moms out there (aka alcoholics who need therapy rather than a bottle) but we found it cringey and outdated, and im really not sure what the punch line was supposed to be? Even if all of it was made up for the show, it was just weird and boring.

Maybe not for everyone
3 April 2023
Based on some of the other reviews I've read, I think that perhaps this special isnt for everyone, and thats okay. Personally, I laughed a ton throughout, *like* to the point of having coughing fits because im still recovering from a cold.

I found it to be intellectually stimulating while providing good laughs. Mae Martin is incredibly introspective, perhaps to their detriment sometimes. It creates the stage for unique jokes, which landed for me, though I could understand if others don't appreciate it. If you're looking for cheap, hacky laughs or those based on vulgarity, you will not find it here. If you enjoy thought-provoking comedy and enjoyed Feel Good, you may just find this to be as brilliantly written as I did.

brilliant and i'll never watch it again
19 March 2023
I think this film is brilliant...yet I knew immediately that I would never want to watch it again. I can also completely understand why so many viewers hated it and have rated it poorly.

I think this movie's largest problem is in its marketing and description. I would not call this a horror. I would not even necessarily call it a comedy (though some may find it hilarious in an absurdist kind of way). I think this film can best be described as a cinematic experience offering social commentary.

Fairly early on, both myself and my partner were confused. Everyone talking over each other and the seemingly random disjointed events/dialogue made us feel on edge, but all of that seems to be the point.

There's a scene where something major is happening, its potentially very dangerous, yet some of the characters were just yammering away about unrelated, trivial matters. The one person who cared about what was happening notes this absurd behavior. It seems to be a metaphor for how we live life.

The whole film is overwhelming. It made us feel weird yet we were quick to be distracted from the catastrophes that were occurring...such is life. We are constantly being bombarded by news, both good and bad but mostly bad, from around the world. We hear of a horrible tragedy somewhere and go on to watch our shows, gossip about the neighbor, whatever thing ppl use to distract themselves with. And why not? What can we do about it anyways? So long as our supermarker remains up and running, we have to keep going about our lives....right?

laugh after laugh
27 February 2023
My spouse and I laughed the whole time. I laughed until tears were literally spilling down my face. I love myself some dark and raunchy comedy but this special was refreshing in a way. I think it takes a unique talent to be this funny without being crass or dissecting a current or hot button social issue. I love his delivery, too.

Idk what more I can say about it but apparently i have to in order to be able to submit a review. I do not get how this man is not more famous. I am definitely anticipating future work from him. He is really good at telling a story, descriptive without bogging it down and his timing is impeccable.

Laughed the whole way through
8 November 2022
Fortune's always funny, but this was particularly fantastic! My spouse and I were laughing almost the entire time. Though she touched on the pandemic, she didn't rely on it heavily, so it didn't come across as repetitive. The pacing was great. The call-backs were well-timed and hilarious. Fortune has this awesome ability to talk about real life problems, yet she doesn't drag her audience down. She ended things on a high note and we felt good afterwards. It's definitely a mood booster and I find her to be a positive person (though not in a fake, toxic positivity kind of way!). I've really liked her since I first saw her material and she's now landed among my top 5 fave comedians with this special.

engaging without being sensational
13 June 2022
I've seen A LOT of serial killer pieces and this is probably the best so far. It was informative and captivating without sensationalizing the criminal or his crimes. It wasnt filled with racy editing or over-the-top dramatic music which so many seem to do. It was just the facts and various ppl's POV's which are engaging enough on their own. It felt respectful and there was particular focus on the victim's and how their families were impacted, which is truly whats important here imo.

Horrendously Bad
23 May 2022
My husband and I consider ourselves big Tom and Christina fans and we could not get through it. It was so cringey and played out. It was like hearing your senior citizen aunt get drunk on too much wine and go on a tirade about how she's a part of the best generation and kids these days, amiright? Yikes. Idk what happened to her but this was awful.

Lacks Depth
5 January 2022
Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this half as much as I expected. I love British crime shows. However, this one missed the mark. There's no depth to the characters. There's extremely little meaningful interaction among the recurring characters so there's a lack of connection or reason to get invested. With the criminals, you learn a lot about their crime and little about their personhood so there's no connection there either. I enjoyed it for a few episodes and then became extremely bored, especially bc its very formulaic.

Fizzled out for me
14 November 2021
This show had a good start, even if it is just a remake of Hart of Dixie, but I was over it midway through season 3. Though I did push through cliche after trope after unlikely "dramatic" event meant to spice things up, I wont be returning for season 4. Jack and Mel's relationship became predictable and a little toxic. We're led to believe Jack is this amazing boyfriend, however, he consistently fails to respect Mel's boundaries and she blindly just sees it as him "caring so much". Thats one trope we should leave in the past.

More like comedy
14 November 2021
The CGI was so poor at times and overdone in others that it became laughable. Instead of being scared, I was distracted wondering why certain "scares" were chosen bc they were so bizarre. The ending was convenient and didnt make sense. Both my spouse and I regretted the time it took to watch this. The acting was good however and Bill Hader is always a gem.

Missing Something
13 November 2021
I love period pieces. I love slow-burns. I love dramas and character stories. I thought I'd love this movie but something was missing. I couldnt understand the character's motivations at times. It seemed like critical aspects were lost in the book-to-film translation (I haven't read the novel btw). I forced myself to watch the last 30 or so minutes. It was overall disappointing as it could have been something great. The cast is more than capable and the cinematography was beautiful but there's only so much that can be done with poor writing.

13 July 2021
The last season, particularly the ending, really tanked this show. I was really enjoying it but they wrote it into the ground. I finished it bc I'm stubborn and not really picky. The ending really ruined it though and I regret the time invested in it.

17 February 2021
This was great fun to watch and im not even a dolly fan. Ofc i know a few of her songs, this was the first time learning so much about her. I've always respected her humanitarian work but wow, her rags to riches story is awesome especially since she's stayed so humble and kind. Did some digging afterwards and i couldnt find a bad story about her. Thats not to say she's perfect, though i think it speaks volumes when she is always so patient and kind to the ppl she interacts with when ppl with half of her success have been known to let the money turn them into jerks.

Rushed yet somehow boring
5 February 2021
Being a huge fan of fantasy including Arthurian legends, I was really excited for this show. I loved some of the twists, such as the inclusion of the Fey race, but was largely disappointed. Major plot points are rushed leading to a lack of connection with the characters so much so that I kept forgetting the lead's name until the last couple episodes. It didn't help that she lacked a fully fleshed personality, as did many of the characters. It was like they expected us to care just bc we're supposed to rather than actually taking the time to develop characters and the storyline in a way that would make us care. I found myself enjoying a few secondary, even tertiary characters, more than the leads. If they had slowed things down and committed more to being a serious fantasy, perhaps leading up to Nimue (yup, had to think about it for a second) gaining the sword (or somewhere around there), I think this show could have been a lot more enjoyable. They did a decent job with Merlin, though maybe thats only bc Ik Arthurian lore already. They certainly should have spent more time on Nimue and Arthur, individually and together bc their storyline was hardly believable and quite boring. I would also have liked to learn more about the Weeping Monk, his backstory as well as changing allegiances. It was a fine way to pass the time but my spouse and I were glad when it was over and will not be watching the next season (assuming it doesnt get cancelled).

3rd Season Ruined it
16 October 2020
The first two seasons were great. Sure, you need to be willing to suspend belief about some things but overall very fun, very engaging so long as you didnt try to pick it apart (which really isnt something I tend to do; i watch shows to be entertained). Then came season 3, which just got over the top ridiculous to the point i could ignore it. My spouse and I were actually happy when we finished watching it. It felt like they had fired all their writers and hired transformers' loving 13 yr old kids to write instead. Basic physics, biology, tech dynamics, etc all completely thrown out the window. Not to mention all the logistical plot holes. So sad bc we really loved it before then. The actors did great with such a garbage fire btw, looking forward to seeing them in other works.

Falls Flat
15 March 2020
As a person who enjoys atypical indie flicks, slow burn thrillers, and character-driven dramas, I found this an unfortunately boring movie (read: I dont need action-packed, fast-paced, in your face entertainment films). The pacing was poor. The "big" reveal seemed anticlimatic by the time we got there and I just didn't care anymore. The plot, the characters, everything felt disconnected and flat.
