Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
Terminator's best! Years ahead of it's time!
There are very few films that come along every decade or so. This is one of them.
James Cameron, the versatile director we all know after Titanic and Avatar, basically launched his career with the first Terminator, a low budget Sci-Fi. He then directed and wrote Aliens and The Abyss. Both films are quite incredible for their time as well. After his great success, he was given a $100 million budget to make a sequel to Terminator. What it could of turned into none of us knew... but what it became is nothing short of the true talents James Cameron had as a director (and still has).
Terminator 2: Judgement day is possibly the most successful, infamous Sci-Fi & Action film ever made, with tons of great human elements adding a lot of drama and emotion as well. But I can't think of a single thing they did incorrect in this film. The casting is amazing from Arnold to getting the right kid to be John Connor (amazing job) and bringing back the Psychologist from the first film adds to it all. The film is shot so beautifully, with cinematography worthy of an Oscar, with chase scenes done flawlessly, to the slick editing and amazing musical score on top of everything. Watching this on Blu-Ray it looks like it could of been released a couple years ago... very few films age like this.
Sarah Connor is in a Psych Jail, following the events of the first film and nobody believing what she says she saw. Her son, cast so perfectly as a 12 year old John Connor (Ed Furlong), truly is what makes this film not just a Sci-Fi and action film, but a great drama and character study type of film as well.
Arnold is sent back again this time, same type of model but upgraded a bit, but now is back to help save John Connor and protect the future of humanity. Cybernet also sends a Terminator from the future, a T-1000 model (Robert Patrick) that is liquid metal and can transform into other objects, people, and is a more complex model. He's sent to destroy John Connor and whoever else is in his way, including Arnold. The plot doesn't sound like it would be such an amazing film, but it's one of the best films ever made, and will be in my heart forever.
This film has it all. Take the opening scene of Arnold coming down to Earth, walking into a bar butt naked, messing some people up to get the right clothes, throughout all this is fun humor, action, plot developing, and a great soundtrack and score. The moment he grabs the guys glasses before leaving (as the guy is aiming a shotgun at him) and then grabs the shotgun, you know this film is unique.
Throughout the 2+ hour film it's never slow, if anything I wish it were longer it's that amazing. The fact that John Connor has no real dad, has bad foster parents, and his mom is in jail/psych brings another huge element to the film, especially because Arnold's a terminator that can now actually learn new things, and a father and son type of bond (or a great friendship) develops between the young future savior John and the good terminator.
Without trying to spoil the film for those who have never seen this... which I fathom hard to meet or find anyone who hasn't, please do. Even if you saw the first Terminator and didn't like it, or have seen Terminator Salvation (with Bale) directed by awful MCG, and whatever the 3rd terminator was called, they are NOTHING in comparison to this film.
Terminator 2: Judgment Day is by far the best action-SciFi w/drama and comedy, that I've ever seen, and probably will be that way till I die. Sure I'm nostalgic, but the people I've gotten to watch this film who never had were simply amazed too. Epic directing by James Cameron is a huge part of this, and remember the first Terminator was a low budget film that made Cameron famous. Terminator 2 was a 100 million dollar big budget summer blockbuster that made over half a billion dollars in theaters across the world (in 1992 when tickets cost 4-5 bucks).
I also consider it Arnold's best performance, as he is a perfect fit to play a terminator / robot with his mannerisms and accent. He does a superb job, and when it's all set and done this is easily one of the top 100 films ever made. I honestly think it should of been nominated or won some Oscars (including best film), but Science Fiction and Action just don't get credit by the Oscar's (especially then).
The special effects are so ahead of their time, watch any other 1992 action film and it makes T2 feel like it was made post 2000 (as the Titanic feels, as True Lies feels). I won't spoil the Cybernet sub-plot and everything, but you all probably know it all like me or are asking "what is Cybernet". If you are asking what is Cybernet, then I recommend you watch this movie ASAP! I've owned it on every medium nearly, from VHS to DVD to now a great Blu-Ray copy I got at Target for $5.
An epic, unique, breakthrough film that will never be emulated the right way. Film is a certain type of medium where now everything has been made almost, and these days nothing is new. In 1992, Terminator 2 was groundbreaking across the WORLD, not just the US.
A MUST SEE! 10/10
