Saboteur (1942)
A good movie ruined by overbearing patriotism
About halfway through the movie, a person working at a circus sideshow gives a speech that is so patriotic it nearly hurts. This is one of many examples seen throughout the movie of patriotism taking over in long, rambling speeches.
The patriotism is one problem out of two problems with this movie. The other major problem is the end, where the villain (Fry) is hanging on the Statue of Liberty. Kane, Robert Cummings's character, is holding Fry up by his sleeve. The sleeve rips, and Fry falls to his death.
This ending is abrupt, and seems like the writers were just looking for a way to finish the plot off and just decided to kill Fry.
Otherwise, besides those two problems, Saboteur is a good suspense movie. Good scenes include the bridge, and the scene at the ranch. Also, when Kane is riding with the trucker and the police pull up. Saboteur is not one of Hitchcock's best movies. Still, it is a good film if you disregard those two problems.
