3 Stars- Keanu Reeves.
"That's pain. Get used to it."
2 Stars- Shia LeBouf.
"*mumbling weird prayer that did something cool*
literally everything else.
Why 0 stars, you ask.
What great special effects, you say.
Here's the deal. Clumsy editing, plot made zero sense, terrible acting, horrible screenplay. They explained just enough things so you could feel like you knew what was going on, but failed to build or expand those feelings into what the English language calls "coherence." Really just enjoy watching Keanu Reeves be a bad actor in everything he does. Literally lifts junk like this into something I enjoy.
A Nolan Film of Epic Proportions
I just got back from the theater and my head is still reeling.
This review is more to help me process the film than critically examine the movie.
Any fan of Nolan should see the movie, at the very least to satisfy your curiosity. It's my recommendation that this is a 'can't miss' film.
It should be noted that I am not a visual effects expert nor a scientist, so my appreciation of the film comes from my love for movies, plain and simple.
This movie was incredible. To try and capture not only the complex ideas of space travel, but of relativity and quantum physics, is ambitious to say the least. Calling this movie ambitious is the largest understatement I can make.
That being said, it far from a perfect movie. The plot can be hard to follow, some of the emotional scenes fall flat, and you leave the movie feeling overwhelmed visually, but far from being moved.
So why the perfect rating?
This movie made me think. It challenged me visually, intellectually and emotionally. The movie's ideas of love, family and human will are ones anyone can relate to, and while the characters aren't as memorable or as touching as other more moving dramas, they represent humanity at its finest.
As with any movie about space, the visual experience of being in space is crucial, and from what I've read about Nolan's technical team's process, this is the best that you could hope for.
The biggest reason I enjoyed this so much, is this is truly a unique film. It demands a lot from its audience. For those who love originality, love ambitious filmmaking and love having a film you want to talk about, Interstellar meets and exceeds all expectations.
It has something for everyone, and I'm sure it has something people will not like. It is a challenge of a movie. But for those willing, it's worth the trip.
