The Phantom of the Opera (2004)
What was I thinking?
I cannot believe that I almost didn't watch this. I had no idea what a beautiful, emotional story this is. I am normally uninterested in Broadway shows so I almost missed out on this gem, but I enjoyed "Chicago" so I figured, what the hey, I have nothing to do today. Now I am haunted by the Phantom.
The music and singing are a treat. Gerard Butler is (of course) perfect as the Phantom. He can really sing! Emmy Rossum is beautiful and has the voice of an angel. (I would have loved to be her during filming.)I became emotionally involved with these characters and for me that makes a great movie.
Do yourself a favour and take some time to watch this, in the dark, uninterrupted.
A lonely road ...(spoilers)
Of course I knew what the outcome would be...we all did. But for years I have asked myself "Why?". Why turn to the dark side? Why spend your life controlling everyone else's? Why do you do the things you do? Why are you a cold-hearted killer? In short, why so angry Anakin? Now I know. The path to the Dark Side is paved with good intentions.
Anakin was a still a scared little boy under all that Jedi power. He was afraid to lose the people he loved. He only wanted the power to save them. Imagine, then, spending the rest of your days knowing that you not only failed to save them, but that you killed them. (Let's not nit-pic...he was told he killed them, damn that Sidious, he's a master with words and promises) I'd be angry. I'd feel like a failure. I'd feel alone. I'd feel like I had nothing left to lose.
I now have sympathy for Darth Vader. I know he did terrible things. I also know everything I need to know. I feel fulfilled. Now it's time to relive the rest of the story so I can experience a prophecy being fulfilled as well.
One last thing...the light saber action was extraordinary!
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000)
I'm new to anime, but very impressed with this emotional story.
Well, I came across this film accidentally and I am glad I did. I was captivated from the beginning. It is incredible to see a "cartoon" that is mature and meaningful. I am no expert movie reviewer, I simply know what I like. I'm not going to give a summary of the story, suffice it to say that if you like/love vampires and feel that maybe sometimes they are misunderstood then you need to see this. It may be difficult for some people to "get into" an animated film but this is not kid's stuff. These characters have real emotions, real reactions. Let yourself believe for a while. My first taste of anime has only whetted my appetite for more, especially if there are vampires involved.
