Sorry, couldn't care less.
I have no idea why there's so much hype around this movie?
Like others have said, it's about a washed up Hollywood actor (so far so cliché) trying to have a comeback of sorts on Broadway.
Crazy daughter? Check. Ex-wife? Check. Worried he's become passé? Check. Crazy supporting characters (with actors doing a great job, obviously having a great time)? Check. Surreal moments that don't gel with the rest of the movie? Check, check, check. Unusual cinematography? Check, if you count various close-ups and time-lapse from day to night...but really, I could probably do those with my iPhone.
Sure, it's a great character study, there are a handful of funny and very funny moments and without doubt, all of the actors are on top form. But, it fails hugely because at no stage did I care what happened to any of them!
Hoje Eu Quero Voltar Sozinho (2014)
If you liked Beautiful Thing....
I confess, I've seen this movie at the local movie theater 3 times. As other reviewers have said, it's a subtle, charming, warm movie that gets into you heart and your head. For a small budget production it does a great job of feeling very complete with good cinematography, music and generally high production values. Our protagonists take you on a journey through the trials and tribulations of first and unrequited love, fighting for more independence from your parents, dealing with the school bullies, loneliness and jealousy. Whilst some (even big budget) movies tackle these topics and subtle emotions in a clunky, heavy handed, formulaic fashion but with The Way He Looks we find ourselves rooting for everyone, appreciating the fluster of teenage emotions and (as the core theme) remembering how breathless we felt when the first intoxicating buds of love sprung forth. If you liked the premise of Beautiful Thing, you'll love The Way He Looks. I think I'm going to see if for the 4th time tomorrow....
