A Cure for Wellness (2016)
How many times?
How many times can we see Lockhart learning a slightly revised, truer still version of the story of the baron & his sister? How many times can we see him walk into a forbidden area of the asylum and witness increasingly alarming arcane biomedical practices? How many times can we see Lockhart ever-more desperately attempt to escape only to be brought back? How many times can we see Volmer gaslight Lockhart and then subject him to a new, even creepier treatment? How many times can we see Lockhart see something eerie concerning eels only to not be sure that he really saw it? How many times can we see signs of Hannah's overdue awakening womanhood after her prolonged childhood?
About 1.5 too many times. This movie is 1.5 times longer than it needs to be. The story is slight enough that it could be an hour and 40 minutes; instead it's 2.5 tedious hours. The revelations are not that interesting nor original. The movie is yet another entry in the 'biomedical vampire' genre: a person using strange science involving killing or draining the life essence of others to sustain the life, youth, or beauty of themselves or a loved one: I Vampiri, Eyes Without A Face, Autopsy, The Man Who Could Cheat Death, The Leech woman and many many others. It has great, eerie sets, cinematography, mood and could have been reedited into something much more potent. It just can't sustain interest for its whole stretched out, repetitive running time.
The second best Twilight, and one of the best vampire movies
The first Twilight film redefined the paranormal romance genre, establishing a new template that others have followed. Breaking Dawn Part 2, the final Twilight, sets a new standard for vampire-werewolf action.
Following the earlier films' theme of life passages (first love, heartbreak, marriage, parenthood) through a fantastical lens, BD2 is about becoming part of a larger community. This is the satisfying conclusion of the series that fans have been waiting for and that is sure to create new fans of the franchise. With Breaking Dawn Part 2 the entire Twilight Saga can be viewed as a complete 10 hour work.
