A Disturbing and Beautiful Masterpiece
What a film.
This is one of those times where the public opinion is completely wrong. A film with this much depth and sophistication should definitely have a higher rating. I guess I'll just have to deal with that 6.1 for now.
To start off, this film is beautiful. The cinematography is absolutely stunning. It captures L.A. at night in such a gorgeous way, creating a sense of beauty, even if the imagery is harsh. The camera is usually behind Frank (a few scenes are third person) giving one of the best perspectives on a horror film I have seen. It doesn't feel like found footage, it feels cinematic.
The performances also make this film great. Elijah Wood gives his all in this film. We don't see much of him, but you can totally get a pure sense of mania from him, just from the voice. He was the perfect choice for this role, because you would never expect someone like Elijah Wood to be a killer, and that's what's so effective. Nora Arnezeder is also great as Anna. You totally buy the friendship and romance that she has with Frank. She gives a really believable performance and isn't like other female slasher characters. She isn't stupid and annoying, she's smart and likable.
The gore in the film actually shocked me at times, and I'm a huge slasher fan. I haven't seen the most extreme torture porn films, but in terms of slashers, this is probably the most disturbing one that I have seen in terms of gore. It was most of the time the sudden attacks that were the nastiest. For example, the ankle cut was really well done and extremely unpleasant. The one that made me flinch the most was the death of Rita. Oh my lord. When Frank pulls the scalp off and she screams, I actually turned away. Those 2 scenes beat even the most alarming scenes in the original Maniac film.
Now the thing that makes the movie completely, is the psychology of the whole piece. This film made me feel like I was the killer. Whenever Frank was hiding in a closet, or silently stalking a victim, I felt scared that I (he) was going to be seen. I was sucked into the movie for the whole duration because of this. No other film that I have ever watched has given me a feeling like that. If you really want to get wrapped up in a film, this is a great one to watch.
So yes, this film is an absolute masterpiece. It is in my top 10 films of all time (yes, that's how much I love it) and for a good reason. The things that I stated are all things that make this film so great. I obviously can't cover everything that I love about this film in an IMDb review, but hopefully you understand my love through this review.
This is an easy 10/10
Payday 2 (2013)
A Fun & Intense Video Game
Payday 2 is a game about four robbers who take jobs from certain crime bosses. This includes robbing banks, jewellery stores, and art galleries, destroying mall property, transporting cocaine, and even breaking a fellow robber out of prison.
I'm already sold.
For those who don't know, I am a huge fan of bank robbery movies and really just anything having to do with bank robbery in general. So when I heard about this game, I got extremely excited. Then one day I decided to purchase the game on steam. I immediately fell in love with it.
Now to talk about actual gameplay (and things relating to it. Please also remember that I am reviewing the PC version). The game doesn't really follow a linear story. It instead it includes a map where you choose the job you want to do from different employers. From there you plan everything out with your crew, and go into the game to earn money and XP. The missions have certain requirements (such as collect 8 bags of money) that you need to complete in order to finish the job. While doing all of this money grabbing, you are battling a barrage of police who want you dead. Also all the characters are memorable and fun to play as.
The controls are smooth and easy to use. Even though there are multiple controls that you need to use, all of them are easy to remember. Even if you are just staring at the screen, you will be able to know where to hit on the keyboard.
The only real negative thing I can talk about is single player mode. The AI are so useless, they can't carry bags and are awful at shooting most of the time. It is virtually unplayable unless it's at a very low difficulty. So all I can say is, play multiplayer, please.
In the end, the game is basically a masterpiece, I have virtually no problems except single player, which I don't play so I don't really care about that. Grab some friends online and play the game together and have a good time. Give each other roles and work as a team, it leads to a highly enjoyable game.
