The Path (2016)
I've given up half way through season 2, very lazy writing.
Season 1 was OK with some brilliant moments in between. Until the end of season when there were some illogical behaviours (aka assigning an event to a character not bothering to make it believable)... But all in all it was OK.
Season 2 went downhill very very fast. It's become obvious that they have no idea what they are doing and how to develop characters. They are just throwing stuff at us that make no sense half the time. This in turn undoes the characters believability. The series are supposed to be a drama and all about why people does this and that... But what I see is people just doing random stuff... It's very lazy script writing and not even the actors can help it any more. They gave it a good try but there is just so much they can do with what they are given.
Where I left it was also very obvious they want to keep things mysterious and undefined in order to make the show last longer. It's also obvious that when they have no plot they just create some situation/conflict without giving it much thought to (try) distract and entertain (poorly) the viewer.
I fear they will drag on until canceled and everyone who stuck with it in hopes to reach a conclusion will be disappointed. And that's why I just gave up. I have no wish to see the characters devolve more and more into the ridiculous, knowing I'll probably never get any satisfying ending. IF this ends not being canceled and feedback about its ending is positive I MIGHT come back to it. But I think it won't happen and only positive reviews will be motivated more by people being a fan of one of the 3 leads than because the story itself was worth anything.
2/3 awful and 1/3 OK, not worth it.
So... I finally watched it, and for the 1st 2h I did not understand how anyone could say this was worth a 6 or a 7... I did saw about the fake reviews. But it still didn't explain why it was still at a 6.9 after so many months... Then the last hour of the movie started and it made sense.
So... First two thirds, it's a mess. They got 500 ideas, bits and pieces and decided that rather than being selective or work hard to make it coherent... They would simply throw the whole mess in our face without any order or sense. Then once that's done you get the last 3rd of the movie, which is your more standard and linear plot. They fight, they make peace, they realize who's really the bad guy and fight against him/it. Enjoyable in a non-descript way. Still not a great plot and with the intelligence and psychology of a rock... But... it's an action movie and this last part delivers action, battle and other popcorn pass-time, which is what I wanted.
So it ends on a good (better?) note and it's easy to forget/pardon how truly bad the first 2/3 were... And that's probably why it still is at a decent average. BUT considering how many action movies there are out there... I would NOT recommend anyone to bother with it. Go watch something else, this one IMHO is not worth it.
what a trainwreck
There is nothing I can say in it's favour... It's not badly made, it's not cheap... it's not bad at all... And yet it is. It looks and feels like a family movie for most of it, except that it makes you feel awful all the time because everything is going wrong. At least give me half a movie of happy times so I feel good for a while before you crush my heart or something. And then suddenly violence explodes across the screen... So I guess it's not a family movie? Which means it's even worse than I thought because if it's not that then what was it trying to be? Not enough Sci-fy or action or violence or feel-good to be anything... And simply not good enough to simply "be". Haven been so puzzled about a movie in a long time. I can't say in all fairness that it's bad... but at the same time I think it's a mess.
