Prom Night (2008)
This made me long for House of Wax
I had high hopes for this movie... well I had mediocre hopes for it. I thought okay another slasher film with people getting murdered but hey that can be kind of fun. This was not. It starts out really slowly and the atmosphere isn't even all good that then turns to bad it begins in a kind of half-good/ half-bad kind of limbo where you're not really sure if you should feel on edge or relaxed.... anyway the back story is skimmed over and I'm pretty sure they mention how the killer escaped once- briefly... it didn't make much sense to me- you'd think they'd build maximum security asylums to keep people in and that when someone escaped it wouldn't be such a ho-hum affair as these people lead you to believe it is. I'd certainly be worried if in real life it was treated so casually.
Anyway they get to the prom and the horror begins. Death after meaningless death ensues and each one again is taken very causally by the film and suspense isn't really built unless there's some action surrounding Brittany Snow. My main problem with this film is that the killer goes for those separated from the others but it's all too easy. Some of them leave each other when in all honesty they wouldn't if it were real life. Oh and no one thinks to grab a weapon. I'm sorry but if I had a stalker- let alone one that tried to kill me before I'd be sleeping with some form of weapon, even a taser or machete or gun... ANYTHING... and yet no one the entire movie- bar the police have weapons of any description... there's an entire scene set in a construction site... COMMON! *ahem* anyway the film ends abruptly like most of the deaths/ character development.... and it makes me miss House of Wax... at least in that I had Chad Michael Murray to look at...
The Covenant (2006)
Exactly what it promises to be
I wanted to see this movie at the cinema because I had seen the poster for it and was pretty much like "Oooh hot guys, I'm there". But having finally seen it on DVD I think that there is more to the movie then that. First up lets get things straight, if you want to be challenged intellectually or see a movie that is likely to get an Oscar you are going to hate this. However this movie has a somewhat reasonably plausible plot and the acting is decent. A lot of these guys are first timers- and lets face it, the first thing you do isn't going to be mind blowing since you don't have the options.
The Covenant is a film about warlocks and a group of them that have remained together (The bloodline, not literally them) since the Salem witch trials in the 1700's. And it's exactly that. There was a few times where I thought I could see the plot coming- and although the ending is quite clichéd- what came before wasn't. The guys are all hot (Although I do feel sorry for the character of Tyler as he seems to be 'The Fourth Guy' and probably had the same amount of lines in the movie as fingers on my hand) and the fact they take their shirts off adds to the movie.
Personally I liked this. It wasn't as predictable as I had first imagined, and it's meant to be a teen horror, and for the genre, it's a good one!
