The Color Purple (1985)
Good despite directorial flaws *SPOILERS*
This movie would have been better served by another director. In the hands of an immature Steven Spielberg (he's better now), this film took on an uneven and heavy-handed feel. The moments of levity were over-the-top and many of the emotional moments went straight for the throat.
Also, I felt it should have ended when she left him. It would have felt more natural. A second film showing her struggle and triumphant return would have been more appropriate than the rushed ending. I want to see what happened to Celie to turn her into the confident returning heroine.
Despite these flaws, the movie triumphs due to the great characters and fine acting.
