Training Day (2001)
Excellent acting, but poorly direction
Training Day is probably not a masterpiece. But it's obvious that the acting of Denzel Washington in it, may be among the best of all time.
First, let's start with the main problem; the poorly performance of almost every supporting character (except Ethan Hawk of course). This lead to some forgettable moments, like every time we Eva Mendes on the screen.
Then we have a plot that spans only in a day, which could be interesting, but takes too long to be enjoyable. Anyway, the themes treated in the movie aren't original at all, but somehow, it's what we expect to see in the genre; corruption, violence, ethic, etc.
But, in another hand, during the movie, the conversion from the Det. Alonzo, that goes from the respectful detective to a corrupt cop who's trying to get out of a mess he got himself into is so impressive, that it's hardly to not enjoy it, even though the formula was seen over and over by the years.
And let's not forget of course, the performance of Hawk (who was also an academy award nominated) which may be the greatest of his career.
So if we resume, we have here some poorly scenes, that could have been erased in the final cut; in a not very original plot, but good enough to keep the attention; a bad choice of actors (Dr. Dre?!?!); but two terrific performances from two terrific actors, that make this movie one of the best of his decade.
