Ella Enchanted (2004)
Utterly loathed every second of it.
Over the weekend, (just yesterday, really) I was taken against my will to the 7:20 showing of Ella Enchanted. The film, designed to add a modern kick to the fairy tale by introducing contemporary references and attitudes along with golden-oldie rock songs, never fully achieves the lighthearted tone it so desperately seeks. In short, the attempt to "shrek it up" failed miserably, and with the audience limited to adolescents and younger children, and mostly girls at that, box office potential here is equally as limited.
Of course, as terrible as the movie was, and despite the fact that I utterly loathed every second of it, I was quite surprised and perhaps even impressed when Ella (Anne Hathaway) belched out the first few notes of yet another golden-oldie rock song. However, the singing, dancing, bad jokes, and bad acting got old after the first few minutes.
The majority of the jokes in the movie fell flat and the constant attempts to be cute got quite irritating. This movie was the worst thing one could ever have the misfortune to see in a theatre, but I imagine it would have done better if the dimwit who wrote the screenplay hadn't manipulated things in the book/added things that never happened/taken things out. I give Ella Enchanted 0.5 stars out of 5.
