I've included the basic Ocarina of Time selections, but I've also included possibilities for Majora's Mask, Skyward Sword, Twilight Princess, A Link to the Past, and a big-screen remake of Sage of Darkness.
Nothing is super final, I'm open to suggestions.
Comment and tell me what you think. I hope you enjoy it.
The Wizard of Stone Mountain (2011)
He-Man! ......or so I thought
NOTE: I make several comparisons to the Legend of Zelda fan film Hero of Time.
I'm not a huge Masters of the Universe fan, but I like it well enough. I heard about this movie and thought, "Ah, what the heck. I'll give it a try." The result was not one to my liking. But first lets go on with the summary.
Malik is the Wizard of Stone Mountain. He is steward of a small village that has been seized with a terrible plague. He goes to King Randor in the castle of Eternos for help. Little do they know that this plague is all part of an evil plan by a demon named Locus, who is in fact working for Skeletor and "Evil Itself." Malik is in search of a cure, and eventually has to turn to the Spirit of Darkness (Locus) for help.
I think this was based off of an episode of the show, but just the one. Honestly it's cool that they tried to do an original story, but it really didn't work out. It's kind of slow, but it's biggest problem is that it doesn't feel very He-Man/Masters of the Universe-like.
THE GOOD -The costumes look very good. They looked better than the costumes in Hero of Time. -They tried to create an original story. Props! -Makeup looked great too, especially the blisters/sores on the plagued people. -They have an original soundtrack! -Their Skeletor is freaking awesome! He looked great. -Some good acting from Randor, Skeletor, Evil-Lyn, and Prince Adam. -They made a live-action, feature length, He-Man movie!
THE BAD -They try to speak with an old-timey motif, but it sometimes comes off as cheesy. -Some not so great acting (but that's to be expected in a fan film). -When Locus is meeting with Malik, sometimes he talks extremely quiet and was hard to hear. -The soundtrack (though original) is just okay. Not bad, just meh. Not nearly as good as the original soundtrack from Hero of Time. -All your favorite characters from the show are completely undermined and screwed over on screen time. Evil-Lyn and the rest of Skeletor's minions are in there for two scenes. Skeletor gets ONE FREAKING SCENE AT THE END OF THE MOVIE! Man-At-Arms and Meckaneck are only mentioned. But worst of all, Prince Adam is in there for I think five scenes, AND HE-MAN ISN'T IN THERE AT ALL! -He-Man is a sci-fi/fantasy crossover. This movie, however, is not. The only science fiction in here are the three shots of multiple planets in a skyline and a dude wearing sunglasses.
Sorry, I've been a little cruel. Getting a bunch of people together to make a movie (with no money) is extremely difficult, and I commend them for making a feature length He-Man movie. This is the ultimate show of fandom and patronage to something you love.
I guess my problem was I was expecting a movie more closely associated to He-Man, Skeletor, etc. If you're willing to see a movie less associated with the main He-Man characters, then by all means see it.
It's pretty okay. I lower my expectations and go open-minded into all independent/fan-films, and as such the rating is more lenient as well. On a fan film scale, I give it a 5/10. It's alright, give it a try if you are He-Man fan and you REALLY want to see a live action movie.
P.S. - The sequel, Masters of the Universe: The Fountain of Life, will actually have He-Man in it, so I'll be sure to see that one too.
The Hero of Time (2009)
My childhood dream, finally come true!
I love original The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time video game and beat it when I was six years old. When I was that age, I wanted an LoZ movie so bad. I had dreams about it and everything!
I waited for this movie for 4-6 years, following it almost every step of the way, and it finally paid off. I saw this, and it was one of the happiest moments of my life!
And when Nintendo shut it down, I was ruined. That was a dark day :(
But, not to fear: it's back on YouTube, you can download it in all kinds of places, I have it on my MP3, everyone's happy.
I don't get why some people hated this movie. It's better than any crap by Uwe "Toilet" Boll! This is the best video game adapted movie of all time.
Now, you do have to approach this movie with an open mind: it's an independent movie. But think about it, the fact that a bunch of college kids in Atlanta, Georgia (with no money) got together, got all their buddies to be in it (with no money) and managed to make this awesome movie that's better than any video game movie out there (with no money), is pretty freaking cool. Yes, there are some pretty fake looking things (The Wig of Time) but if you use a little imagination, you too will realize the awesomeness.
Here's the summary (basically the same as Ocarina of Time, but with a few changes) - Link is a young boy being raised by the Kokiri. The Deku Tree's final dying message to Link is that he must fulfill his destiny: leave the Kokiri Forest, meet the Princess of Destiny (Zelda), defeat the Gerudo sorcerer Ganondorf, the Prince of Darkness, and save all of Hyrule. That's the most basic, Reader's Digest version of it.
So in conclusion, if you are a Legend of Zelda fan, and won't whine about every little detail from the game not being in the movie (non-pointy ears, a dress being a different color, etc.), and keep an open mind, The Hero of Time will fulfill every childhood fantasy and joy you had when you first played Ocarina of Time on the Nintendo 64 (gold cartridge for the win!!).
