Star Trek Continues (2013)
The very definition of a second-rate cast!
Yes, I know, I know, everyone's gushing about it. Now, don't get me wrong: the cinematography, the set decoration, the costumes etc., these should all get Oscars. Or Emmy's, what ever. But with a show that has the level of well-knownness as Star Trek, that is so beloved as Star Trek, when it's re-imagined, rather than sequelled or pre-quelled, the comparison with the original is inevitable and harsh. And constant.
Now, that the actors were different, that could be forgiven, but that they looked so ... off, so weird, to be blunt: so old and so .... ugly, that can't. The viewer compares what he or she sees constantly to the original. And when not just one actor, but 5 actors all come up short, it's too much. They weren't bad actors, they were pretty good. But Spock looked weird, had a high pitched voice, lacked gravitas and Vulcan-charisma. I didn't believe him for one second. Uhura had wrinkles. Sulu is not supposed to have eye sacks, he looked awful. Bones is too fat and chunky looking. And about the ersatz Kirk, while he was the most likable looking of the bunch, my gaydar went off big time, and I'm not even gay. Good gay actors should be able to play butch. Hollywood is filled with them. You should be able to get those gay idiosyncratic tics, walk and moves out of your system! Kirk wasn't gay, and Shattner never played him that way.
Like it or not, Hollywood, and the rest of society have become a youth worshipping culture. Hollywoods dirty little secret is that they cover up bad acting with prettyness. Same goes for when you try to re imagine something like this: the actors being pretty or young would have gone a long way.
Fruitvale Station (2013)
A sober telling of a gripping story
I really like this film, and it's a story that can't be told enough in the America of 2014
I really liked the way they told it, they showed ALL sides of this guy, Oscar Grant, the good as well as the bad. I remember seeing that youtube vids and I thought, well, that's just how it is in America. And given the Trayvon Martin case, I was sadly correct.
The film shows the last day of Oscar Grant, and it's really sparsely told, you see the exact things which lead to his death, and some scenes to make you aware of his humanity. He was just a man, flawed like all of us, he lost his job, didn't tell his girlfriend about it, he did some time, didn't wanna go back so bad he threw out a whole bag of weed, he cared for a stray dog, he fought with his mother, he had a bad temper in prison. One of the tragedies is that probably a lot people are gonna feel guilt: the customer for calling out his name, and alerting his enemy to him. His girlfriend for forcing him to go out while he didn't want to. Above all his mom, for making him take the train. Perhaps his daughter will some anger, and think that if only he listened to her, he'd still be alive. All these emotions are understandable but they shouldn't feel guilt about it. The real guilty party was the cop and he got punished. Too light, if you ask me, but at least something was done. It's good that their bossed quit after firing the cops. The real culprit is this trigger happy culture that is now prevalent in Europe too. Cops just shoot, they get so scared and shoot for no good reason.
It's really a hard film to watch, I did something I never do, I looked at the time to see how much time was left to go. Because this is so unjust.
Before we all start screaming that America is a racist place and that Americans are all evil monsters, this happens in Europe too, and we just never hear about it. Afaik, in 2013 at least two under 18 black teens got shot and killed in the Netherland, 2 in France, about five in Britain, and a an African beach seller got beaten up by neo Nazis in Spain. So, let's not feel smug about it.
This happens everywhere. Trayvon Martin is a extremely gruesome case, but in Europe, this often if not always, hardly makes the news.
I am glad that at least some sort justice was delivered, because I thought for sure that the killer would walk away scot-free
Glad he didn't.
great idea, very flawed writing, big plot holes
This movie, it's sad, it could have been another Primer, but they forgot the number one rule of low budget SF: the writing must SPOTLESS. And it wasn't.
the outline is that Tom invents some machine that allows you to restore your own memory, but it can also be used to go into others peoples minds. Now, the first major plot-hole is so obvious, they should have lampooned it: Tom should have realized this himself, it should not have been a surprise to him. But when he does realize, the possibilities for abuse, like finding peoples passwords and codes seem endless. This doesn't even come up at all.
So, Tom, the inventor, gets stuck in Anthonys mind, sure. but it's weird, how come, all of a sudden after FOUR years Tom realizes that Anthony can see him? There's no change in Antony.
also, at the end, it tries to do too much at once: happy reunion with the wife, killing the drug-pusher, blame his father for the set up, realizing that Antony is innocent. Also, it's really weak sauce that this whole complicated return of Tom in his own brain, which requires a special setup with his trained assistant, can apparently also be done with a home-improvement DIY kit by his non-technical, and (understandably) overly emotional wife?? Really improbable! Also, wouldn't the priority be to call a doctor? Finally, what happens to Antony? does he go to Toms mind now, does he die? It's wholly unclear.
All in all, very sloppy writing, which should never have happened, since writing can be done without a time constraint. Sure, it might be that they had to cut too much out for time, but still Still, a sympathetic effort, but in the end, forgettable.
Very hard for black people to watch.
I suppose there are whites for whom this would be hard to watch as well, but I guess black people will identify more with the victim, to a deep emotional level.
This film won't come entirely as a shock to those who know the many injustices of American justice system. The Trayvon Martin case shows that there's still a humongous amount of class justice, or rather racist justice over there, one set of laws for whites, and one set for blacks.
This is exactly at the heart of the events in this film. A black man is brought in for questioning, because his wife was found dead in their house, having bled out. Now, as the situation becomes clear during the film, you really get the feeling, to a point of certainty, that if this had happened to a white family, the husband would NOT have been hauled in for questioning, would NOT have been treated like a criminal, would NOT have been separated from his kids all night. The problem of not being able to call a lawyer wouldn't even have arisen.
The policemen are feeling that the election of Thatcher allows them all sorts of rights they previous were denied by the Labour government: Now they feel empowered to harass every non-white person, sent them back if "they step out of line", even once.
So that's the situation: Two policemen, who feel overjoyed that the Thatcher win has now allowed them to bring their inner racist out in the open. And they judge the situation completely through a racist lens: black woman, dead, bled out, black husband, and of course blacks are animals, who are such savages that they wouldn't even use the NHS to get an abortion, so they used a screwdriver instead.
That, and not whatever a doctor told the policemen what happened, has led to the horrendous police brutality shown here.
The police jumped to the most racist conclusion their fascist minds could think up about the situation, without ever even trying to be objective about it. No! Because "blacks are animals, everyone knows that!" It took me about 2 minutes to realize that I didn't really wanna watch this movie, and I tried not to, but I got sucked in by the situation and the quality of acting.
Brownian Movement (2010)
Portraits of Michelle Williams as a prettier and German nymphomaniac.
As usual, I know nothing but the title (and sometimes who's in it) about films I'm gonna watch, not even genre, but with this one, I also saw the poster. These days, everything about movies is hugely predictive and spoilerish, so with a title like this, I could sense that it would be drama, and quite frankly, because of the poster and the likeness of Huller with Williams, I thought: Aha, some good American Indie drama.
Well, turns out I wasn't too far off, as this was definitely not some mainstream BS for the multiplexes.
Brownian Movement is a very slow study in the exposure of the dark side of perfectly well adjusted (and I hate that phrase, well-adjusted) successful medical doctor. The title refers to phenomenon that molecules in fluids still move very slowly in states of rest. To give you an impression of how slow the movie is, the first shot of the movie is a static shot of a very nice upscale apartment, about a minute long, which is long, if not an eternity, in this age of attention deficit disorders.
It's a film in three episodes, or parts, and it opens with Charlotte a pretty Berlin medical doctor renting an apartment in Brussels, where she works and lives with her husband, an architect and one child.
As it appears, Charlotte rented the apartment in order to have sex with other men, varying from the average to the highly unattractive obese. Everything is OK, until Charlotte accidentally meets one of her lovers at her husbands place of work and she gets such a fit that she faints. In part 2, she goes into therapy for this, sometimes even with her husband, while her precise condition is never clearly stated. Eventually, her medical license is revoked (which seems fascist to me, you can get your medical license revoked for sleeping around??. Or, it might be that some of her lovers were her patients as well.), and in part three, she and her husband and son, and some new children, twins are now living in India, where the film ends.
Brownian movement is an extremely understated movie, with sometimes breathtakingly cinematography, comprised mostly of static shots. The only moving shots are when the camera is in a car. Otherwise, the film is rather like leafing through someones photo book, with only shots of Charlotte in it. This might be a weakness, the medium is after all, film, and it would be a good thing to have at least some attempt at sweeping camera shots. The acting, also by the underused Bakema is superb. And of course it's very pleasing to watch the very attractive Huller, who really does look like Michelle Williams almost twin sister.
Many things remain unclear, like who is Isaac, in what language do Charlotte and Max declare their love for one another after love making, (it's not English, French or German) and why does Charlotte sleep with all this rather ugly, gross looking men? I mean, obese, hairy guy? WTF?
About that, it's nice that the movie doesn't attempt any explanations, other than Charlotte's remark that sleeping with those men and sleeping with her husband are two things which aren't related at all, and that giving an explanation would make things much worse. But it does make one curious. Then again, with movies like these, the room for discussion it leaves, will tell you much about the person you're going to see the movie with ....;)
What I really curious about is if Michelle Williams knows that she has a German twin who is as good of an actress she is, or better.
The Purge (2013)
The Purge is already happening! Read here how.
The point of The Purge is NOT showing us a good or likely way to end the recession. Nor is trying to tell us that this is a way to reduce violence.
No, the POINT of the movie is of course addressing the ridiculous gun laws in the USA and how over-the-top they've become. Sandy Hook has shown us that the subversive NRA-element in our midst doesn't really care how much kids are being killed, they're always gonna pervert any tragedy into a call for more, not less guns. When Tucson happened, they managed to convince the father of the 9 year old girl to cry and to not blame guns.
Of course, if people kill people and guns don't kill people, what the hell do they need guns for?
It's showing one likely consequence of the current gun-culture. It's asking: "What could be the ultimate consequence of lax gun laws?" Oops sorry, 'free' gun laws.
Yhe movie is not really trying to be realistic, and that is it's main weakness: The story is so full of holes, that it completely detracts from the message. It allows the gun nuts to say: "This sort of thing would never have happened to me, because I would have done this and that", like, bought a generator. Instead of addressing the real issue, namely, what do we do about all these guns in the hands of extreme fear-mongered people?
I think there's also a sizable minority, like 30-35% that truly believes that killing all the poor people will revive the economy and reduce crime. However, the MOST damaging criminals are white collar criminals, like Goldman Sachs, who openly lied to their customers, in order to sell them faulty products and still weren't indicted for fraud.
Imagine that GM sold you a faulty car with an exploding motor, and it DID explode, wouldn't GM be sued?
So, killing all the poor people would NOT reduce crime, would not solve a thing. That aspect DOES highlight an immoral, vicious and un-Christian streak in American society: the conviction that poor people are poor because they're lazy, that the poor have only themselves to blame for their poverty, and, it's CERTAINLY not the fault of the rich paying too little in taxes. That's quite a sick attitude, an extremist right-wing variation on blaming the victim. But it's an attitude that's very popular because it absolves the middle class from doing anything about poverty.
Ain't that mighty Christian of them?
A Gothic Japanese version of events
This is a very beautiful movie.
The story seems somewhat confusing.
I guess that is because i never played the game.
Still, you can enjoy the breathtaking scenery and the fight scenes. and the level of detail, the hair, the leather gloves, outfit, etc.
The characters, while ostensibly very "white", lotsa blue eyes and blond hair, all have subtle Japanese/Asian features, even the 'black' character.
What's not very subtle, but very Japanese, is the way the characters nod their approval or support, it's a typical subdued movement, very Japanese! This would address the often heard criticism of Japanese animation that it's so westernised, the round eyes, and the blondes etc.
The villains are very Gothic looking, which is creepy and weird.
Four Lions (2010)
Everyone is a giant f|_|ck-up
Huge *SPOILERS* ahead!!!
The movie is about five really incompetent jihadists, and it's a REALLY good example of why British humour is superior to American humour, which is not that hard, or European humour (harder) to do.
The story is that these four guys, Pakistani blokes, are gonna be terrorists, and they set out to be jihadists.
It's hard to say who gets mocked more: the War on Terror, the CIA who fights it, or the would-be jihadists themselves/Al Queda. Because it's shown that the so-called terrorist threat is largely exaggerated. And, we ARE TOO reminded of the underwear bomber and the shoe bomber, who actually WERE pretty incompetent.
Is making fun of a terror threat disrespectful of the victims of terror attacks? Some might feel offended, but in the end, thinking about this stuff in a humouristic and philosophical way is the best way to get over it. You can't sit around feeling all depressed for the rest of your life.
This film is a reinforcement of the observation that most criminals are quite stupid. Same goes for terrorists. It's when you get SMART terrorists, who think things trough, that mayhem ensues.
I really don't remember WHY i downloaded this, but I am really glad I did, because as per usual i knew literally NOTHING about the movie before I started watching it.
Why is this such a great movie? Well, perhaps, because the would be terrorist are so sincere, but also so clumsy, which makes the five friends so endearing. But mostly because the main message is that every one of us, is a huge f|_|ck up. All we humans do is mucking about and muddling through, and that point is especially driven home by the police and anti-terrorist snipers who, of course, get the wrong guys, kill innocent bystanders and arrest all the wrong people.
The only beef I have with this is that Kayvan Novak (Waj) seems a bit too manly and handsome to play the role of the Big Dumb Bloke.
I like the ending. It would have been wrong to have a happy ending, since happy endings are just stories that aren't finished yet.
Especially Omar, when he realizes that he's the last one, AND is the smartest of the bunch, still walks into the chemists and does his thing. I wasn't even really sad about it, the way I'm usually sad about these films where a group of friends die one by one. It was perfectly fitting: the incompetent bombers all die, and they die pretty meaningless deaths.
So, yes, everyone is a giant f-up. Except for the makers of this film, of course ... ;)
Atlas Shrugged: Part I (2011)
Stupid, and not just politically stupid.
Ayn Rand was of course someone who argued against the Soviet Union in the wrong country: America. Her irrational fear that the USA might change into Russia has led her to vent a lot of horse manure.
What's especially funny, is that, for all her hot air against anything government, she's was happy to live on a pension provided by the tax payers.
What's wrong with the message of the movie? Well, for starters, there are a number of Straw Men in the film: 1. State Science Institute? Yah, maybe in Soviet Russia. Never in America. This is unnecessarily defending private research against an non-existent enemy. Private Research AKA Big Corp abusing science just to sell you more things you don't need, has been strong in this country and is STILL very strong. 2. Flat wages? In a company? GIMME A BREAK! In a time of extreme income gap, there's little chance of that. Again, defense against a non-existent enemy.
Much of Rands ideals came true: deregulation, low to no tax for the rich and Big Corp. All these ideas crashed the economy in 2008 and it caused the euro crisis. And it seems that her ideas are still popular, judging by how close the polls are.
3. Movie falsely suggestive that individual achievements go unrewarded. NEVER EVER in the history of mankind can one person use the country's infrastructure, and freeload off of it.
What's wrong with the story of the movie itself? 1. One man, one company? In 2016, consolidation is unheard of? How could this faze a smart business man like Reardon? He could easily have CONSOLIDATED all of his business. There's no need to make him into a victim, by letting him sign all his companies away. They make it seem as if this was worse than actually giving ones children away. Actually, there might be something to that, considering the ease with which the Reichwing advises to give unwanted newly borns up for adoption.
2. Untested metal? Testing the metal BEFORE the maiden voyage is impossible?
3. Government official looks like a small nonWASPy weasel, but Reardon (Our Hero) looks like a Norse Viking God, a tennis champion.. Tsssk
This was definitely weird
spoilers, and not only on this film. you've been warned.
This was a decent film, but it certainly had it's weird and frankly, badly written moments.
It's about a 28 year old matrass sales man Brian. We know that he 28, cos his father had him when he was 52 and he's going to his father 80th birthday.
He then meets this girl, a daughter of a customer.
I really thought this was some book adaptation gone bad, because, out of the blue, this girl wants to have sex with Brian.
Also, his attacker pulls a Tyler Durden on him, which is never explained.
Also, the baby all of a sudden is already there? Weird.
It seems people are upset this is marketed as a romcom. I mean, get over it, it's not the filmmakers responsibility to deal with marketing.
This is a good film, with great actors, some of which are under used, like Clarke Peters and Leven Rambin, although she's kinda overrated.
But the story has loose ends, and not in a good, open-ended kind of way.
