Dragón Rapide (1986)
Detailed recreation about the two significant weeks leading up to the Spanish Civil War in 1936
The movie title origin is the British plane , ¨De Haviland¨ , that Franco traveled from Las Palmas De Gran Canaria to Tetuán , in the Spanish Protectorate of Morocco , for becoming himself leader of the uprising Julio 18 , 1936 . General Franco is in the Canary Islands and asks for hire a Dragon Rapide in London to help him station in Africa . Being financed by magnate banker Juán March (Pedro Del Rio) , then Luis Botín (Santiago Ramos) hires a plane to go hunting lions in Atlas mountains when really his aim to be to transport Franco (Juán Diego , married to Carmen Polo : Vicky Peña) towards Tetuán and lead the impending military uprising . For this he has the support of a large group of soldiers of the Spanish Army of Africa .
The film deals with the fifteen days leading up to the Spanish Civil War in 1936 are dramatized from many different locations in Spain , Morocco and London . It is narrated by some parallel stories , retelling historical as well as fictitious events . The picture is based on historic events , though it has some inventions and lies . It stands out the scenes of Franco with his wife and daughter . The flick is spoiled by its short-budget , interiors overusing and lacking exteriors .
The motion picture was regularly directed by Jaime Camino . Camino was a member of the ¨Barcelona School¨ . His films were strongly censored from ¨Los Felices 60¨ to ¨Largas Vacaciones Del 36¨. He directed several dramas as ¨Un Invierno En Mallorca¨ about Federico Chopin and George Sand in this island , ¨La Campanada¨ upon crisis of a middle-age man , ¨El Balcón Abierto¨ about poet Federico Garcia Lórca , a prestigious documentary titled ¨La Vieja Memoria¨ and finally ¨El Largo Invierno¨ about the end of the Spanish Civil War in Barcelona .
The actual facts of this tale were the followings : The republican government had been attempting to remove suspect generals from their posts, and so Franco (Juan Diego) was relieved as chief of staff and transferred to command of the Canary islands . Goded was replaced as Inspector General and made general of the Balearic islands ; Emilio Mola (Manuel de Blas) was moved from head of the Army of Africa to be military commander of Pamplona in Navarre . However, this allowed Mola to direct the mainland uprising , although the relationship between him and Carlist leaders was problematic . General José Sanjurjo became the figurehead of the operation, and helped to come to an agreement with the Carlists. Mola was chief planner and second in command . José Antonio Primo de Rivera was put in prison in mid-March in order to restrict the Falange. However, government actions were not as thorough as they might have been: warnings by the Director of Security and other figures were not acted upon. On 12 June , Prime Minister Casares Quiroga met General Juan Yagüe, who was rightly accused of masterminding the growing conspiracy in North Africa , but Tte. Coronel Yagüe (Damián Velasco)managed to convince Casares of his loyalty to the republic . Mola held a meeting between garrison commanders in the north of Spain on 15 June, and local authorities , on hearing of the meeting , surrounded it with Civil Guards . However, Casares ordered their removal , saying he trusted Mola. Mola began serious planning in the spring, but General Francisco Franco hesitated until early July, inspiring other plotters to refer to him as "Miss Canary Islands 1936" . Franco was a key player because of his prestige as a former director of the military academy and as the man who suppressed the Socialist uprising of 1934 . He was well respected in the Spanish Moroccan Army, Spain's strongest military forcé . He wrote a cryptic letter to Casares on 23 June , suggesting that the military was disloyal, but could be restrained if he were put in charge Casares did nothing, failing to arrest or buy off Franco, even if placing him in overall command was impossible. Franco was to be assigned control of Morocco in the new regime, and largely sidelined . On July 5, an aircraft was chartered to take Franco from the Canary Islands to Morocco. On 12 July , in Madrid, a member of the Falange named Jorge Bardina murdered Lieutenant José Castillo of the Assault Guards police forcé . The next day, members of the Assault Guards arrested José Calvo Sotelo (José Luis Pellicena) , a leading Spanish monarchist and a prominent parliamentary conservative; the original target was Gil Robles but he could not be found. Calvo Sotelo was shot by the Guards without trial . Franco's plane landed in Gran Canaria on July 14, but , based in Tenerife, he would have been unable to make the plane without the death of General Amado Balmes , military commander in Gran Canaria, who was killed in a shooting accident on July 16 . The rising was intended to be swift, but the government retained control of most of the country including Málaga, Jaén and Almería. Cadiz was taken for the rebels and General Queipo de Llano managed to secure Seville. In Madrid, the rebels were hemmed into the Montaña barracks, which fell with much bloodshed . On 19 July the cabinet headed by the newly appointed prime minister José Giral ordered the distribution of weapons to the unions, helping to defeat the rebels in Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia, which led to anarchists taking control of large parts of Aragon and Catalonia . Rebel General Goded surrendered in Barcelona and was later condemned to death.
El padre de Caín (2016)
Very good drama about the risked situation of the Guardia Civil , being massacred by the terrorist group ETA , set in Basque Country of the eighties
Drama/Thriller about sad events in Basque Country in which happened terrorism , threats and grisly killings . It contains interesting scenes , great vibration , thrilling images and sensitive moments . The Basque Country in the 80s was an extremely dangerous place , especially for the Guardia Civil . As a young lieutenant Guardia Civil called Eloy (Quim Gutiérrez) married to Mercedes (Oona Chaplin) leaves his pregnant wife in her town and is assigned to Cuartel Inxaustrrondo . It is set during ¨Años Del Plomo¨ or ¨Lead Years¨ , when Guardia Civil is really shot and killed , and the people threatened by the terrorists due to his political views . There Eloy meets a motley group of brave underlings as Sergeant Delgado (Patxi Freytez) and Bermejo (Luis Zahera) . His chief commandant (Luis Bermejo) assigns him to undercover operations and he then goes as a tenant at a boarding house run by Begoña (Aura Garrido) and a warm feeling of mutual affection grows between her and her lodger . Sooon after , Eloy is having an affair with the young innkeeper Begoña . The movie ends declaring the following : After 50 years of activity and almost 1000 killings , in October 20, 2001 ETA announced a definitive truce , but has not delivered the weapons .
Moving drama/thriller plenty of emotion , suspense , intrigue , delusions , plot twists , excellent action scenes and real events about the dangerous Basque Country . As the starring exposes : This isn't ¨Fort Apache¨ , this is Vietnam . The picture depicts a nice portrayal about Basque Country , despite being somewhat of a cinematic cliché , rarely has a feature been so aptly deserving of its description as a thriller picture along with some elements from action genre , politics , intense drama and bloody terrorism . This fiction is based on a novel by former Secretary of State for Security , Rafael Vera , and is recreated in the historic headquarters of the Civil Guard of Intxaurrondo in San Sebastian , but being really shot in Avilés , Asturias , to avoid possible problems in the Basque Country . The picture is pretty well , but also has a few conventional pitfalls and a twisted as well as little credible final . Anyway, its is compensated with the great performances from main cast , Quim Gutiérrez and Aura Garrido , and special mention for Patxi Freytez as an understanding sergeant . And great support cast such as : Oona Chaplin , Luis Bermejo , Mariano Venancio , Cristina Plazas , Teresa Hurtado de Ory , Patrick Criado , and , of course , Luis Zahera .
But some Guardia Civil agents have criticized the mini-series , as those agents assigned to that barracks or who were in the past have not liked what they have seen on television . First thing that catches their attention is the presence of controls in the so-called "entrances" in roadblocks to detain Etarras , in fiction it is observed that in these operatives they participate lieutenants or colonels , when it is not so . They don't agree with the image of supposed tortures that are reflected in the series in dependencies of the Civil Guard . On the screen it was seen that these tortures took place in the dungeons of Intxaurrondo , but they report that in the Donostiarra barracks these temporary cells were not built until about ten years ago . Civil guards also complain that the series has not had the help of the real professionals who spent decades to stop ETA . If they had asked for help , they criticized, they would have recommended that the feeling of persecution of the civil guards in the street should be reflected on the screen . "We were singled out and insulted," they complain, "and that's not reflected in the series" .
The film packs a colorful cinematography by Felipe Alba and a thrilling as well as evocative musical score by Victor Reyes . The mini-series was compellingly directed by Salvador Calvo who has made successful TV Series and episodes such as ¨Lo Que Escondían Sus Ojos¨ , ¨Mario Conde¨ , ¨La Duquesa¨ , ¨Askrana¨ , ¨Paquirri¨ , ¨Cuentame Un Cuento¨ , and has directed for cinema the hit ¨Los Ultimos De Filipinas¨ .
Patrimonio nacional (1981)
Second installment to Leguineche saga , full of humor , sourness and deep critical
Second part of the Leguineche preceded by "The National Shotgun" and completed by "National III" . Spanish coral film with a merciless denounce to hypocrite society located at a luxury mansion , being professionally directed by the veteran Berlanga and full of a high level of ingenious humor , including relentless critical in malevolent intention . A bustling comedy with a big plethora of players and an interesting script . After the death of Franco (1975) and the restoration of the monarchy , the Marquis of Leguineche (Luis Escobar) along with his misfit family return to this palace in Madrid , at Cibeles Square . After thirty years of voluntary exile in his farm-mansion in Los Tejadillos , Guadalajara , the marquis intends to approach the King to resume the court life of yesteryear . However , it is not so easy to access to the Royal Family . In Madrid palace he meets his invalidated old wife (Mary Santpere) . Then , arguments and disputes emerge among the left-wing marquis , the Francoist marchioness and her ex-lover Nacho (Alfredo Mayo) . The marquis and his son Luis José (José Luis López Vázquez) , helped by his nephew Alvaro (José Luis De Villalonga) -married to beautiful French woman Solange (in real-life Villalonga spouse Syliane Stella)- attempt to incapacitate the marchioness . Meantime , they try to reform the ruined palace to give aristocratic parties . But then problems emerge when there appears two Finance Inspectors , and the resourceful marquis has to do everything to get his aims , as becoming the palace into a museum .
After getting success with the first part and a great popularity by Luis Escobar playing the offbeat marquis , it led to filmmaker Berlanga , writer Azcona and producer Alfredo Matas to make this second outing "National Heritage" , dealing with the national policy and monarchy restoration by Juan Carlos I . In the flick there are especially busy comedy , ironical humor , frantic pace , amusing gags , rowdy satire , strange roles , noisy hustle and social critical . Furthermore , it contains certain confusion and relies heavily in exaggerated mayhem ; being in anyway clearly inferior to former film . One time finished the Franquist dictatorship , Berlanga along with his regular screenwriter Azcona carry out the realization a known trilogy about the political and social Spanish situation , concerning on the peculiar aristocratic family of the Marquis of Leguineche . Shot in long , complex shots : ¨Planos Secuencia¨, with a lot of rare roles talking , shouting and walking . The main and support actors stand out under perfect direction of Berlanga very far from the tenderness that carried out in previous works , including a bitter , pessimistic mirror on the Spanish society by that time and of the egoistic aristocracy , especially . We can find very fun roles , all of them caricatures and mirrors of the Spanish society . The movie displays a Spanish star-studded , such as : the sex-hungry Jose Luis López Vázquez , the loud-mouthed priest Agustin González (Berlanga's also regular), Amparo Soler Leal (married to producer) , Chus Lampreave (Almodovar's ordinary), and , of course , Luis Ciges . And brief roles and cameos by the graphic humorist Mingote , writer Joaquin Calvo Sótelo , stage director José Luis Alonso and filmmaker Francisco Regueiro . Its big success originated ¨Nacional III¨(82) about the power rising of Socialists with Felipe Gonzalez . Berlanga's conceptual and political audacity, so evident in this film that achieved a considerable hit . It turned out to be a nice picture plenty of diverting situations as well as black humor and social hypocrisy .
Direction by Luis Garcia Berlanga is acceptable but inferior to precedent film , he shows his skill for edition , realizing long shots with crowd who moves easily and shows the miseries of an amoral society. Berlanga filmed several polemic movies during the 50s , all of them were beset by difficulties with the censors caused by real critical to social stratum such as ¨Bienvenido Mister Marshall¨ (1953) , a very good film which tended not to be very well received by the censor for its acidity and considered to be one of the best Spanish films of the history , including a strong portrait of Spanish society . His next joint venture was ¨Los Jueves, Milagro¨ (1957), it was modified by the censors and delayed for several years before its eventual release . Subsequently , Berlanga made ¨Placido¨ (1961) , this is the film debut for the great producer Alfredo Matas and received an Oscar nomination in 1963 , being well-received at the International Festivals , reviewing the useless charity , it's a sublime film but with censorship . Later on , Berlanga made one of his best films : ¨El Verdugo¨ (1963), one of the undisputed masterpieces and fundamental in filmography of Luis Garcia Berlanga and shot at the height of his creativity, in a period cultural difficult , where the enormous censorship of the political regime , exacerbated the ingenuity and imagination of the scriptwriters . He continued filming other interesting pictures , as in 1973 he went to Paris to begin filming ¨Grandeur nature¨ focusing on the fetishism of a man who falls in love with a doll . After Franco's death, he filmed the ¨Leguineche Trilogy¨ where he clarified the evident disorders in the Spanish upper , middle-class upon being confronted with a new political status quo , realizing a sour denounce of the Spanish society . Soon after , he made ¨La Vaquilla¨ (1985) set in the Spanish Civil War , resulting to be the first time dealing with this convulsive period in comedy style . Following the same themes, he went on filming coral films such as ¨Moros and Cristianos¨ and ¨Todos a Carcel¨ (1993) that won Goya Awards ; being his final film : ¨Paris Tombuctu¨.
Il figlio di Django (1967)
So-so Spaghetti about an avenger who sets out to avenge the murder of his father , Django .
Ravioli Western with a professional Italian director and two main actors from Spaghetti : Tinti and Madison . This is an exciting film , plenty action , thrills , fights , and starking outdoors from El Lacio , Rome . This violent Western is set on dirty outdoors and evocative interiors , the star is a mysterious revenger who searches for the killer of his father , who comes to a dangerous town and taking on nasty villainous . It deals with an avenger named Jeff Tracy (Gabrielle Tinti), he gone back from a dark past to revenge his parent . Jeff searches for the killer of his infamous daddy , the implacable gunslinger Django . He arrives in a small town , a location called Topeka dominated by violent gangs . In that place there is a feared band led by Clay and his nasty gunfighters . Jeff faces off two wealthy owners Clay Ferguson (Daniele Vargas) and Thompson (Ignazio Spalla or Pedro Sanchez) , both of whom are feuding over business . Thereby involved in a war between two factions headed by former acquaintances of his father . Meanwhile , Tracy saves a damsel in distress called Jane Grayson (Ingrid Schoeller) from Ferguson's hoodlums .
Ordinary Western follows the Sergio Leone wake , as it is proceeded in Spaghetti models more than the American Western style . It's a moving western with breathtaking gunfight between the protagonist Gabriele Tinti against the heartless Daniele Vargas and his henchmen ; in addition , a stirring ending fight in the saloon and town square . This movie is a lot of fun to watch , packing elaborate shoot-outs , moving filming , and portentous close-ups of grime-encrustred faces with bloodbaths included . It's an entertaining story with a touch of peculiarity , some offbeat as well as violent roles , and an amazing music score . The picture is a tale of justice and revenge , as a tough man seeks vendetta and his objective results to be a bloody revenge . The basic plot is typical spaghetti western fare , but what makes this movie stand out is its style . The picture is well starred by Gabriele Tinti . Tinti is appropriate in his usual two-fisted character , he ravages the screen , shoots , hit and run and kills . Tinti began playing brief drama roles , in the early 50s , as "Chronicle of Poor Lovers¨ . From there , Gabriele went on acting in sword-and-sandal epics , later moving onto the Western genre , wartime , thrillers and erotic films along with his then wife , Laura Gemser , where he found his niche . The handsome , Italian-born Tinti may be a name best remembered by Soft-core aficionados , he was one of the most popular actors of the genre from the mid-'60s to 70s and 80 until his early death at 59 . Tinti performed a lot of cheap B movies , some of them , nowadays , revered cult classics . Gabriele also interpreted in support roles some international productions as ¨The flight of the Phoenix¨, ¨Guns for Cordoba¨, ¨Riders on the rain¨ and ¨Delusions of Grandeur¨. However , he never became a top international box-office attraction . His acting is often accused of being wooden , but in many manners is ideally suited to playing the steely-faced gunslinger synonymous with the genre . "Son of Django" also starred by Guy Madison , actor who had his first major role in "Until the End of Time" a drama directed by Edward Dmytryk, 1946 to then changed in action roles , mainly series B westerns , get some success with the series "Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok" and ends up traveling in Europe in the sixties where he made a lot of Euro-westerns , such as : ¨Duel at Rio Bravo¨ , ¨7 Winchester for a massacre¨ , ¨Bang bang Kid¨, ¨Five for revenge¨ and ¨Reverend Colt¨ , the latter he played a priest , too . Support cast is plenty of familiar faces , appearing the Spaghetti ordinary roles , such as : Daniele Vargas , Ignazio Spalla , Ivan Scratuglia , Luciano Rossi , Andrea Scotti , Roberto Messina and John Bartha . There is plenty of action in the movie , guaranteeing some shoot'em up or stunts every few minutes . There is a very odd implementation of shots in the camera work during some particular scenes as the film approaches its climax , such as in the final gunfights . The movie gets the usual Western issues , as avenger antiheroes , violent facing off , exaggerated baddies and spectacular duels , excessive zooms , among them . The musician Piero Umiliani composes a nice soundtrack in Morricone style and well conducted , this turns out to be one of the most memorable parts of the movie ; as it's full of enjoyable sounds and haunting musical background . The soundtrack contributes tremendously to the atmosphere of the film, including an emotive leitmotif , and some wonderful songs ; the music score is perhaps the best part of this film . Striking and atmospheric cinematography by Nanuzzi .
Osvaldo Civirani's direction is professionally crafted , here he is more inclined toward violence and packs too much action , but especially this thrilling Western contains long shoot'em up . He directed this average/passable western , genre in which he would not only excel but one where he would spent much of the rest of his career , as he wrote/directed some Spaghettis , such as : "Rick and John, Conquerors of the West" , "Trusting Is Good... Shooting Is Better" , "Two Sons of Trinity" . Although he also directed other genres as Peplum : ¨"Kindar the Invulnerable" , "La Magnifica Sfida" , ¨The adventures of Hércules¨ and thrillers/Eurospy genre as "The Beckett Affair" , and "Operazione poker"
La marrana (1992)
Average comedy by Jose Luis Cuerda about two starving drifters walk throughout the Spanish ways in 1492
Bustling historical comedy film with several known actors , ridiculous moments and embarrassing situations . It is set in the summer of 1492 , when takes place the Jews expulsion ; after spending three years prisoner in Tunisia , Bartolome (Alfredo Landa) returns to his land Extremadura in Spain . Along the way he meets a deserter (Antonio Resines) who wants to go Portugal and is accompanied by a pig . Both of whom join forces and roam together , suffering starving , facing off several adventures , risks and enemies , such as ¨La Santa Hermandad¨ and mean bandits . At the same time they stop at Monasteries and brothels , where meet all kind of strange roles , as whores (Cayetana Guillen Cuervo) , a friar (Fernando Rey) expert on fornication , among others . At the end they arrive in the port of Palos where Colon accompanied by others sailors , three magnificent navigators : Martín Alonso Pinzón , Vicente Yáñez Pinzón and Juán De La Cosa aboard their boats : ¨La Pinta¨ , ¨Niña¨ and ¨Santamaría¨ . As Cólon and his seamen set off for America .
Uproaring comedy plenty of laughs , disconcerting incidents , nudism , bad taste and mayhem . This road movie contains an acute studio about two rogue men and showing the picaresque life by that time . A numerous cast plays a lot of characters headed by two great actors : Landa and Resines and several known secondaries . This is a disconcerting flick by Jose Luis Cuerda who also efficiently wrote/produced/directed and resulted to get an acceptable success at Spanish Box office . "La Marrana" is a Spanish film contribution to the commemoration of 500 anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus and at the same time were shot other two films ¨1492¨ by Ridley Scott , and ¨Christopher Columbus: The Discovery¨. All of them were financed by State Society of fifth Centenary . Screenwriter , Director Jose Luis Cuerda tells his special humor in which blends life , religion , sex and surrealist incidents . Alfredo Landa gives a masterful acting , as usual , as the roguish person with the hope of eating their favorite food : sow . It Won ADIRCAE Award Best Actor Alfredo Landa , Goya Awards 1993 , Won Goya Best Lead Actor and Nominated Award of the Spanish Actors Union Filmb: Lead Performance Alfredo Landa . Support cast is frankly excellentb, such as Manuel Alexandre , Fernando Rey , Agustín González , Cayetana Guillén Cuervo , El Gran Wyoming , Antonio Gamero , Antonio Dechent . And several cameos as José Luis Cuerda , the cameraman Hans Burmann , Javier Artiñano and the producer Rafael Díaz-Salgado . Atmospheric musical score , mostly by violin . Evocative cinematography by Hans Burmann who was nominated Goya Best Cinematography , shot on location in Veruela, Vera de Moncayo, Zaragoza, Aragón .
The motion picture was regularly directed by José Luis Cuerda . Cuerda is a veteran professional , being his film debut ¨Pares and Nones¨ a typical Madrid comedy . He subsequently directed ¨El Bosque Animado¨ also with script by notorious Rafael Azcona and based on Wenceslao Fernandez Florez's novel . He followed directing failures as a drama titled ¨Viuda De Capitan Contreras¨ and more comedies as ¨La Marrana¨ and ¨Tocando Fondo¨ . His greatest success corresponds as producer , as he produced hits for Alejandro Amenabar as ¨Tesis¨ and ¨Abre Los Ojos¨, among others . His highly-acclaimed and successful movie was ¨Lengua De Mariposas¨ , it has a rating as better than average and is a beautiful and powerful film . His most personal movies were two comedies with a peculiar and surrealist sense of humor , this ¨Amanece Que no Es Poco¨ and the following titled ¨Asi en el Cielo Como en Tierra¨ but in anti-religion tendency .
Decent Western story about a refined lady/Sarah Miles who joins a gang of robbers led by Burt Reynolds
This exciting Western is a reasonable engaging tale in which a wealthy woman traveling by herself on horseback leaves her husband to take up riding with outlaws who have robbed a safe . At first , after a chance encounter , a beautiful lady called Catherine Crocker (Sarah Miles) recently escaped from her abusive hubby becomes involved with a band of train robbers led by Jay Grobart (Burt Reynolds , this was one of his first romantic love-stories on the screen) and three other men : Dawes (Jack Warden) , Billy Bowen (Bo Hopkins) and an Indian named Charlie Bent (Varela) who have carried out a robbing a train of its Wells Fargo cargo of $100,000 . In their escape from the crime scene they are chased by a motley group of bounty hunters . Jay has the ordinary problems of managing the three bandits , Dawes and Billy in particular who want to rape the attractive lady . In meantime , they are pursued by a posse led by the tough Harvey Lapchance (Lee J. Cobb), including a mining executive , Willard Crocker (George Hamilton) who results to be Catherine's husband . But the go-riding gets harder , as the bunch fall out among themselves and things go worse .
The plot is plain and simple , a dangerous gang on the lam are forced out of circumstance to take along an elegant lady -who holds a dark secret- , against her will , as she , like them , is running away ; while she is harassed and finally falls in love with the main star . As the picture reveals itself to be a romance and a throughly love story . The phrase "Cat Dancing" of the film and source novel's title refers to the name of the first wife of this movie's central character Jay performed by Burt Reynolds . It's a love on the run in which the protagonists , Jay/Burt and Catherine/Sarah , along the journey learn more about what is under the surface , and both of whom start to fall for each other ; as their tragic pasts coming close to making us care . Good interpretation all around . Burt Reynolds gives a passable acting as an outlaw on the run after avenging his spouse's murder and who has a posse on his trail . Burt Reynolds and Jack Warden apparently insisted on doing their own stunts for this movie . That's why the production filming was shut-down for a week when the movie's star Burt Reynolds was injured on the set from a stunt fight with Jack Warden . This movie is one of a number of screen westerns that Burt Reynolds made during the mid-late 1960s and early 1970s , these movie westerns include Navajo Joe (1966) ; 100 rifles (1969) ; Sam Whisky (1969) and this one . Sarah Miles is acceptable as Catherine Crocker , she was only cast in the lead role just a short time before production started shooting . Support cast is pretty good , such as : the good-looking George Hamilton as Willard Crocker , Lee J . Cobb as Harvey Lapchance , the investigator for Wells Fargo who has a posse of men on their command . Furthermore , Bo Hopkins , Robert Donner , Nancy Malone and Jay Silverheels who played several times the Indian role . Michel Legrand was originally hired to compose the musical score for the film but studio executives informed him that his score was not what they felt the film needed and that he was being dismissed, being replaced by the great John Williams . It packs a colorful and evocative cinematography by Harry Stradling Jr.
The motion picture was professionally directed by Richard C Sarafian , though Steven Spielberg William Norton and Brian G. Hutton both declined offers to direct this movie , as Sarafian became this movie's director after the original director left the project . Sarafian was a good craftsman . While employed as a reporter in Kansas City , he met the director, Robert Altman, who hired Sarafian as his assistant. Sarafian has a fruitful career making TV episodes and films and directing a classic iconic movie : Vanishing Point¨ (1971) , as his car chase sequence served as inspiration for Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof (2007) . Richard portrayed two real-life Mafia figures: Jack Dragna in ¨Bugsy¨ (1991) and Paul Castellano in ¨Gotti¨ (1996). And directed a lot of dramas and thrillers as ¨Gangster Wars¨ , ¨The next man¨, ¨Solar Crisis¨, ¨Run Wild , Run Free¨, ¨Terror at Black falls¨, ¨Fragment of Fear¨ , ¨Street Justice¨ and ¨Eye of the tiger¨
La strada (1954)
Fellini masterpiece about a simple-minded woman sold to a brutal traveling showman and both of them tour on the road
Sad story of a waif , shy woman , Gelsomina (Giulietta Massina , Federico's real-life wife) , who is sold by her mother to Zampano for 10,000 lire and a few kilos of food . Brute Zampano (Anthony Quinn) is a cruel , coarse , strong-man who shows his vigour by breaking a chain wrapped around his chest . They tour on the road ("la Strada") , along the countryside where they perform in village squares and she helps him as a drummer during his shows and passing the hat for whatever the regularly small crowd is prepared to give . They join a small traveling circus where eventually meet up with a gentle acrobat (Richard Basehart) and the unexpected happenings go wrong .
Sensitive and agreeable film film packs intense drama , emotion , good feeling and tragedy . The picture is , by turns , strong and amusing . Here Fellini demonstrates a real sensibility to the underprivileged of the world and his belief in spiritual redemption . Fellini's fantasy ostensibly elucidates the inner life of a poor and normally mistreated woman . The flick contains a highly symbolic internal logic , enjoyable imagery and bizarre , abstract plot peppered with risqué humor . Here Fellini uses the unfortunate story of a distressed woman delivering over her life to create a good and often wild film . The film relies heavily on the peculiar relationship between Gelsomina and Zampano , but it doesn't make boring but interesting ; as he doesn't treat her well and when she tries to run away , he beats her . Magnificent interpretations all around . Trio protagonist is frankly awesome . Nice performance by Giulietta Massina as the waif sold by her very poor mother and she feels like going with him , but he puts confusion in her mind and finally falls in love with him despite his abuse . Excellent Anthony Quinn as the traveling , itinerant showman , Zampano exhibits feats of strength and meanwhile he ill-treats her . Anthony Quinn was working on a film with Giulietta Masina when she introduced him to her husband , Federico who was immediately convinced that the Mexican actor would make the perfect Zampano the strongman in his new film , which was to become La Strada (1954), and implored him to accept the character . And sympathetic acting by Richard Basehart as a tight-rope walker "The Fool", a funambulist who convinces Gelsomina to question her choices . Well produced by two greatest Italian producers , Dino De Laurentiis and Carlo Ponti , who originally wanted Silvana Mangano , Dino's wife , and Burt Lancaster as the leads . However , at the beginning Federico Fellini had an extraordinarily difficult time finding producers who were willing to back the film and he began shooting the film before any financial backers had officially signed on .
The motion picture was masterfully directed by Federico Fellini , he admitted that he each of the principal characters in the film represented the elements . Zampano represented the Earth , Gelsomina represented water, and the Fool represented air . It won the first ever Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (1956) and N.Y Critics Award to Foreign Film (56) . Fellini who inspired the word "Felliniesque" was one of the best Italian filmmakers/writers . He frequently cast Marcello Mastroianni and Giulietta Masina and Score by Nino Rota . His best works include dreams like imagery and nostalgia . He made Italian classics , such as : ¨8 and 1/2¨, ¨Roma¨, ¨Satyricon¨, ¨I Vitellone¨ , ¨La Dolce Vita¨ , ¨The clowns¨, ¨Casanova¨, ¨And the ship sails on¨, "City of Women" , "Orchestra Rehearsal" and directed his spouse Giulietta in various films such as : ¨The white sheik¨ , ¨Il Bidone¨, ¨Juliet of the Spirits¨, "The Nights of Cabiria" ¨Ginger and Fred¨ and including some auto-biographic elements , especially in ¨Amarcord¨ (1973) , though he denied his film is autobiographical , but agreed that there are similarities with his own childhood .
Alba de América (1951)
A dated and spectacular portrayal of the greatest explorer , made in big budget but with lousy interpretations
Spanish epic movie , being starred by all-Spanish--¡star cast and is packed with strong ideological charge , great production and spectacular scenes . It takes an old approach the ambitious adventurer , Christopher Columbus/Antonio Vilar , who thanks to Fray Juan Pérez/Jesús Tordesillas , Queen's confessor , finally gets the Queen of Spain , Isabel/Amparo Rivelles to agree to finance his voyage . This ¨Colón¨ concerns the essential story of discovery with political confrontation behind , including known characters , Fray Marchena , R.R.C.C. , Martín Alonso Pinzón , Juán De La Cosa , Rodrigo De Triana , among others . When is about a mutiny aboard his boat , Cristóbal tells his life by means of a long flashback . As Colón following the theories of Marino De Tiro and Toscanelli and driven by his sense of destiny , tries to convince firstly to Juan II , King of Portugal , of the practicality of his proposed voyage to reach to Far East by sailing west . Being rejected by Juan II , Colón , then , goes to the Rabida Monastery and asks for help Fray Juan Perez who convinces Queen Isabella and Fernando De Aragón (José Suárez) that his plan to reach the East by sailing west is practical . Throughout seven years Colón bears great number of intrigues , particularly the Jew banker Isaac (Manuel Luna) , a traitor , the French named Gastón (Eduardo Fajardo) as well as other events as Granada war , including fight against Boabdil el Chico , all of them roadblocks to the voyage , but thanks to the efforts of Colón , the navigator perseveres and ultimately prevails . As driven by his sense of destiny , the famous discoverer left his lover Beatriz (Maria Martin) and crossed the sea of darkness in search of honor , gold and the greater glory of God . In 1492 accompanied by others sailors , three magnificent navigators : Martín Alonso Pinzón (José Marco Davo) , Vicente Yáñez Pinzón (Antonio Almoros) and Juán De La Cosa (Antonio Casas) aboard their boats : ¨La Pinta¨ , ¨Niña¨ and ¨Santamaría¨ , Cólon and his seamen set off for America and finally arrive in the island of San Salvador.
This picture contains a lot of historical remarks with inclusion some re-enacting of fundamental deeds as the capitulations of Santa Fé between Colón and Catholic Kings or Granada conquest . This film was highly budgeted by CIFESA as well as sponsored by the Spanish government when infuriated by the British -prohibited by censorship- ¨Christopher Columbus¨(1949) by David McDonald with Fredric March in which the Spanish people were panned by critics , and the extreme contempt , being really scorned ; that's why here was impulsed to make a patriotic movie and being largely financed . As Admiral Carrero Blanco promoted a lavish film with quite a few budget (10 million pesetas) patronized by Culture Institute . It caused a strong confrontation between a splendid movie ¨Surcos¨(1951) by J.A. Nieves Conde that was supported by the General Director of Cinema and ¨Dawn of America¨ , it resulted in the firing of the General Director José Maria García Escudero . The flick is spoiled by overacting , most play similarly to stage actors ; as the influence of the theater in players results to be extreme and embarrassing , specially by Antonio Vilar who gives a ridiculous performance , usually looking at horizon and declaiming silly and symbolic sentences . The settings (Sevilla studios) are acceptable though mostly made in ¨Carton-Piedra (stone)¨ , as well as matte-painting . Decent cinematography in black and white by Alfredo Fraile , the finales scenes when three boats arrive in San Salvador were actually shot in Benidorm when there wasn't tourism . And atmospheric and evocative score by Juán Quintero . The motion picture was lavishly produced by CIFESA , the most known production company during Francoist period , that often financed these false but breathtaking historical spectacles . Being regularly directed by Juán De Orduña who made a dull , tiring and overlong film . Alba De America is considered to be one of the worst super-productions of the powerful Francoist company CIFESA and it caused its fall and it went subsequently bankrupt . With director Florian Rey , Orduña formed the production company "Goya Films" . Juán adapted to cinema famous novels such as : ¨Zalacaín El Aventurero¨ , ¨Cañas Y Barro¨ , ¨El Frente De Los Suspiros¨ , ¨Nobleza Baturra¨ , ¨Lola Se Va a Los Huertos¨ , being especially known for his historical renditions such as : ¨Teresa De Jesús¨ , ¨La Leona De Castilla¨ , ¨Agustina De Aragón¨ and ¨Locura De Amor¨ . His most successful picture was ¨El Ultimo Cuple¨ with Sara Montiel .
Other adaptations about this historic role are the followings : Christopher Columbus (1949) with Fredric March , Florence Eldridge and directed by David McDonald ; Columbus (1985) with Gabriel Byrne , Faye Dunaway and directed by Alberto Lattuada ; The Discovery (1992) by John Glenn with George Corraface and Marlon Brando ; and ¨1492¨ by Ridley Scott with Gerard Depardieu , Sigourney Weaver . And Spanish/Italian TV version by Vittorio Cottafavi with Francisco Rabal as Colombus considered one of the best renditions about this immortal character .
John Wayne vehicle as a tough cop goes in search of vendetta on the villains who killed his friend
This thrilling movie is a genuine ripping yarn with intrigue , mystery , tension and outstanding twists plots . An agreeable all action seventies nostalgia trip , being fast paced and rightly developed . The picture is packed with a stuffed ragbag of drugs , heavy arms and cars . Seattle cop Lon McQ (aging Wayne , he was 66 when he played a cop for the first time) investigates the murder of his best friend , Stan Boyle (William Bryant) , and the corruption within the police department . McQ believes Manuel Santiago (Al Lettieri) is behind this killing . McQ is a peculiar cop who lives on a boat (this boat McQ lives on actually belonged to John Wayne) and using mercilessly weapons (introducing the MAC-10 submachine gun to the general public and creating a demand for it) against enemy . As defying the orders of his superior , Captain Ed Kosterman (Eddie Albert) , lieutenant McQ takes justice on his own hands , he resigns to track them down . McQ enlists the help of private detective "Pinky" (David Huddleston) and J . C. (Jordan Christopher) . Meanwhile , McQ becomes involved with a twisted intrigue filled with narcotics , corrupt people , big dope dealers , shotguns and traitors . McQ driving his car Brewster Green 1973 Pontiac pursues and shoots nasties , mobsters and corrupt police officers . Including an exciting and breathtaking finale car chase .
One of Duke's last movies with a more work modern day assignment than most . Stepping out of his ordinary Westerns and into the character of a Seattle police man , here Big Duke goes in search of revenge on the gangsters who killed his best friend . Although , it was originally intended as a vehicle for Steve McQueen , it was heavily rewritten for John Wayne . John Wayne starred in this film , along with Brannigan (1975) , because he missed out on starring in Dirty Harry (1971). Stirring film in which there are nail-biting action scenes , intrigue , blasts , suspenseful set pieces and a big star as well as an excellent plethora of secondaries such as : Eddie Albert , Colleen Dewhurst , Clu Gulager , David Huddleston , Al Lettieri , Roger E. Mosley , Julian Christopher , and Julie Adams . This thrilling film is just a rip-off of Bullit (1968) and Dirty Harry , taking parts here and there . Colorful and atmospheric cinematography by Harry Stradling . Including the spectacular ending sequence in which McQ (Wayne) and Lois (Diana Muldaur) driving along the coast , it was filmed on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State ; there were filming delays when the beach was foggy . Original musical score by the classic Elmer Bernstein , including a catching leitmotif .
The motion picture was compelling and forcefully directed , thanks capable hands of filmmaker John Sturges , if not much continuity , though at the beginning he was opposed to the casting of John Wayne in the title role , due to the actor's age . This is the only movie westerns director John Sturges and westerns film actor John Wayne made together . The redoubtable John demonstrates his skill and mettle here . Sturges was a warlike genre expert (Great escape , Never so few , The Eagle has landed) and Western master (Gunfight OK Corral , Last train of Gun Hill , The law and Jake Wade , Magnificent Seven , Escape from Fort Bravo ). McQ rating: 6.5/10 , Acceptable and passable. It is like Dirty Harry done with a veteran Big Duke . Well worth seeing , the movie will appeal to John Wayne fans .
Complex and overlong crime drama dealing with two Inspectors investigating three murdered people who belonged to Fifth column
Ambitious drama with acceptable atmosphere and nice production design by Gil Parrondo , though falls flat and is regularly developed . Spanish drama/thriller/suspense movie about killings , treason and political intrigue . Madrid 1942 , in Retiro Park happens a murder , as two Police Inspectors Ángel Barciela (Carmelo Gómez) and Paco Valduque (Ángel Andrés López) carry out the assignment to discover the culprit . A bit later on , other two murders take place . They find out the three killed men were hidden tenants -during Spanish civil war- from Buendía family formed by Enrique (Miguel Palenzuela) , Pilar (Montserrat Carulla) and their sons : Julia (Emma Suárez) and Luis Buendía (Aitor Merino) . The three lodgers belonged to the ¨fifth column¨ from the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) when Madrid was really besieged . Soon after , Ángel Barciela falls in love for Julia Buendía whose former boyfriend (Tony Cantó) , a communist militant , was killed during the deadly war .
This is an acceptable film that packs thrills , suspense , love stories , twists and turns . Thrilling film with intrigue , plot twists but slow , deliberately paced and ultimately turns out to be a little boring . The story fails when deals with historical-political deeds , including a flawed , confuse , embarrassing screenplay and surprising finale . Based on the homonymous novel by the politician Joaquin Leguina , whose title is taken from a poem by Luis Cernuda and with script by Ricardo Franco , Pilar Miró and uncredited Ángeles González Sinde . Developed by means of flashbacks set in three periods that interweave the difficult story : during the Spanish Civil war in Madrid siege , the forties (1942) and early fifties (1952) . The picture bears some remarkable resemblances to ¨Beltreneros¨ by Miró in which there is also a resourceful professional who investigates crimes and he is keen on a beautiful Femme Fatale . Nice acting all around , Cármelo Gómez and Emma Suarez make a perfect couple , and deliver a deep chemical . Although the picture gives more importance the unconvincing role of Police Inspector than the calculating , cold woman with whom he has a loving relationship . The picture contains a lot of inter-courses , nude men-women and love scenes in soft-core style . Including a spotless pictorial cinematography by Javier Aguirresarobe and a willingness , almost perfect of the elements of each shot , every sequence , every space ; being rightly filmed on location in Madrid . Aguirresarobe subsequently would make a prestigious career in Hollywood . Here stands out the emotive and inspired musical score by the great José Nieto .
The film gives a detailed description of the ¨Fifth column¨. It is any group who undermine a larger groupsuch as a nation or a besieged cityfrom within, usually in favor of an enemy group or nation. The activities of a fifth column can be overt or clandestine. Forces gathered in secret can mobilize openly to assist an external attack. This term is also extended to organized actions by military personnel. Clandestine fifth column activities can involve acts of sabotage, disinformation, or espionage executed within defense lines by secret sympathizers with an external forcé . In fact , Emilio Mola, a Nationalist general during the Spanish Civil War, told a journalist in 1936 that as his four columns of troops approached Madrid, a "fifth column" of supporters inside the city would support him and undermine the Republican government from within . The term was then widely used in Spain . Ernest Hemingway used it as the title of his only play, which he wrote in Madrid while the city was being bombarded, and published in 1938 in his book The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories.
The motion picture was professionally directed by Pilar Miro . In 1982 Pilar was designated General Director of Cinema . She was an expert filmmaker of Television episodes and occasionally for cinema , getting some successes , such as ¨La Petición¨, ¨The dog in the manger¨ or ¨El Perro del Hortelano¨, ¨The bird of happiness¨ , ¨Werther¨ , and especially ¨The Cuenca crime¨ that had big hit . But also had some flops as ¨Hablamos Esta Noche¨ ,¨Beltreneros¨ that failed at the box office . "Your Name Poisons My Dreams" resulted to have a limited success , in spite of a very good cast cast , luxurious set production and enjoyable atmosphere . Rating : 6/10 , decent and passable .
