Clerks II (2006)
Could have been better
Unlike the original, Clerks 2 has much more of a plot to it and a romantic one at that. I was a little sketchy about it upon viewing it, but the ending had be done as it brought much more closer to the clerks' series.
However, it gets too sappy at some points, not many customers show up throughout the whole movie (not nearly as many as when they were at the quickstop), the movie is in color (I didn't really mind the sequel being in color, but at the same time, the black and white picture actually enhanced the viewing of the original. So could the sequel have been better in black and white? Who Knows?) and the ending is somewhat predictable.
Moreover, Clerks 2 is a very worthy sequel that contains its fare share of laughs and crude humor. Die hard fans of the jay and silent bob series need not be disappointed as the 6th installment is one of his better films to date. Way better than Chasing Amy, Jay & Silent Bob strike back, and perhaps even mallrats. Still I believe either dogma or clerks is Kevin Smith's greatest film. I won't even mention that "other" film he did... don't get me started...that movie was atrocious.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)
Absorbing and Shocking!
"Emily Rose" was a great and powerful film.
It was a great idea to center the film around the court case, rather than going for a straight horror approach. The whole medical explanation vs spiritual explanation debate of the case is what makes the film so entertaining. And they leave it open ended, as both sides plead their case very well, leaving some audience members convinced of one, others convinced of the other.
Regardless, it gets the audience thinking, examining, exploring the possibilities available. Very well done. Great script, great visually, great sound. Very very well done. Strong performances by Laura Linney, Tom Wilkinson (who even looks like a priest), Jennifer Carpenter, Campbell Scott, and Duncan Fraser. I really enjoyed this film. One of the most gripping and entertaining films of the year, by far. It keeps you on the edge of your seat, guessing who's going to win the trial, as the momentum sways back and forth. I highly recommend seeing this film. In a year of terrible films, this one has few peers.
