Kick-Ass 2 (2013)
My Review (Spoilers)
To start off I'm going to give it somewhere between 6 and 7 stars. It was enjoyable and had it's funny/good moments, but had it's setbacks as well (which I will get into more detail a bit later on) I wanted to write a review because everyone either seemed to hate it or love it, which I guess it pretty standard early on in a release, so I wanted to give a more level-headed review for curious people who were debated whether or not to go see it. Keep in mind, I have not read the comic books and my only experience is what others have said and the first movie. Thanks
Writing: Cons: Right off the bat I have to get to the writing because it annoyed me. The first movie was much more even-paced with lots of action but lots of down time as well with Dave becoming Kick-Ass but also his girl problems and the rest of his social/school life and how it was affected. In this movie it seemed like they wanted to have that in there at some point but somewhere in the writing process decided it wasn't worth it and it was all rushed and barely shown. For instance, after Dave decides to become Kick-Ass again his girlfriend, from the last movie, has a total of about 30 seconds on the screen when she 1st. Notices he hasn't been coming to school and then 2. When she thinks he was cheating on her with Mindy and so dumps him with a slap to the face. That's it. Never see her again he never even makes an attempt, that we see, to try to get her back. Apparently he didn't care at all about her after all. A lot of very emotional scenes were rushed through like this and almost no time was given to anything with sometimes too much time given to gags that were funny but didn't need as much time as they did. Part of the reason I think that they gave less time to his alter-ego life was they wanted to spend time showing Mindy's normal life which was a pretty large portion of the film, but once again a lot of it was rushed through. It was better paced and she was given a lot more scenes than Dave but it still felt rushed through putting all of the emphasis on the action scenes and the humor with no connection to the characters from a dramatic or emotional stand-point (especially in death scenes). Disappointing, especially considering the story idea itself was better than that of the first (IMO) Pros: On the up side, the humor and action was primarily good (except for certain moments which I will touch on later) and a long awaited, at least for me, romance briefly appears between Dave and Mindy. This scene, although about the same pace as the others, somehow had a much more natural feel to the speed like it was meant to go too fast. I thought that was done well. Also the writing of the rest of the background characters including all the members of the Justice Forever group were all hilarious all having good dialogue and likable characters who were well developed despite limited screen-time.
Acting: In the acting department all characters seemed fairly believable except, I hate to say it... Mindy a couple of times I think fell flat. She wasn't bad but a couple moments were iffy for me, maybe it was partially due to the bad writing/directing that messed her up a bit, but for the most part the entire cast acted well whether reprising a role or bringing in a brand-new character.
Action/Special Effects: All action sequences were well directed, high energy, and a lot of fun to watch... mostly. Exploding cars and stylized action sequences looked great but 60 to 80 percent of the special effects were oddly bad. Not just like mediocre, like B-Movie bad. It was quite confusing when it would transition from solid Hollywood special effects to B-Movie computer-generated diarrhea (literally). It looked like the movie was an unfinished project or something off of the Syfy channel and it really took away from the movie. I don't know whether the team was rushed or just wasn't very good at all, but I think they should have spent some extra time and money working on those scenes.
Overall the movie was enjoyable, funny, entertaining with likable characters fighting for a good cause, but too many lackluster efforts from the writers, director, and special effects team stopped this movie from being as good as the original source material or the first film. The actors and characters seemed all in to what they were doing but lack of help from the rest of the team left them nowhere to go with even the moral of the story being confusing and changing several times throughout the movie. If the movie had an extra 20-40 minutes of run time to focus on important glossed over plot points and had waited until a December release to work more on the special effects this movie could have been one of the best of the year, but since they didn't it makes it a fun movie that's better the less you pay attention. Go in expecting some laughs and a few cool action sequences (and a kiss shared between Dave and Mindy) but nothing more. Thanks for reading!
I don't get what everyone's complaining about
I really don't... This movie was light-hearted but funny. It had some dirty humor, and it had some clean humor. It had a good cast, and a little bit of bad cast. Over all it was really enjoyable though. The jokes, especially when Jim Carrey was in, were hilarious! I laughed out loud every time he came on! Steve Carell's character was a jerk, but THAT WAS THE POINT! Why doesn't everyone understand we were supposed to dislike him at first? People are making this out to be crap for no reason. The story was simple, but why did it need to be any more complicated? It was fine! Nothing was too simple and nothing was too complicated, it was done close to perfectly. Sure, there were some missed opportunities, but what movie doesn't? This movie was great! Don't listen to the haters and go see it!
