A Few Best Men (2011)
Enjoyable wedding flick
I love Priscilla, so I had some fun with this film as well. I don't understand the bad reviews? The one in the Age tore it to shreds and nearly didn't make me go. Lighten up people, aren't we allowed to make comedies in Australia...
The cast held themselves together very well and the ride was a enjoyable one from start to finish. It does remind me of 'The Hangover', the derivative element from those types of films are apparent. But that's not a bad thing as the comedy works for this era, so why not? Great to see Olivia Newton John back on the big screen again, I'm a huge Grease fan, so I guess I'm being biased :) Xavier Samuel was fantastic as well. Kris Marshall is awesome, his performance was the best of the lot hands down. We all have our favourites, sorry guys!
Snowtown (2011)
Gruesome movie about Snowtown serial killers
This film was very bleak from start to finish. There were moments of its cast connecting and the tone of this connection being positive, but the whole tone of the film underlined that such moments of joy were short lived. Which was a shame as we knew what to expect from the story of the incident anyway. David Henshall and Louise Harris definitely deserved winning the AACTA awards for their respective performance, David was just chilling and Louise gave a lot of heart in her love for her children and it really resonated with me. I still can't believe the cast are all non- actors, I have to say it was very well cast and the performances were real.
The film did make me feel physically sick in the stomach though. I nearly had to walk out. Somebody mentioned it was like Wolf Creek, it was nothing like it as it was less gratuitous in the physical violence. More like the end of Wolf Creek or The Clinic, with that sense of weird eeriness that you got from it. I just didn't enjoy it one bit from that standpoint but I do see the merits of it nonetheless. Just don't expect to come out after feeling all 'sunshine and lollipops', it will stay with you long after.
Dealing with Destiny (2011)
Not great but I still loved it
I remember seeing this at Hoyts Central. My boyfriend and I didn't know what to expect but we enjoyed it, it didn't feel like it was a wasted ticket. If you're wondering, it's a dumb yet fun comedy film. That's about it really. It's not a 'chick flick' but again its not just for guys either. The acting in the film was what made it work for me. The cute Luke Arnold carried the film very well as the leading man. I totally agree with the Filmink review, I really loved the performances by Clayton Moss, Steve Maresca and Catherine Jermanus though. They stood out for me too, the film just wouldn't be what it is without either of them. Catherine brought a strong female presence and intelligence to her likable character, Zara, within the male dominated cast. Clayton's manic character, Lloyd, had the most depth, going from pretentious private school guy to conflicted emotional firecracker to Mr Sensitive. And the character, Ricardo, played by Steve Maresca was just too, too funny. His characters final scene made me cry, it's hilarious but really gross. It's a great debut film for all those actors. I can see them going onto bigger things.
And Gillian Cooper, your last scene rocks girl! Haha :D
Why can't we make more films like this?
