High-quality Shemp short, 30 August 2006

*** This review may contain spoilers ***

I have a copy of this one off an old VHS boot, and I'm glad I do because I'm not sure that this short was ever available commercially. I'm not sure if it airs on Spike TV, either.

Anyhow, this short is a remake of the Curly-era HEALTHY, WEALTHY AND DUMB from 1938. It showcases the contrasting style of the Shemp and Curly eras. Moe is much more ill-tempered and prone to violence in this one. I always appreciated Jules White's tendency toward Moe-based payback, though some purists detested Jules White's violent style. He was a cost-cutter, too, as evidenced by one or two quick shots in this one that are lifted directly from Healthy (i.e., Moe lying under the demolished bed.) Larry is his typical scatterbrain self, and Shemp has his moments where he shines in this one. The systematic demolition of the furniture in the posh hotel still makes me laugh every time I watch it.
