The Informer (2019)
8/10
Underrated Crime Thriller
5 January 2020
The Informer is a tense, gripping crime drama/thriller which keeps you engaged from the very first enthralling scene. A tight screenplay is backed by good performances and some raw action which never goes overboard. Sure, it is far from perfect & original - an undercover informant working with FBI/Cops in crime underbelly has been repeatedly witnessed in cinema. But The Informant holds its own and is a refreshing return to a genre which is fast diminishing. Go for it - you won't be disappointed!

PK (2014)
6/10
Below Expectations
28 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Being a loyal Hirani fan, I was keen to watch PK though trailers were far from impressive. I came out disappointed. Its a feel good movie, easy on eye and ears and reasonably entertaining. But it can be conveniently forgotten the moment show is over. And that tells a story in itself.

First the positives: Solid performance from entire cast, good message, decent script and direction. Technically sound.

Flip side: Lacks originality - basic concept mimics OMG (with lesser impact), it gets repetitive after a while on bashing (primarily) Hindu religious practices, the villain has strong similarities to evil God man from Singham 2, the climax (Indo-Pak aspect) was a let down and over simplified. Unnecessary nudity by Aamir and several references to sex were avoidable - this could have been one true family film. Too much time spent glorifying Aamir's acting abilities. The B&W sarcasm from 3-idiots also makes its way.

After two very honest and straight-from-the-heart Munnabhai ventures, Hirani lost grounds in 3-idiots (even if it was his biggest commercial success). With PK, he get totally ordinary, playing to gallery and roping in every trick to make this a commercial success, which it surely is.

Ugly (2013)
9/10
Brilliant....all the way!
26 December 2014
Ugly is one of the finest works from Anurag Kashyap. It continues to depict what he started with Last Train to Mahakali...and later with Paanch... - his love (and hate) for the dark side of human mind.

Ugly at its heart is a racy thriller, intriguing, loaded with dark humor and real, gray characters, as unpredictable as only humans can be. Technically its brilliant. And its as close as you can get to original in Bollywood world.

It keeps you glued to the screen for 130 min and leaves you numb when the show is over.

P.S. Definitely not for the lovers of Dhoom-3, Kick and P-K genre, who like their cinema light, escapist and with popcorn.
