The Eagle (2011)
Rent or Buy?
I'll rent it. I understand that one of the cute thing the distributors do these days is sell combo packs of both DVD and Blueray together. If you have only one or the other machine then you are being forced to buy a disc you don't need. This can be pricey and it's not right. I don't do Blueray and wanted a copy of this film, but I won't pay the price for the two. Sounds like a rip to me. So don't waste your money on these. Make them sell them separately. It is wrong what they are doing and should be illegal. But greed rules i guess. The employee and the electronics store who told me about this said it is going to be quite common amongst distributors to pull this stunt and she won't buy such packs neither.
Apache Blood (1975)
You heard of B Westerns, this is a Z Western!
This is basically the story of mountain man Hugh Glass worked over and placed later in the later Old West with him becoming a Cavalry scout and the other mountain men becoming cavalry troopers. Watch "Man In The Wilderness" and see the resemblance. Mr. Danton was the only actor in the whole movie while the rest were more than likely hired off the streets. Pass this one by! Low Budget? Yeah. This one must of been made with $1.98! I feel sorry for Mr. Danton as he was a terrific actor and this film was below his standards. The two scriptwriters were actors in this film. One played the scout and the other was the Agarn-looking trooper in the fort at the end of the flick who shot at the scout and Mr. Danton.
Flags of Our Fathers (2006)
An Oscar scoring film if I ever saw one!
This film is nothing short of fantastic. Clint has done it again with his usual style of giving the people what they want. I sincerely hope that this film wins Oscar nods for Best Film, Best Director (Clint Eastwood), Best Actor (Adam Beach), Best Producer, Best Production Artist (Joe Musso), Best Screenplay, and several more that will take up too much time and space. I look forward to seeing the sequel, "Letters from Iwo Jima". Just having Mr.Eastwood at the helm, we know it'll be fantastic and another Oscar winning production. I would of loved working on an Eastwood project if I was still acting. He's an enormous talent and one can learn a lot about the business just by working on a project of his and watching all he does to bring it all together.
The Red, White, and Black (1970)
No a "B Western", but a "Z Western"!
I saw this when it first came out and liked it. Probably because I love westerns and westerns about the cavalry. So when I saw it available on DVD under the title of "The Buffalo Soldiers", I had to have it. When I watched it I couldn't believe that I liked such schlock! Terrible! Saw that it was filmed at the actual Fort Davis in Texas, but that didn't help the lousy script, acting, directing, filming, editing and whatever else there is to rate. The actual Buffalo Soldiers must be rolling in their graves at this one. What an embarrassment. Save your money and bypass this piece of garbage! If you want to see a better movie about these heroes called Buffalo Soldiers, get yourself a copy of Danny Glover's film. Yeah, yeah it ends on a lame note, but it is sure better than this waste of film!
Pirates of Treasure Island (2006)
Pirates of Potboiler Island
Don't even bother with this one. Lance is the only real actor out of this whole movie. It's basically the Treasure Island story but with the worst acting I have ever seen in one movie. Horrible and cheap looking costuming right out of a Party City store. And where did that giant cockroach come from?! I bought a used DVD for a buddy who wants to see it. But I warned him. This has to be one of the worst films ever made. Plus, where did the good looking babes come from? They wouldn't of been there as women aboard ships were considered bad luck. Very rarely did you ever see them. They were no Anne Bonney and Mary Reed! Too bad they can't be charged with "Wasting Celluloid"!
The Alamo (2004)
Total Revisionist Garbage!
If ever a filmed sucked, it's this one! Don't waste your money on the video. It isn't worth it. The DVD has added material which makes it a tad more bearable. If the rumors are right about the director Hancock, then sometime in the first quarter of next year we'll see a Director's Cut come out. I'll rent it first to see if I would want to buy it. I hope that Disney and other filmmakers learn a lesson here. Do not believe what revisionists tell you. They are full of lies and will do anything to destroy our history, our heroes, and the spirit they brought us. This film was purposely anti-war, and anti-hero. It just laid there and never did try to show the spirit of the Alamo. Others films did and you knew it after it was over. You felt it! You felt nothing for this film. My friend overseas who have seen it and love the history of our country and the Alamo, were very upset over this joke of a movie. They hated it with a passion. So, hopefully, the rumored Director's Cut will be coming out. They should of released it that way in the first place.
Cold Mountain (2003)
If folks are going to see a Civil War movie, they'll be very disapointed. Most the movie is of Law trying to get home and the girls working the farm. The battle scenes you see in the trailers is almost all you see in the film. Even most of the folks I know who have seen it were very disapointed and one even walked out. Word is, don't waste your money and wait for the video to come out and rent it. I was hoping for a good Civil War film like everybody else and this was just awful.
