Raising Helen (2004)
Likeable characters, predicatable plot, caution about taking children, as parents die.
This likeable movie has an unfortunately predictable plot, with Joan Cusak sadly miscast as a purse-lipped fuddy-duddy. Kate Hudson glows, but while you root for her to become "Mom" there is never any real dramatic tension. John Corbet plays a confusing hunk-preacher with an absence of real steam. The relationship between him and Helen is fairly superficial. Helen Mirren is dynamite in a very small part as Helen's child-aversive boss. Enjoyable on the whole, but no real contribution to one's understanding of humanity. Caution: I saw a little girl in the ladies room at the end, who looked like she'd been crying, and it occurred to me that as a 6 year old I would have been devastated by a movie where the childrens' parents die at the beginning.
