Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014)
So many people are upset by this film. The ones upset by the almost-all- Caucasian cast. The Christians who wave their fists since they believe that the storytelling is straying from what actually happened in this 'true story'. Then there's my group, the ones who thought it was just shitty film.
I went to see this film expecting an artistic and "mastodontic"(?) take on the fairytale of Moses. I did get a different take of a fairytale but other than that, it didn't entertain me.
A very dull story to begin with, became even duller. All the 'cool' effects of bombardment, that a large portion of the audience was waiting for, failed to materialize before them. At least in any interesting and dramatic way that we were all imagining. And there may have been great actors and actresses in this film but the script/story didn't really allow them to be interesting or believable, just contrived and shallow.
So even though I do not believe that the original fairytale was anything other than a work of fiction, this didn't work for me either. And the almost-all Caucasian cast didn't really make this laughable film any better. It had two enjoyable scenes in it's entirety.
I apologized to my girlfriend for taking her to see this film.
Despicable Me 2 (2013)
Disappointed but entertained
I came into this film with great (but realistic) expectations, 'cause it is after all a sequel. Still this film hit just below the bar I had raised.
First of all, the plot was not as creative and original as the first. Second of all, neither was the dialogue/script. They both lacked depth, proficiency and pioneering. They really had something amazing to build on from the first film and I don't feel that they seized that opportunity.
The jokes weren't as funny, the characters weren't as well written. They just took all the good stuff from the first and added some cheap new characters to complete the cheap plot. And when I say cheap, I just mean they took an easy way out on this one.
And what disappointed me the most was that the emotional depth that blew me away in the first, was gone. All that misery and evil that really made the characters who they were and really made you feel with them, it was just gone.
But it did contain a great amount of laughter. So in the end, you did receive a very entertaining film for the entire family (mostly children on this one), but don't go into this one expecting the copious amount of emotions that you got from the first film. It was the typical automatic sequel.
