Inglourious Basterds (2009)

One of the best movies of the year

Inglourious Basterds is not your typical Tarantino flick. Normally Tarantino does films that are gangster and heist related or sometimes both. With Inglourious Basterds Tarantino takes a different approach using the Second World War as a setting. However, similar to his other films, there are cases where the violence is expressed in a exaggerated and sometimes comedic manner. However, the beginning of the film does express the seriousness of the Holocaust, Nazi Germany and the Second World War in general. Then there is Brad Pitt's character Aldo Raine who adds a bit of comic relief to the film with certain one liners and ridiculous phrases. However, the best performance was by Christoph Waltz who plays Col. Hans Landa. Waltz's performance of Landa was very well done and should not be overlooked when it comes time to pick Oscar nominations in January. There are certain goofs in Inglourious Basterds that are noticeable for example using French in English subtitles however, even masterpieces for example The Godfather contained a number of goofs as well. Inglourious Basterds in my opinion is one of the best movies of 2009 so far. If I was a member of the Academy, I would nominate Inglourious Basterds in six categories.

I am hoping the Academy considers these categories in 2010. In a nutshell I believe Inglourious Basterds is a masterpiece and any fans of war movies and Tarantino flicks should definitely check this out. 10/10

Public Enemies (2009)

Very good. Oscar worthy.

In my opinion, Public Enemies is the best movie of 2009 so far. Johnny Depp's portrayal of John Dillinger was very well done and the film is definitely Oscar worthy. I did not know too much about John Dillinger until I saw this movie but when I did it cleared up a lot of questions I needed answered. I found Public Enemies to be a 1930s version of Heat and another version of the movie Road to Perdition. Aside from the storyline, I will be surprised if the film does not win or is not nominated for an Academy Award for Sound. The sound of the machine gun fire and gunfire in general was very well done and deserves an award or several awards in 2010.

SPOILER: Even though I did not know much about Dillinger until seeing Public Enemies, I found the death scene at the end to be dead on from what I read about him. However, certain flaws I found in Public Enemies were that certain characters were killed after Dillinger in real life while they were killed before him in the movie.

Aside from the flaws, I believe Michael Mann did an excellent job on Public Enemies and I believe it should be nominated for Best Sound, Best Sound Effects Editing, Directing and Picture at the Oscars in 2010.

Revolutionary Road (2008)

Very good and teaches us a little something

I enjoy films that have a hidden lesson. American Beauty had one and so does Sam Mendes' new film Revolutionary Road. This is a very different type of film starring the two main cast members of Titanic. However, this is not a film about Jack and Rose from Titanic and if anything is the complete opposite type of storyline compared to Titanic. The film has a similar type of storyline to American Beauty, only this time it occurs in the 1950s. Based on history classes I have taken in the past, Revolutionary Road's portrayal of life in the 1950s is almost a dead-on match from what I learned. There is the stay at home mother with the working father, where the father is in charge of the household and everyone in it. Leonardo DiCaprio's performance as Frank Wheeler was interesting and most certainly takes a different approach compared to other films he has done. Kate Winslet's portrayal of April was excellent was definitely worthy of the Golden Globe she received. Michael Shannon's acting was terrific and there is definitely some competition for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. As a male this is not normally the type of movie I would see since I generally watch action films and comedies, however any male can learn a lesson from Revolutionary Road when the film is over. Also if you enjoy films by Sam Mendes you will not be disappointed.

The Love Guru (2008)

I don't understand why everyone thinks this movie is bad. I didn't think it was as funny as Austin Powers but since Mike Myers played the Austin Powers role well and that all three movies were such big hits, I think that everyone believes that Mike Myers has to reach that level with every movie he makes. The Love Guru however is somewhat of a different approach in Myers career. The movie is not only about a Guru and the Toronto Maple Leafs, it also has a bit of a romantic storyline from two points of view but I won't ruin it if you intend on seeing it. Verne Troyer also adds to the humour with a number of hilarious acts he performs in the movie. I also found it interesting that Mike Myers was able to use the LA Kings, Toronto Maple Leafs and Hockey Night in Canada in the film. That was one aspect I found to allow like the film even more since I watch hockey on CBC. This film is also viewed as controversial due to the humorous aspects of the Guru. Films like Borat and Passion of the Christ are viewed as controversial and are some of the best films of all time so to give the Love Guru negative reviews due to the controversy involved does not really make sense. The Love Guru has a great storyline and even though it may be a bit far fetched at times, make your own decision and don't just listen to the reviews and the critics.

Under Siege (1992)

One of the best action movies ever made

This is the ultimate action film. Martial arts, cool weapons and it takes place on a battleship. This is also Seagal's best film by far. If you like action, Seagal delivers, however in Under Siege, Seagal probably gives the best performance of his career. Seagal is not the only actor to make this film great. There are also the roles of William Stranix and Commander Krill played by Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey. Both of these actors play the villain roles excellent, especially Tommy Lee Jones. The acting by Jones, allows the insanity of William Stranix to come to life on the screen. Aside from the acting, the effects and stunts are excellent and for action movie lovers, you will not be disappointed. Under Siege is my favorite action film and favorite movie of all time. I give it a 10 out of 10.

Click (2006)

Really good movie!

Click might not be the average Adam Sandler film most of his fans know about however, it is still really good. Click starts off as a normal Adam Sandler comedy and eventually drifts into a serious drama. The serious aspects of the film were one of the major features that made the film good. Other than the seriousness, it still is pretty funny. Even in some of the serious parts of the film Adam Sandler manages to express his humour in some way. Adam Sandler should continue to star in films rather than only produce them. Adam Sandler starring in his films are what make them good. I must say that Kate Beckinsale and Christopher Walken also did a great job in their roles as well. Adam Sandler you should continue to act in your films. You do a great job. I give Click 10 out of 10.

I originally wanted to see this movie in theaters regardless of the reviews. Unfortunately it was not shown in my area. I rented the movie a few days after it was released and from the reviews I heard from critics and other people I know I expected a bad movie. I began to watch the movie and kept an open mind and it turned out to be better than what I expected it to be. The acting by 50 Cent was pretty good for someone who does not act on a regular basis even though 75% of the movie was based on his own life. Being a listener of rap music I now have a new outlook on 50 Cent after seeing this movie even though it was not completely based on his life. I thought the film was well done and at the end of the movie I wondered why the movie was so bad in the eyes of other viewers for it to land in the IMDb bottom 100. For people who have an interest in 50 Cent or the movie in general, keep an open mind and do not take anyone else's word on the movie. Once you watch it then decide if it is bad or good. For me, everyone who did not like this movie will hate me for this. I give "Get Rich or Die Trying" 10 out of 10.

The Ice Harvest (2005)

One of the best movies of the year!

This may not be your typical Christmas movie but Bad Santa with Billy Bob Thornton was not either. However, the Ice Harvest perked my interest more than Bad Santa. It gave me two reactions during the film. I found it funny for one and for the other reaction it made me curious as to what was going to happen next. Since it is a black comedy not all of the jokes are laugh out loud funny but they will make you smirk or make you giggle during the film. I found the scenes with Oliver Platt quite amusing and one scene with Billy Bob Thornton that involves a golf club. This was a different role for John Cusack. I could not have pictured him as a thief in his other films. This film is great though. It involves both action and comedy for people who enjoy a little of both. This may not be your typical holiday movie but check it out. The Ice Harvest is definitely worth your money and is one of best movies of the year in my opinion.

Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)

The best of the new three

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith was an excellent movie, a large number of question that I was wondering for years were finally answered with this movie. This film does take a different approach than the other Star Wars films. For one thing, given the fact that it received a PG-13 rating compared to the other films where they were rated PG, Revenge of the Sth has a darker approach to the plot which makes me understand why they gave the rating they did. The special effects were excellent and the plot and action was as well. The only drawback is we may never get to see another Star Wars film ever again but with respect to that this film was a good one to finish the series with. I really enjoyed the film and I hope it isn't too long until it come to video. Well done George Lucas! I give Revenge of the Sith 10 out of 10.

Gangs of New York (2002)

One of the best movies I have ever seen.

I enjoyed this movie. I did not enjoy it just because of the excessive violence or for it being a gangster movie but I enjoyed it because it had a good plot and the fact that Martin Scorcese decided to take a little bit of a different approach to ways his films are presented. This movie is not about the normal Italian mafia crime families that Scorcese usually presents in his films. Gangs of New York is a true story of battling gangs in 1860s New York city during the civil war. I will not spoil the ending of the film but I will state that if you see this movie. You will be surprised about the ending because I certainly was. Overall it was an excellent movie and it would come somewhere in my top 20 favorite movies of all time. Gangs of New York deserves a 10 out of 10.

The Girl Next Door (2004)

Different but really good.

The Girl Next Door was an excellent movie and not only because Elisha Cuthbert looked really good in it, it was funny and reminded me a little of American Pie. To avoid spoilers please disregard the next paragraph.

The funniest part of the movie in my opinion is the part where Eli is trying to persuade Matthew to take Danielle to a hotel to do "you know what" and how he is literally begging Matthew to do it. But my favorite part is where Matthew is caught spying on Danielle while changing, hee hee.

There are not very many movies that I see in theatres that make me want to buy it on DVD. Even after a week of seeing the movie I am still thinking about it. If I could give higher than 10 I would but since I can not The Girl Next Door receives 10 out of 10.

Senseless (1998)

One of the funniest movies I have ever seen.

This is a typical Marlon Wayans movie. The first time I saw it I was laughing so hard that I almost wet my pants. Marlon Wayans as Daryl Witherspoon is pretty funny though but isn't the only one that is humourous in the movie. Matthew Lillard is funny as well but in a very bizarre way. The funniest part in the movie in my opinion is when Daryl overdoses on the drug can't see what he is doing while playing hockey and ends up standing behind the net instead of in front of it but you can't leave out his outburst during the test.

Senseless was a funny movie and I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good laugh. I give it 10 out of 10.

The Whole Ten Yards (2004)

a nice funny comedy

I found the Whole Ten Yards to be funnier than the original. It wasn't better than the first one but there were more jokes in it. To avoid spoilers please disregard the next paragraph.

The funniest part in my opinion was when Oz runs over Jimmy's chicken and Oz discovers that Jimmy named all of his chickens. But the fake police part can't be forgotton or Lazlo Gololak's pronounciation of words which I found pretty funny. ***********************************************************************

I am still laughing while writing this review. Even though the first one may be a little better with the action and story, the Whole Ten Yards makes up for it with the humour. Even though the Whole Nine Yards is one of my top ten funniest comedies of all time, I must admit that the Whole Ten Yards was funnier. All that said, I give it 10 out of 10

Three Kings (1999)

The best war movie of all time.

This is my all time favorite war movie. It has an incredible cast, good action, a good story and few laughs. There is one drawback to the movie however. The camera techniques in relation to the lighting and the colour are a little weird but the story and the characters make up for that drawback. Everything looks so realistic in the movie as well, the battle scenes, the rescuing of the refugees, etc. After the movie was over I was waiting and waiting and waiting for it to come video to buy and once it did I bought it right away. It is definetely one of my top five movies of all time, right up there with Payback and Under Siege. If I could give a rating higher than 10 for this I would but since it only goes to 10, I give it 10 out of 10.

Malcolm X (1992)

Once you see it, you will understand.

This is an excellent movie. The plot is great and it makes people realize what life was like for Malcolm Turner or "Malcolm X" during the time where racism was high in society. I looked at pictures of the real Malcolm X and Denzel Washington fits the character very well. The film may be long but it needs to be watched closely in order to know the real life story of Malcolm X. To avoid spoilers, disregard the next paragraph.



This movie describes the life of Malcolm X from his childhood, his life or crime, prison, his release, his rise to fame and up to the threats he received and his assassination.





I recommend this movie for anyone who is interested in historical figures but even you are not you may still find it entertaining. I loved it and give it 10 out of 10.

The Hunted (2003)

Awesome

I loved this movie. It has great action suspense and is a really good movie for Tommy Lee Jones. The first time I saw previews for this movie, I thought it was just another thriller. I rented the movie though and loved the action sequences in it. To avoid spoilers omit this next part.

It has everything from jumping off buildings, falling off cliffs into dangerous undertow, jumping onto aerocars, lots of knife action and foot pursuits.

However, there is one drawback to this movie since it can be a little bloody, gruesome and gross at times. Other than that it is a terrific action movie and Tommy Lee Jones delivers as usual. I recommend it for anyone who wants to see a good action flick. I give it 10 out of 10.

The Postman (1997)

This was a great movie and I don't care what anyone else says about it. It has a great story, a great cast of characters and will bring a tear to your eye once the movie is over. You need to really watch the film closely in order to understand it. Kevin Costner played a great character in the movie but the weird thing is that you never know what his name is. Costner is only referred to as "The Postman" or by the General "Shakesphere". It was a good one to watch though. Will Patton played a good role as the general and even Tom Petty's cameo was well done. One drawback for the movie is that it is a little bit long but a great story and cast of characters make up for that. I loved this movie, I give it 10 out of 10.

Gangs of New York (2002)

Scorsese's best.

This film was a little bit gross but it is a great story. It is sort of like an 1860s gangster movie. I have only seen two Daniel Day Lewis films and he looks quite a bit different in Gangs of New York than his other movies. It is a good movie though, if you like Martin Scorsese movies, I recommend it, I give it 10 out of 10.

The Big Bounce (2004)

A real thinker

If you ever want to see this movie, don't watch it unless your head is clear, it's a thinker. After walking out of the theater I finally figured out what happened in the planning process for the heist but I won't spoil it for you. This movie is worth it though, Owen Wilson plays a good role as Jack Ryan so I give it 10 out of 10.

Hollywood Homicide (2003)

Good action

This movie in my opinion is the best movie of 2003. It has just about just about everything in it, action, drama, suspense and plenty of laughs. I was having a bad day when I saw this movie but after I walked out of the theatre, I felt better. Harrison Ford plays a little bit of a different role in this movie. His role as Joe Gavilan is a no nonsense cop who acts really tough in the movie. I strongly recommend this movie though, with it's great action and car chases, it is worth it. I give it 10 out of 10.

Road to Perdition (2002)

Really good flick

This was a good movie, sad though. It was a different role for Tom Hanks though, I have never seen him play a gangster before but he did a really good job in the movie. Paul Newman played a good role as Mr. Rooney as well and he should have won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor but you can't win them all. Good story though, I give it 10 out of 10.

Ronin (1998)

One of my top 5

This is an awesome movie,lots of action, great plot and probably Robert DeNiro's best movie. I wanted to buy this movie so bad that I looked everywhere for it and did not stop until I found it. It is a different type of film for Robert DeNiro though, he doesn't normally do action films but he did a really good job in this one. Jean Reno as always plays a really good action star in this movie for his role as Vincent. All of the actors in this film played really good roles, Sean Bean as Spence, Natascha McElhone as Deidre and the best villain was Jonathan Pryce as Seamus O'Rourke. If you are looking for lots of action and great car chases, I strongly recommend this movie, I give it 10 out of 10.

The Whole Nine Yards (2000)

One of the funniest movies I have ever seen.

It's weird seeing Bruce Willis in a comedy but he does a really good job in it though. Most of the jokes come from Matthew Perry who plays Oz though. The jokes are done mostly by him being nervous in the movie but I won't spoil it for you. I had a really good laugh, I give it 10 out of 10.

Bruce Almighty (2003)

Pretty goofy

It would be fun to be god for a week but hard work too and this film proves it. There was a good cast that was picked for this movie but Jim Carrey was the best of all of them. I loved what Bruce did to Eban Baxter when he became god, that was pretty funny. I give it 10 out of 10.

Me, Myself & Irene (2000)

One of Jim Carrey's funniest

It is pretty obvious that the Farrelly Brothers directed this movie. I couldn't stop laughing. I laughed right from the beginning to the end just before the credits hit. One of the funniest things in the movie were Charlie's (Jim Carrey) children. They were so big, you could hardly see Charlie sitting on the couch with them. If you haven't seen this movie and want to, look for a few hidden things in it but I won't tell you so I don't spoil the movie. I had a good laugh 10 out of 10.
