I thought this film was dreadful. I was optimistic due to a strong cast being involved. However, as is typical nowadays, get a Hoffman or De Niro, and in most other films Hackman to bail the film out.Who said Brad Pitt could act? The film didn't establish the necessary sympathy required for the characters and their dilemma. Too much nowadays it is considered quaint and romantic, and in this case, for the young to bully the local immigrant hot-dog seller and nearly kill an innocent man in the ensuing frivolity. Ending up in 'borstal' quite deservedly just made me accept their time in there was going to be awful to say the least. Why would it be anything else? Unlike the 'Shawshank Redemption' where you cared for all the characters, I didn't give a hoot to what happened to these boys, and I am sorry to say that. I felt more sorry for the character Kevin Bacon played. What in hell's name was he doing in a film like this? And poor Dustin Hoffman doesn't need work of this poor standard. Minnie Driver playing a social worker making remarks about her siblings like,'aren't you two shooting someone tonight' just about sums it all up for me. There was no humanity or sensitivity in this at all in my opinion. A poor copy off the likes of Casino and Good Fellas but without real and believable characters and a silly courtroom scenario to complicate the film unnecessarily. I came away wishing I'd never spent my money purchasing this DVD and will willingly pass it on to anyone who wants it.

I often wonder why this series was slammed so much. I thought it was brilliant and also very cleverly written and performed. I think in time to come it will be seen in the light it deserves, that is if they ever issue it. Many up and coming young comedy actors appeared in this and all went on to greater things. Maybe this fact will make people aware of its value and it will have to be issued. Sally Phillips, Simon Pegg, Peter Serafinowicz and not least Julian Rhind-Tutt of the hugely successful Green Wing. The writers Graham Linehan and Arthur Matthews are two of the finest comedy writers of the modern age. Anyone that can produce comedy like Father Ted couldn't be capable of writing something not worthy of publication. If it is ever issued I will certainly buy it.

About Schmidt (2002)

Wonderful film

On the DVD box, "hilarious" "a very funny movie". This was not the film I watched, I don't know what mentality these reviewers have, but certainly not the same as mine. I found this to be a wonderful film about a man who retires and whose plans are scuppered when his wife dies suddenly. His journey of self discovery and his concern over the marriage of his daughter to someone totally unsuitable. It shows that no matter how unremarkable life can be at times, this itself is remarkable. Nicholson's performance is stunning, as is Kathy Bates, and Dermot Mulroney as the future son in law is a joy to watch. I must make a special mention about the cinematography (James Glennon) which is as stunning as it is simple, just pay attention to it when you watch the film.

A gem of a movie

This is a wonderful film, beautifully, filmed, acted and directed. Just buy it, and you will have a film that you can watch time and time again. A story mixing comedy, tragedy, and insight, not letting each take anything away from the other. One of the best films I have seen in a long time.
