I've been watching horror films since I was a kid and I don't scary easy (I did when I was a kid). I must say that there has not been an excellent horror film in many years, and many of these films on this list were not scary to me, but they are original and well made.
For me above all other things a horror movie must be creepy, if the hair on the back of neck stands up and I get goosebumps, the movie has me. But the film also must have an original story, good direction, cinematography and acting good atmosphere. Sense of humor is fine too, but not necessary.
I don't care for slasher movies, I think they are lame and asinine, and there has not been good slasher movie in over 30 years.
I don't like excessive gore, don't get me wrong, a film can be bloody, but If i think the gore is excessive and unnecessary to the story, I will count it against the film. Unfortunately most modern film makers rely too much on gore to shock their viewers. It adds nothing to film and often distracts from the story.
Another aspect of modern horror films I find abhorrent is the obsession with sadism within films. I cannot fathom why this appeals to modern film makers and audiences.
With that being said, one can see why many of the more popular horror movies of the last 25 years are missing from the list.
