A violent story of Obsession and Revenge
21 September 2014
THE STORY:

Two very different men, one wronged by family and the other by society share a fierce, bleak and furious pursuit through the harsh Australian outback to recover a stolen car and a brother lost.

TOP PERFORMANCES:

1. Guy Pearce. His sullen, silent and intensely masculine portrait of Eric, an isolated man of few words who is violently murderous is outstanding.

2. Robert Pattinson. His sensitive and intelligent characterisation of the intellectually challenged and street-smart Rey is emotionally engaging and haunting.

THREE THINGS WE LIKED:

The tense body language of the brooding Eric that betrays his inner pain

The childlike humanity and loyalty of loose cannon Rey, who just wants to be loved

The dusty, dry vision of a vicious Australia that is both endless and nowhere

THREE WORDS:

Unflinching Outback Violence

What appears to be wrong could be right
14 September 2014
THE STORY:

The duplicity of right and wrong is highlighted in this moody psychological police drama when an accident evokes conflicting responses from each of the people concerned.

TOP THREE PERFORMANCES:

1. Tom Wilkinson. His old-school senior detective is charismatic, convincing, and always endearing despite his questionable ethics.

2. Joel Edgerton. His confused and arrogant cop is compelling in his failing efforts to do what he knows is right.

3. Melissa George. Her empathetic and emotional mother shines in her primary motivation to protect her family.

THREE THINGS WE LIKED:

The intriguing plot that transformed all the players - The intense and lengthy stillness of the close ups - The simple and muted palette of Grey, blue & black

THREE WORDS: A Human Story
