PKiM, this started out as a British list, but has evolved into an international list... [list may include series considered in the "British Mystery" genre, but not actually a "British" Mystery production]

Thank you kindly for the comments/suggestions Edward, Irene, Louise, Sandra, Chardon, Carina, Susan, Dz, Helen, spcelaai13, & narwagner...

Edward, thanks for sharing the many wonderful Acorn offerings.

Louise, I do as well; JT/IM hooked me on mysteries.

Sandra, looks like there is a Series 3 in the making for 2016; can't wait! [UPDATE: Series 3 has started Jan 2016!]

Susan, I LOVE every Marple, going back to MR [my second fave]! Though GM is my fave, I only listed the GM Marple because it's the only one listed on IMDB as a 'TV Series' [with series/season and episode format]. The others are listed in my 'Great Mystery Films...' list. Also, with two more endorsements for 'Scott & Bailey', I will be looking it up very soon! Thanks again, Susan, and Carina.

Chardon, I've added those titles to the 'British Mystery Series' list; thanks.

Dz, I was unaware of "Scott & Bailey" and have added it to my other, longer "British Mystery Series" list. Looking forward to checking it out soon; thanks.

Spq, I'm going to have to assume you mean "Case Histories", not "Case History"? I've never seen 'CH', so it's not on this list; however, it is on a more comprehensive 'Mystery' list. The ratings look good and the reviews somewhat ok...

[NF=NtFlx]; Thanks, narwagner.

[sarcasm] WARNING: Please be advised, if you are easily disappointed by IMDB lists, and you continue reading below, you do so at your own risk (unofficially dubbed, "The 'Anna A./P.P.' Warning"). [/sarcasm]

Thank you for the great comments, Mir, Simon, Jason, Yana, Splatter, Aji, Chris Bct, Yvette, Chris SK, Manish, Terri, Liarnie, Julia, Kyuketsuki, and Evelyne!

Evelyne B, thank you for the intro to your CulturEatz.com; it's a thoroughly delectable site.

Kyuketsuki, I've added 'Food Wars' based on your suggestion and look forward to opportunities to view it!

Mir Mayo, although many of your suggestions were already included on the list, you had some very intriguing suggestions that were not: "Stanley Ka Dabba", "Queen", "Tsukiji uogashi sandaime", "Mildred Pierce", and "Mistura", among others...thank you!

Jason, Splatter & Aji, thanks for the suggestions; I look forward to finding and viewing each of those films!

Jason, thank you for sharing your film 'Trattoria' [2012]; I particularly look forward to experiencing this film. Any chance for a Ntflx listing?

Simon, I don't recall that film, but it does sound like something I should've seen/should see; if it comes up, I'll be sure to post! Any additional details would be helpful [was it an English language film?, made in US/UK?, etc.]...one possibility is, "The Linguini Incident" [1991], w/Marlee Matlin?

Yana, 'SK' is currently at #206; thanks.

Manish, yes, apart from KB, #15's '9 1/2 Weeks' does have a little something to do with food...! ;) Additionally, it also had a prequel and sequel produced.

Yvette, 'Hundred Foot Journey' IS a wonderful film; I'm surprised you didn't see it listed at #35?...

Chris Bct, could you be speaking of #46's 'Woman on Top' with Penelope Cruz...?

Thank you for the kind comments, Alan, Saff, Gary, Linda, Aria, Harsh, Michael-Scott, & Lori.

Gary, I'm grateful for your suggestion of 'George & Mildred'; watched some on YTb and absolutely love it! As for 'Robin's Nest', it was already in my list of 'British Comedies', but not 'Best of'. I'd never heard of 'Return of Shelly' and could not easily find any samples/previews online, but have added it to my list of 'British Comedies'...

Linda, thank you for your reminder about 'Waiting for God', it is wonderful; I tend to prefer the earlier episodes over the later, but it is always enjoyable!

Aria, thanks, 'Red Dwarf' is a guilty pleasure...

Harsh, I've never had the pleasure of watching 'Inbetweeners'; will give it a go soon, thanks!

Thanks, Michael-Scott; I bet you're referring to 'A Bit of Fry and Laurie'? It's included in my list of 'British Comedies'. I've enjoyed what little I've caught of this, and am a big fan of Stephen's and Hugh's other works [particularly 'Jeeves and Wooster' & 'Black Adder Goes Forth'].

Lori, Thanks for a great list of Britcoms! I've enjoyed some of these [particularly 'Outnumbered'] and they are all included in my "British Comedy TV Series / Britcoms" list, but not in my "Best of..." list.

Paul, I've added both versions of 'TF' [1980 & 2005]; love 'em both!

I've not watched every zombie film out there, but I've watched many; these first 25 listed here are ones I'll gladly watch again, and again.

I'm not a purist when it comes to zombie film watching; I figure, if one of these mo-fo's wanted to chomp on me, and I didnt have the time/means to determine whether it had been supernaturally reanimated or virally infected, as it was on its way, I'm at the very least thinking it's "zombie-like", if not a "zombie"...I'm guessing, not too many people would be able to tell the difference before it's too late anyways.

Some that can make the cut if I had made this list on a different day, include: 'Dead Alive', original 'Dawn of the Dead', '28 Weeks Later', 'Cemetery Man', 'Pontypool', 'Reanimator', 'Army of Darkness', 'Jigoku Kôshien/Battlefied Baseball', 'Pet Semetary', 'White Zombie' & 'Night of the Comet'...

Thank you for the comments, Richard Zuker, Cheryl LeighVitello, Paul Gandy, and Julie Brown!

JB, I hope you get to enjoy at least a few of these you haven't seen... 'Kill Zombie!/Zombibi' sounds like my kind of Zombie movie; thanks for the suggestion! It's currently streaming on Ntflx [as of 01/17]... Update: it was a whole lotta cheesy fun and well done; thanks again!!!

PG, Hope you get to enjoy some that you haven't yet seen including 'TtB'!

CLV, I greatly appreciate the suggestion for 'Wasting Away/Ahhh! Zombies!!' I can't easily explain why I've not seen it up until now; while I get that the cover art is cute/clever, it's been a bit off-putting [for a zombie film]. In any case, it's now at the top of my Ntflx Q... Now, if you haven't seen it already, please give 'Train to Busan/Busanhaeng' a viewing!

RZ, I like the new "Crazies" [2010] better than the original, but I do love the original, the new one just doesn't crack my Top 10 [only the first ten on this list are actually ranked, the rest are listed in no particular order (as I said below!)]; where would you rank it?

Most relate to Mexico-US border, but some Canada-US border related as well.

Not available here for this list is "The Border Film Project" [please do an internet search]; provides dynamic pictorial perspectives...

Also consider searching for "Animas Perdidas", or "Lost Souls", depicting two brothers, both U.S. military veterans, raised in the U.S. since childhood, whom are deported from the only country they knew, and subsequently abandoned by their country, and their former brothers-in-arms, only to suffer tragic consequences...

My favorite horror films, including mixed genre with classic, comedy, suspense, action, fantasy, mystery, action, adventure, drama, thriller, crime, western, history, etc. ...

I watch a lot of horror and love a good fright, but I've got a special place for horror comedies, or horror with even a little humor mixed in; a film with frights and humor compares to a thrilling, sensory roller coaster ride...

First, I would like to point out that I'm deeply saddened by the events that have made this genre [WWII] possible...

I consider these the best films of the genre that I've experienced [and not a list of favorites, which would vary considerably]. Selected for varying attributes and without regard to genre [action, drama, comedy...], budget, or cast/crew. Some of these films will thrill you, others may make you cry or laugh, while all invariably weave an incredible narrative.

These films aren't going to be side-splitting for everyone, but they're fun [mostly subtle humor], and with just a dose of drama that weaves a great narrative as well; they're not all British [most are], but essentially in that vein...pour a cup of hot tea, a good pint, or two fingers of your favorite spirit, and enjoy!

[focus is on post 1980- films; top ten are generally my faves in no particular order, the rest are in no particular order at this time]

a list of 660 titles
660 ranked "IMDB 250" Films [1996–2014]; this list objectively ranks all films that have been included in an "IMDB 250" ranking, from 1996–2014 [using an expanded formula 'based on IMDB's formula for calculating the Top Rated 250 Titles that provides a true Bayesian estimate' that essentially focuses on year-to-year rankings].

2014 saw a whopping 11 new [and a couple not so new!] films join the All-time 'IMDb 250'. Only 1997 [12] and 1999 [24] have debuted more films since the initial 250 of 1996.

Some observations and thoughts...

In the All-time Top 5, status quo...

In the All-time Top 10, 'One Flew Over...' [8] overtook 'Casablanca' [9], and 'Pulp Fiction' [10] nudged out 'Inception' [11].

In the All-time Top 25, room had to be made for 'Interstellar', debuting at 15, which means most films under it had to fall, with the notable exceptions of '12 Angry Men' [16], 'Two Towers' [20], and 'The Good, the Bad & the Ugly' [21] which rose 1 spot each [keep in mind this is for '1996-2014', not just '2014'!], and ultimately dropping 'Pycho' out of the Top 25 at 26.

Of note in the All-time Top 50, 'City of God' & 'Taxi Driver' climbed three spots to 34 & 38 respectively, 'Amelie' & 'Third Man' fell three spots to 35 & 49 respectively, with 'Alien' dropping one spot and falling out of the Top 50 at 51 [incidentally, 'Aliens' improved one spot to 65].

Of note in the All-time Top 100, 'Raging Bull' had a five spot drop to 67, 'Maltese Falcon' had a nine spot drop to 72, 'Wizard of Oz' fell eight spots to 90, 'Fargo' dropped seven spots to 91, & 'Touch of Evil' with the largest drop, by ten spots to 97 [with the exception of 'Gravity', which debuted in 2013 at 89, but fell completely out of the Top 250 in 2014!]. Falling out of the Top 100 were 'Pan's Labyrinth', falling five spots to 101, and 'Downfall' falling six spots to 103. 'The Green Mile' rose six spots to 85, 'City Lights' rose five spots to 94, 'Forrest Gump' improved six spots to 92, and 'The Great Dictator' joined the Top 100 at 99 by moving up two spots.

Of the 2014 predictions [see below] for films to improve, 9 of 11 proved accurate, with only 'Paths of Glory' holding steady at 57, and 'The Shining' dropping one spot to 77. Notable is the +65 spots of improvement by 'Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind' at 471.

Of the 2014 predictions [see below] for films to fall, 11 of 11 proved accurate, with 'District 9' making the biggest fall, dropping 14 spots to 198. Also of note, was the correct prediction of 'Pulp Fiction' overtaking 'Inception' in the overall rankings...

11 films appearing to improve with age [2014]:
'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' [21, +1]
'Once Upon a Time in the West' [41, +1]
'Paths of Glory' [57, 0]
'Modern Times' [68, +4]
'The Shining' [77, -1]
'Forest Gump' [92, +6]
'City Lights' [94, +5]
'The Great Dictator' [99, +3]
'Oldboy' [117, +2]
'Back to the Future' [125, +3]
'Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind' [471, +65]

11 films beginning to lose their luster [2014]:
'Maltese Falcon' [72, -9]
'Blade Runner' [84, -4]
'Wizard of Oz' [90, -8]
'Fargo' [91, -7]
'Sin City' [110, -7]
'The Six Sense' [109, -4]
'Manchurian Candidate' [120, -8]
'No Country for Old Men' [119, -8]
'Jaws' [118, -5]
'The Graduate' [140, -8]
'District 9' [198, -14]

Other notable jumps include: 'Green Mile' [85, +6], 'City Lights' [94, +5], 'Forrest Gump' [92, +6], 'Intouchables' [102, +18], 'Django Unchained' [121, +34], 'How to Train Your Dragon' [171, +6], 'Snatch.' [183, +7], 'The Hunt'/'Jagten' [176, +33], 'Secret in Their Eyes' [178, +10], 'For a Few Dollars More' [194, +10], 'Big Lebowski' [202, +8], 'Grave of the Fireflies' [211, +11], 'Lion King' [206, +17], 'Mary and Max' [226, +8], 'Scarface' [238, +9], 'Like Stars On Earth' [246, +34], '3 Idiots' [260, +70], 'The Kid (1921)', [263, +13], 'Judgement at Nuremberg' [266, +7], 'Casino' [275, +10], 'Howl's Moving Castle' [292, +31], 'Incendies' [297, +88], 'My Neighbor Totoro' [299, +33], 'A Beautiful Mind' [313, +32], 'Rang De Basanti' [319, +80], 'Hachi: A Dog's Tale' [351, +105], 'Persona' [352, +15], 'Infernal Affairs' [358, +23], 'Ip Man' [360, +24], 'Shutter Island' [365, +88], 'Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind' [471, +65], 'Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India' [514, +46], 'Memories of Murder' [526, +24], 'The Help' [535, +98], & 'Jurassic Park' [614, +18].

Other notable slumps include: 'Maltese Falcon' [72, -9], 'Touch of Evil' [97, -10], 'Slumdog Millionaire' [155, -12], 'Black Swan' [166, -21], 'Avengers' [172, -16], 'Gravity' [177, -88], 'Incredibles' [185, -12], 'Wrestler' [195, -13], 'District 9' [198, -14], 'King's Speech' [200, -9], 'Avatar' [201, -16], 'Ratatouille' [203, -12], 'Kill Bill: Vol.2' [215, -14], 'Young Frankenstein' [217, -10], 'Three Colors: Red' [216, -10], 'Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' [242, -46], 'Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug' [249, -79], 'Star Trek (2009)' [251, -22], 'Mystic River' [253, -14], 'His Girl Friday' [254, -11], 'Beauty and the Beast' [255, -10], 'Nosferatu' [256, -12], 'The Killer' [257, -11], 'Le Grande Illusion' [258, -10], 'Fugitive' [262, -13], 'Clerks' [264, -12], 'Ed Wood' [265, -11], 'Harvey' [269, -13], 'Big Fish' [270, -15], 'Battleship Potemkin' [271, -13], 'Curious Case of Benjamin Button' [273, -23], 'Rain Man' [274, -14], '...Liberty Valence' [276, -13], 'Children of Men' [277, -20], 'All About My Mother' [278, -14], ''Kind Hearts & Coronets' [280, -13], 'Fantasia' [281, -12], 'Diving Bell & The Butterfly' [289, -21], 'Argo' [334, -47], 'Before Midnight' [393, -91], 'Let the Right One In' [328, -21], 'Perks of Being a Wallflower' [373, -50], 'Artist' [362, -37], 'Prisoners' [401, -64], 'Hugo' [383, -46], 'Milk' [397, -25], 'True Grit (2010)' [409, -34], & 'Elite Squad: The Enemy Within' [518, -37].

Additionally in 2014, 'Before Sunset' made a return to the yearly Top 250 after a seven year absence at 250, and thereby reducing its annual slide by only 13 spots [296].

And, as mentioned previously, three films saw their first yearly Top 250 action after missing the cut in previous years: 2012's 'Gangs of Wasseypur', debuting at 196 in 2014, and 339 all-time; 2004's 'Swades: We the People', debuting at 239 in 2014, and 615 all-time; and, even more impressively, 2001's 'Do Your Thing', debuting at 165 in 2014, and 485 overall.

'Interstellar'['s] debut at 15 is also impressive, but not as much so as '...Fellowship of the Rings' debut at 1 in 2001, 'American Beauty'['s] debut at 2 in 1999, '...Return of the King'['s] debut at 4 in 2003, 'Dark Knight'['s] debut at 4 in 2008, 'Inception'['s] debut at 6 in 2010, or '...Two Towers' debut at 11 in 2002.

The highest rated all-time 'IMDb 250' film to miss the cut in 2014 is 'Manchurian Candidate' [120]. 'Big Sleep' [142] & 'Hustler' [204] appear poised to compete to do the same in 2015... Other notables to have done the same over the years include: 'Duck Soup', 'African Queen', 'Crouching Tiger...', 'Glory', 'Slumdog Millionaire' [155; also in 2014], 'Black Swan', 'Run, Lola, Run', & 'Toy Story 2'...

Years 1994 & 1999 placed the most films in the Top 100 All-time, with 4 each; 1950, 1957, 1980, 1995, 2001, 2002, & 2006 all placed 3 each in the Top 100 All-time...

The oldest film to place on the 'IMDb 250' is 1920's 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari'...

The only year since 1920 to not place a film in the 'IMDb 250' is 1932...

Years 1993-1999 all rank as years with the most films placed in the 'IMDb 250'; '93 [20], '94 [18], '95 [28], '97 [19], '98 [21], '99 [21]; however, the year to place the most films on the 'IMDb 250' is [not surprisingly] 1996 [31], the seminal year for the 'IMDb 250' list...

Also not surprisingly, 2014 is the year with the most films [6] that have been voted in the 'IMDb 250' every eligible year [they're new, so couldn't have missed any other year, yet]; however, 1999 has five such films ['Fight Club', 'Matrix', 'American Beauty', Green Mile', & 'Sixth Sense'], and 1994 & 1995 each have four such films [27 years, from 1920-1970, have none]...

PREDICTIONS FOR 2015:
Likely to rise:
'Pulp Fiction', '...Two Towers', 'Goodfellas', 'Matrix', 'Green Mile' [85, +6], 'Star Wars: Episode VI...', 'Intouchables' [102, +18], 'The Hunt'/'Jagten' [176, +33], 'For a Few Dollars More' [194, +10], 'Grave of the Fireflies' [211, +11], 'Lion King' [206, +17], 'Like Stars On Earth' [246, +34], '3 Idiots' [260, +70], 'Howl's Moving Castle' [292, +31], 'Incendies' [297, +88], 'My Neighbor Totoro' [299, +33], 'A Beautiful Mind' [313, +32], 'Rang De Basanti' [319, +80], 'Hachi: A Dog's Tale' [351, +105], 'Infernal Affairs' [358, +23], 'Ip Man' [360, +24], 'Shutter Island' [365, +88], 'Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind' [471, +65], 'Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India' [514, +46], 'The Help' [535, +98].

Likely to fall:
'Casablanca', 'Dr. Strangelove...', 'Citizen Kane', 'Psycho', 'Maltese Falcon' [72, -9], 'Inglorious Basterds', 'Ran', 'Touch of Evil' [97, -10], 'Black Swan' [166, -21], 'Gravity' [177, -88], 'Wrestler' [195, -13], 'District 9' [198, -14], 'Avatar' [201, -16], 'Kill Bill: Vol.2' [215, -14], 'Star Trek (2009)' [251, -22], 'Curious Case of Benjamin Button' [273, -23], 'Argo' [334, -47], 'Before Midnight' [393, -91], 'Perks of Being a Wallflower' [373, -50], 'Artist' [362, -37], 'Prisoners' [401, -64], 'Hugo' [383, -46], 'Milk' [397, -25], 'True Grit (2010)' [409, -34], & 'Elite Squad: The Enemy Within' [518, -37].
