A time before bad movies were sent straight to Netflix
Alright, I've been putting off this review just because this movie is just so damn bad. Before I watched this movie I thought "I like action movies, and destruction movies. Also the cast is decent." So already I wasn't expecting much but what I got was enough to start a real apocalypse.
The movie starts off alright, not great, not even good. In fact it starts out like every other destruction movie ever made. I thought that was fine, there's not many ways to start a movie like this. But come to find out that the entire movie follows the same formula. That formula, if you haven't guessed, is "what did another apocalypse movie do? Oh okay lets do that." The fact is, this movie has absolutely nothing new to bring to the table AT ALL. It takes every little trope from every other action movie ever made. There is literally no new content here at all.
So after the copy and paste plot, action scenes, and tropes, I start wondering why this movie was ever made. And it is simply to cash in on the popular 2012 theme going on right now and nothing else. This is one of those movies that i'd like to punch the writers in the face for making it. Not only is the entire movie predictable, but it's just stupid. I know John Cusack can act but he doesn't seem to care enough anymore. Probably because he knew how bad this movie was but realized he hasn't been in anything in a while and needed to stay relevant.
The ONLY 2 reason this movie doesn't have a perfectly bad score of a 1 is because frankly Netflix exists and the level of awful for movies has been taken to new heights. Secondly I was kind of entertained enough to keep watching even if it was just because I was thinking "So what trope are they going to use next... oh that one, okay." Also I like watching people die.
Sorry, I just don't get it
I've heard some good stuff about this film recently so I decided to watch it and see what is was about. Unfortunately I just don't get why this movie is so praised.
my main problem with this film is how long it takes to figure out the plot. The movie starts off well but falls apart because the majority of the film is spent saying "what the hell is going on" and not in a good suspense movie way but in a way that drags questions out for the hell of it. Not only that but in between all the dragging out it introduces scenes that have absolutely no relevance to the movie what so ever.
Another complaint is everybody's accent. I know its mean but i really hate everybody's accent to the point that I really just wanted to turn the movie off. And why the hell is everybody so happy in this movie? It deals with murder and conspiracies but everyone has a damn smile on there face, even the people getting crapped on the entire film. Even the ending isn't satisfying.
After all this though I cannot give the movie a perfectly bad score because Peter Stormare's performance, while subtle, is amazing as well as the concept of the film being original.
State of Emergency (2011)
State of original
With apocalypse movies on the rise and the media being over saturated with movies of this kind, a lot of movies have plots and tropes that get spread over all of them. Luckily this movie does NOT share that in common.
I had this movie playing in the background while doing some chores until a scene really interested me. So I quickly reminded, sat down and watched the whole movie. That's when I realized that even gems can be found on netflix and not just stupid background movies. This movie takes all these apocalypse and zombie tropes and throws them away for a better, calmer, and nicer script.
As I said, the movie is slower, but it goes for a more psychological and more realistic view on what people would do in a State of Emergency. I honestly extremely enjoyed this movie just for being different, but it goes beyond that. The cast is likable and while there's not a lot of talking in the beginning of the film, it makes sense and character development as well as story development is displayed very well in other ways. It's rare for the acting to dip as the characters are very well wrote and casted. This movie is good enough that I'd buy it. This movie is better then most of the crap that has made it to theaters recently. I usually don't like slower paced movies but this one keeps you interested even if it is at a slower moment.
So in the end the movie is free on streaming, it's original, it's not full of tropes, and it's amazing! How can you go wrong?
District 9 (2009)
Wow. It's movie is just bloody awful. I was very interested in seeing this after hearing good things but not knowing really what to expect. I knew it was a sci FI movie so I was excited at the least. Well if I hadn't of gone with someone else I would've just walked out after an hour of this movie. I recently watched it again to see if its as bad as I remember and it's even worse.
To begin with the characters suck. The main character is suppose to have a gift of some sort, be different but in this movie the main character is just a big pussy. It's very hard to watch because the main characters role is just so bad. All the aliens speak their own language but can understand English. All the humans can understand the alien language but speak English. If everyone understands the same language why don't they just speak it throughout the movie?! Also the "love" between the man and his wife is badly construed. I didn't even know they like each other till half way threw the film and she still doesn't seem to like him much till even later.
The directing is horrible as shots are too shaky, too many close ups, and the documentary style filming is over used and really boring in this film.
The plot is terrible. Well I mean all 4 of the plots are because there's a million things going on a once and non of witch make any sense. Most websites say that the plot is this man has half alien DNA and can operate alien weapons so the military tries hunting him down for this very reason. It's hard to see this as the plot considering it doesn't it doesn't come in till 45 MINUTES INTO THE MOVIE! The absolute dumbest plot element has to be that the aliens gasoline can turn things into aliens. Think about that. Their gasoline TURNS PEOPLE INTO GASOLINE. Not only does it power their space ships but it has magically the absolute perfect biology to turn human DNA into alien. They're aliens, not viruses and even for a SCI FI movie, this is poorly thought out and unbelievable. Something else that's stupid is that all the humans want is to get rid of the aliens and send them back to the mother ship. As it turns out the only thing the aliens want is to get back to the mother ship so it can be fixed. It seems however that the writer forgot about this fact as the humans go threw great length to "evict" the aliens which somehow have human rights now. If everyone hates everyone why don't the humans just take the aliens back to the mother-ship and be rid of them? Then there would be no point to this horrible movie. There are so many plot wholes and too many things don't make sense. I wonder when they threw the plot together if they actually thought about or were crushed for time so just said "F this" and moved on.
It's a shame that it was so poorly thought out and produced because there's something here that old have been great. The last 30 minutes are good but it's not enough to save the rest of the film.
In short this movie is absolutely horrible. Utter trash. There's something good hidden in the film but its surrounded by horrible characterization, bad plot, and other bad ideas. I could rant for hours about how bad this film is and all the things that don't make sense but it just comes down to skip this film and its a shame that is wasn't thought out well.
