The Producers (2005)
As bad as I feared, possibly worse
No, I didn't see the Broadway production, but the original movie is such a treasure in every single way I felt almost protective of it. Then I happened to see the stage version of "Hairspray" and loved it as much as the original movie, so I thought, well, maybe a chance. Not a laugh. Matthew Broderick has no idea what's going on. Gene Wilder's Leo you rooted for, this was never the case with Broderick. The movie seemed rushed... and dragged... at the same time. Expanding the song "Springtime for Hitler" was pointless. None of the newer songs were memorable (OK, maybe Uma Thurman's "If You Got It, Flaunt It" though I don't remember a single other line from it, so maybe it wasn't quite THAT memorable.) And somehow, through this mess, Wil Farrell continues his track record of making me fall into the "Oh, no, not HIM again... why did I like him so much on SNL?"
