Escape Some History
It has been a long time since I watched a series that involved ships and swords. It is very refreshing to get away from modern guns, cities, hotels, mansions and motored vehicles. It is not the type of show I expected but I'm find with it. The whole pirates thing has been done already and lets face it Jack Sparrow owns the stage. Look at how well Pirates of the Caribbean is doing. I don't see many complaining about history. Throw some real historic names and all of a sudden the history teachers are giving out 2-3 star ratings.
The pirates are not the bad guys in this which is a nice change. I think the series has shown an Englishman to torture more people than any pirates have in the show. That is fine by me. It is trying to do something different, almost from a pirates point of view. That is a great thing about drama. We can fill the blanks in however ever we want and only the nerds will complain.
Personally pirates are one area of history I don't think the human race needs to remember and I do not mind this series being none factual. If you want facts do not watch this. If you want dirty, nasty pirates as told by a bias side sometime way back then do not watch this. I don't mind the pirates being a bit clean and hardly giving Jack Sparrow a run for his money. But that comes back to the point that the show is suggesting that pirates actually had two eyes, two hands and no gold teeth.
If you want facts this is not your show, go watch the History channel. People who review as if they expect a documentary should stick to watching documentaries and not dramas. They always write such smart sentences with a touch of humor. Neglecting the common sense of TV genres matter and have purpose.
Dracula For This Generation
I just discovered that I cannot stand reviews based on a comparison of an original work. It makes no sense to expect anything made generations ago to work now and that is why this Dracula had to be different. This Dracula works for today's work. This Dracula is easy watching and the original story quickly tells us not to expect the same sort of horror. It's all revenge, calculation and some of that sexual chemistry connected to violence going on in there somewhere.
There was no point in relying on blood and gore or trying making the audience jump. Not when considering what this generation has seen on TV since the original. The producer isn't trying to fool anyone with creeks and bumps in the shadows. When Dracula appears in this series with fangs out. His actions usually have purpose and connected to a longer story- line than we are used to when it comes to Dracula. The idea was worth exploring because we now actually have something that is a bit more realistic and that is refreshing. A Dracula who can't just go around sucking blood...all the time. But one that runs a business to fit into the world so that he may achieve his goals. Is that not what we all want in real life?
This Dracula needed to catch the imagination of a far more modern audience who have a broader scope of needs. The current generation as a whole will never ever watch the original or those created soon after. I don't remember the last time I seen a black and white movie on my screen never mind someone actually wanting to watch one. I suppose that makes my review for others and not entirely self-opinionated although now doubt that can be debated!
Only this series could get away with endless bloody action from start to finish while still sustaining the core principles of why it is all happening. In a cheap movie this would be seen as just a cheap attempt to grab attention whatever the plot. In Spartacus: Blood and Sand: Wrath of the Gods it is deserving as many key characters are slain for reasons known to anyone who has viewed season 2. We are treated to the ending of many more key characters than most series would offer with twists that surprise even if all alone we suspected as much.
Thumbs up. The director must show the cunning and strategic mind of Spartacus throughout Season 3 but I think we should also see the new addition of a split story line, based on current slaves to be released later, so that the viewer can be strongly reminded of the freedom being fought for.
