Take the Lead (2006)
Very Good Movie and I'm being Picky
I just saw this movie last night and really enjoyed it. As always, Antonio Banderas was excellent. The problem I have is with the ending. I didn't feel satisfied and left the theater with complaints.
At the end, at the finish of the dance competition, the blonde dancer makes a comment to one of the kids and gets the same response back that was used earlier in the film, probably between the same two characters. I would have preferred that the whole encounter be slowed down. It was here and gone in 5 seconds, or that was the way it felt. It would have had a bigger impact if it had been given more space to form, instead of as an afterthought. This 'reversing the responses by the characters' seems to be an often used technique in some other movies I've seen, so it isn't an original thought. But, if the film makers are going to use this kind of a gimmick, then they might have done it with a little more finesse.
I can understand that the ending is full of high energy and everything is fast fast fast, but this little comment/response piece didn't do anything for me except irritate my brain.
I guess my problem is that I sat for almost two hours watching a really good movie and it ended less gracefully than I would have preferred. It felt like very little attention was paid to the ending or they just ran out of film.
The movie was great up until the end. I know I'm harping, but I obviously can't let this go. The movie still deserves an eight out of ten for the amazing acting by all involved. I would recommend it to my friends, who aren't as picky as I. Although I saw it with two of my friends and they had the same reaction as I. So...you make up your own mind.
