The Messengers (2007)
Scary movie with a moral
I went to see this movie with my boyfriend, who loves scary movies and has no standards as to what makes a great movie.
This movie was so creepy. There were a lot of jumpy moments, probably due to the fact that there was no score. No building or swelling music, just silence that left the audience to build its own tension. If you're in a theatre with a bunch of obnoxious people, the experience won't be as good.
The conflict between the members of the family works very well and gives the story depth. This movie shows the importance of sticking together with family. It teaches forgiveness and that everyone deserves a second chance.
The dialogue was mediocre. There was no chemistry between the actors. The scenes between the parents (played by Dylan McDermott and Penelope Ann Miller) and Jess (played by Kristen Stewart) were unbelievable. The mother character (Miller) was very unlikable.
The stand-out performances belonged to Stewart, the Turner twins, and John Corbett. Stewart is easy to empathize with and does a great job looking terrified. The Turner twins are very cute, thanks to their big brown eyes. ***SPOILER*** Corbett takes an unexpected turn as the villain and does so convincingly.
The special effects were convincing as well.
Overall, it's a pretty good date movie. If you end up sitting in front of obnoxious people, you'll hate it. It's a great story about family unity.
