Not a bad film but it's not sci-fi!
Before judging this film you need to understand, what were you expecting from it. I have expected an 'Alien' like sci-fi film (I'm a big fan of sci-fi...), but what I got is 'Lost' like mystery with a lot of dead ends for sci-fi. Very disappointing! I think we need a new genre of film here, something like 'sci-mystery' to remove any confusion for the public. BTW Lost isn't declared as sci-fi!
OK, so why I think the Prometheus doesn't deserve to be called sci-fi:
- Characters!!! very odd behaviour, I can't associate with none of them. They seem unreal, except of course David but he doesn't save the situation unfortunately.
- Too many unexplained details convenient only to create the atmosphere in the film (ex. aliens' hologram, types of organisms and mutations, stars configuration in the ancient caves etc). I have never complained about my imagination especially in sci-fi field, but I'm keep thinking about all these opened questions. I'm trying to explain them (create some mini scenarios) but all variants are rubbish because there are too many of them... All variants seem like the ending season of Lost :), You need some TV-Series to cover them all and you need to do this fast because the time is tight and you also need to fit some character development in it as well.
And the worst thing is that the idea is brilliant! the technologies and the experience to implement it are here.
Dear Ridley, please stick to the genre in the future and don't confuse people with nice trailers! Many thanks.
