A Classic!!! fore years to com. like Michael,Freddy,Jason and Letherface
The town of Derry in 1989 is terrorised by a demon disguised as a clown until a group of kids decide to fight back. Remake of the 1990 TV mini series. One of the best Stephen King adaptations, coming across like a coming of age drama meets monster movie with excellent performances from the kids and a terrifying excellent performance from Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise the Dancing Clown, one of horror cinema's all time great monsters who in time i can imagine being as well remembered as the likes of Robert Englund as Freddy Kreuger. Dark, creepy, tense and macabre with some humour in places and feeling like a cross between Stand By Me, an 80's Stephen King adaptation, The Goonies, Nightmare On Elm Street, Super 8 and TV series Stranger Things and faithful to the mini series without copying it. This is only part 1 or chapter 1 with part 2 to follow. Up there with the all time great horror movies. Do not watch if you don't like clowns.
If you like kids movies like spy kids and Harry Potter.....awful!!
Valerian is one of the biggest disappointments in science fiction ever. Trite story, abysmal acting, silly dialog - a giant extravaganza of special effects serving no end at all. I wish I could get back the two hours of my life I wasted. There should be a warning attached to this excuse for a film that if you are over about 25 years old watching this disaster might be dangerous to your mental health. What was Besson thinking? Ripping off Star Wars with yet another movie? There is Jaba the hut, a garbage chute, a stupid teenage romance, idiotic chase scenes. And then of course the Avatar ripoffs of sleek skinny aliens and glowing things all over the place. This film is an embarrassment to the science fiction genre.
The Void (2016)
If you like the think, this is good Yes so good!!
The premise of this movie at first feels like a simple creature feature. It's standard horror fare set in a hospital, but this movie goes a little higher concept in its aspirations. There is a lot here just below the surface. The creature effects were some of the best I've ever seen which is unsurprising when you find out that the two directors were respectively a makeup artist and an art director for many years before. All the effects look like they were done practically and if there is any cgi it's unnoticed except for one unfortunate green screen scene. The action was explosive and cathartic in nature. Mostly this film just gives a sense of dread, a sense of insignificance. It doesn't feel like there is any way that these people will survive what is being thrown at them. I'd call it the best Doom movie we will ever get because it does give a good sense of what our collective imaginations have decided hell is like. The triangles and the cult aspect were also welcome additions and the aesthetics it adds subtly changes your reaction to the film in a way I would not have expected. This was one of the best theater horror experiences I've ever had and one of the best modern horror movies I've seen.

It Comes at Night (2017)
This not horro, avoid like the plague!! So bad
I wish the earlier ratings were honest and true. First of all it was not a horror movie. Since IMDb is one of most trusted sources, people look at the reviews before making the decision to buy or not buy the tickets and watch or not watch the movie. This really takes away from the credibility of IMDb. I will never ever look at IMDb in the future. It was meant to be a joke, it was not funny. Lets get some things right, the movie was horrible. There was no point to it. The movie name had nothing to do with the movie or the senseless events in it. If the reviews and ratings were meant for cheating people, then rest assured, you succeeded. I wasted an hour and a half of my life. The money I paid for it is a different story all together. I think the earlier fraudulent reviews should be taken down and the movie should be flagged. Ridiculous.
Underrated monster movie!!!
This is an intense and solid movie that was eclipsed by Jurassic Park and national news stories when it was released. It deserved more credit than it received and had it been released at a different time, it would have been a much bigger hit on the silver screen. This movie has awesome effects that are still good on a TV screen but are no comparison to how you would have felt in the movie theater with a huge screen. Even so, the movie kept us at the edge of our seats even on a little computer screen. The plot isn't like the Godzilla movies of old but actually makes sense in a scientific way as presented in this movie. It's a cliff hanger of a movie with characters you will like and characters you will want to smack. That, by the way, is a sign of a good movie when the acting is good enough to arouse emotions both good and bad. So grab the popcorn but go to the bathroom first because once this rocket ship of a movie takes off, you will hate to break the tension by hitting the pause button.
Kong: Skull Island (2017)
Classic monster movie!!
Kong: Skull Island is a 2017 American monster film; let's be clear this isn't Shakespeare and unlike the dreadful 2014 Godzilla the film doesn't take itself too seriously. The film has the feel of a classic 90s Blockbuster; now depending on your view of 90s Blockbusters this is either a good thing or a bad thing. The film is a rip roaring, funny and fast paced monster movie where the monster gets the same amount of screen time as the rest of the cast. Although this is the cast; Tom Hiddleston as James Conrad, Samuel L. Jackson as Preston Packard, John Goodman as William "Bill" Randa, Brie Larson as Mason Weaver, Jing Tian as San Lin, Toby Kebbell as Jack Chapman, John Ortiz as Victor Nieves, Corey Hawkins as Houston Brooks, Jason Mitchell as Glenn Mills, Shea Whigham as Earl Cole, Thomas Mann as Reg Slivko, Eugene Cordero as Reles and John C. Reilly as Hank Marlow. 13 main cast members all vying for 118 minutes worth of screen time.
The Amityville Horror (2005)
An Incredible Horror, modern classic
I am, as it were, a horror nut and I can thoroughly recommend this film. After seeing the previous Amityville Horrors I wasn't sure how this one would rate as the first one appeared to be true strictly based on the true story and therefore un-scary, and the others were stupidly unbelievable. This film tops them in shocking horror whilst trying to stick to a semi-realistic storyline. It also goes more into the reason why the house is as haunted as it seems. Without giving too much away this film has several very frightening bits which surpass many horrors of modern times. The lingering image of the little girl and the daemonic faces which haunt the family are a great touch. The ending is good but seems to leave you wondering what happens afterwards. This may not hold greatly to the true story but it is a fantastic supernatural thriller. A must see for any horror lovers.
The Conjuring 2 (2016)
A good sequel! Highly recommended!
Wow!! Just wow!! James Wan is fast becoming by top horror director of all time. So far the Insidious franchise has put my faith back in actual scary horror movies and not the awful horror violence movies such as Rob Zombies god awful Halloween 2 where there is nothing scary whatsoever seeing someone stabbed 13 times. But with Dead Silence, Insidious and now The Conjuring, James Wan has made and produced some classic horrors. With the first Conjuring, I thought it was excellent up to the kind of rip-off ending where it reminded me far too much of The Exorcist. That was my only gripe with the film though.
In The Conjuring 2 however, yes we have another possession but it is the three 'demons' that Wan has added to this movie which just terrifies you. It was bad enough having nightmares about Red Faced Demon and The Bride in Black from Insidious. Now we have Bill Wilkins (The Old Man), The Nun and The Crooked Man. All three of these played on my fears that I had as a kid and they were truly terrifying. Like with Annabelle who was introduced in The Conjuring and got her own spin off film, the same will now happen with The Nun in this film and I for one can't wait. A special mention must go to the production design as well because the house that the family live in in this movie would be terrifying WITHOUT all the haunting's going on!! Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren are even better in this than the first one and are a great on screen couple with quite a nice scene at the end dancing to an Elvis Presley track.
If you are 6 and like pokemon this is your movie!!! Boring!
boring and overly complicated with absolutely no character development...extremely disappointed. What a load of tosh. Don't want to spoil but they used one character as an exposition device all the way through and then sacked off at the end like it was nothing. Meh acting, less than exciting story. Bloody awful lot. Just cashing in on the Harry Potter name .just really boring.
For a while it is exactly what movies are supposed to be ... entertaining! I liked the unusual animals but the magic imagery is a poor copy of the HP imagery. After a while the beasts and animals are just more HP type animals. Unlike HP story lines which always had stories within stories within stories this is shallow by comparison.
Bloody" awesome! # 1 zombie movie , must see
The best zombie film I've seen in a long time. With its ultra fast piling over each other infected undead it is more in the style of World War Z than TV's The Walking Dead and also does not have the latter's extreme gore. There is enough blood and violence so it is not too light for a hardened zombie fan but focuses more on tension and action. It also managed to build up the characters so I cared about them and once that happens the tension stakes are that much higher. The main characters are a business man and his young daughter on a train when a zombie apocalypse begins. Death while infected causes people to instantly turn so one infected girl on the train causes the infection to spread like wildfire and very soon two groups of survivors remain, separated by infected carriages. Edge of the seat tension and many action set pieces follow as the smaller group tries to get to the front of the train and things escalate in all sorts of ways with some unexpected turns, big action, all building to a powerful climax. I loved it and was gripped from start to finish, I'm a big zombie fan and it did not disappoint. It's serious in tone and has some great character drama with some decent arcs and things play out in ways that have just a slight spin against Western expectations. The zombies are really well done, not too heavily made up (they're fresh) but they move well, all twitchy and sometimes freaky spasms, very fast and lethal. It is Korean language with subtitles but is not dialogue heavy. The DVD also includes behind the scenes footage and 2 trailers for the director's forthcoming Seoul Station which is a cartoon that appears part of this same undead world.
The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)
A excellent Horror gem, classic!!
I'm a big horror fan and this is the best little horror yarn I've seen in ages. Jane Doe is an excellent example that good horror movies are still being made. Top notch story, effects and scares. Highly recommended.
Well acted, with some recognisable faces. Brian Cox is great as the small town coroner that leads the autopsy on the titular body, in one scene he even managed to give me a sad lump in the throat which was an unexpected feeling during an unnerving horror flick. Emile Hirsch plays his son and assistant and though he's good doesn't have as much impact as Cox. Roose Bolton (Michael McElhatton) makes an appearance as the town sheriff.
Where this film really succeeds is in doing something a lot of modern horror has forgotten about - it toys with the viewers imagination, creating an uneasy feeling out of the narrative, half light, sound and shadow. This is not to say you don't get to see anything grotesque or unsettling, as certain scenes are not for the squeamish.
I don't want to spoil the story but will say this, the resolution is not quite as good as the build up. It's very hard for a horror film, especially one that plays on fear and the imagination, to deliver a conclusion that is suitably unsettling - this one half succeeds. But the ride is more than worth it and the ending is far from a failure.
If you like horror, watch this.
Lights Out (2016)
Super suspense horror, wow
This was one of the most impressive horror films from a debut director that I have ever seen and I will certainly be seeking out some of his short films on the strength of this. It's a simple premise that is pulled off with such brilliance it will be a classic horror that I keep going back to. It's one that I missed at the cinema but I found it just as effective watching it at home. I love horror films but very few truly scare me or even make me jump because the genre is populated with so many clichés I can usually see the scares coming a mile away but this was surprising, terrifying and had such a gut punch of an ending that it's not one that will easily be forgotten.
Don't Breathe (2016)
Love it! The best horror film of 2016 - A classic!!
This is certainly one fantastic thriller, a very original home invasion movie that's very tense and lots of fun and gripping throughout its running time, this movie is described in some reviews as a horror film but its really not, its horrific maybe as a thriller but not a straight up horror, there's no supernatural elements here. The movie is also described as having the best twist in years but that's overhyping just a tad I think as there is not so much a twist that makes you say wow I didn't see that coming its just a twisted story, none the less its a very well directed movie, very nice looking sets and locations, very well acted by a great cast and a tense soundtrack, if you like scares and jumps and nail-biting movies this is certainly for you, its not blood and guts. A must see thriller that's very well made and wont be forgotten for a while.
Over hyped and mediocre film!!
I didn't think it was all that good, its one of those films that gets over hyped and in the end turns out quite mediocre and boring, yes its funny in parts but you won't be rushing to see it again! Personally, I thought the acting was incredible and I loved the character development. What I didn't like was the portrayal of multiple personality disorder. It went from a very interesting story to a mediocre silly ending where he turns into a monster and starts killing people and starts doing supernatural things. That ruined it for me personally. M Night shyamlans direction was horrible towards the end. So far his best film will only be the sixth sense.
47 Meters Down (2017)
Now this is a shark movie!!! Wow
In the deep has the most realistic looking shark out of any shark film I've watched. The tension builds up nicely throughout and every time the shark shows up is a treat. It first I didn't know what to expect from this movie, as it has become so hard to take shark movies seriously, however this movie surprised me, it is the best shark movie since Jaws and honestly the best creature feature in ages! Bottom line: The shark is awesome, hopefully this movie being successful at the box office will give way to more heavily plot based shark films; where the shark looks just as real as the one seen here. 10/10 for being the only entertaining shark film since Deep Blue Sea.
Trick 'r Treat (2007)
21st Century horror done in an 80s style
Apert from John carpenter's original "Halloween", this is this is my favourite holiday movie. Multiple stories are brilliantly woven together in true halloween spirit.
Pleasant and Enjoyable. Perhaps not words you generally associate with a horror film. But then since when did every horror film have to gross out with gratituitous gore or scare senseless with slashing and stalking? To be fair calling this film a horror is quite misleading. Really it's a celebration of the various legends and imagery associated with the holiday. Watching the DVD featurette about the making of the film and the lore of Halloween should help people understand how to take this movie (clearly some reviewers didn't get it). Perhaps calling it a fictional documentary that toys with the themes and monsters of horror would be more appropriate? The only reason we have monsters here (and it's nice to be able to talk about monsters without solely referring to just Vampires or Zombies) is because it's All Hallow's Eve.
Personally I liked that a non-linear approach was taken in telling the various tales on offer here as it sets it apart from the anthologies that came before it and which it would inevitably be compared to. The interweaving of the stories is preferable to having them stand alone as it's been done so many times before.
The cinematography is top notch throughout and all those involved in shooting the film deserve hearty pats on the back, as do the actors and actresses. To a man (or woman) they all give good performances with a few excellent ones thrown in.
I only saw one twist coming but then I constantly force myself not to start second guessing a film (What's the point? You're only going to spoil it for yourself if you're right), if you do regularly second guess you might find you're enjoyment of the film somewhat tempered.
The Final Girls (2015)
A little gem of a movie
If your an 80's Horror/Slasher FanBoy like myself then this film is for you. Clever nods to the audience, tongue n cheek, self aware/meta humour is in full force. Think the wit and humour of Scream blended together with Friday the 13th, plus some surprisingly emotional depth. Loved it! I cannot fathom why this did not get a cinema release, it is absolutely brilliant.
A clever, knowing, (though never self mocking) homage to 80s slasher flicks. The cast are uniformly brilliant and great to see Nina Dobrev in something other than the Vampire Diaries. If you love Scream and the self referential horror you are sure to enjoy this. Give it a try, this will go down as another of those hidden gems that COME ALIVE on DVD, rather like 'Trick R Treat.' Neglected and ignored when in fact it is sheer brilliance and really quite moving. Lovely commentary too!
The Guest (2014)
Be My Guest
Well worth the time and effort that goes into this show, acting and storyline is fabulous with the suspense outstanding what else can I say. Now he is here and that is going to be dangerous, a friend of the family comes home to his mates place with a very dark secret and that is going to be a killer. Want more, well there is a beautiful girl in the picture but that is all I'm telling as to spoil it for you isn't half the fun as not knowing anything is worse so if I get wrapped up in the show so you can too!. Now make a move so you can come home in plenty of time to collect your munchies sit in front of the television put your feet up and relax, this might be the only time you can so I rated this an A grade for the brilliant twist and turns that will have you thinking throughout the movie and watch full on entertainment right in your own home. Enjoy!
Any aging film fan will tell you that they used to make them better. Films used to have characters and storyline, rather than just bombastic action. It may be true that in terms of blockbusters we are going through a period of stagnation, but look deeper into the world of indies and there are still loads of great flicks to be found. A recent year has not passed with several great new horror films in particular escaping and 'The Guest' is certainly one of these; an intelligent take on an 80s horror, but with a modern feel.
Dark Places (2015)
Lame Crap, Awful boring!
This movie is just plain stupid ans so slow and boring!!. I think the director totally misunderstood the story. He didn't bother to build up the plot lines and the pacing is with the nicest word a disaster. The casting is by the worst you could imagine for these characters. Christina Hendricks as Patty Day and Charlize Theron as Libby day. Really!!?? They are supposed to be poor farmer white trash, not sex bombs. The rights for the book must have been sold way before gone girl. Otherwise it had surely been taken better care of. It is really sad that a good story like the one in the book have been treated in such a bad way. I'm honestly so disappointed that I can't write any constructive comments about it. If you have read the book, please don't ruin it by watching this crap.
Fantastic Four (2015)
Time for Fox to give the rights back to Marvel
Scientist Reed Richards has discovered the secrets of interdimensional travel and with a group of friends goes into another dimension. However something goes wrong and when they return they discover that they all have different powers. One of Marvel's best comics gets the movie treatment. The 3rd movie after the 2005 Fantastic Four movie and the 2007 sequel Rise Of The Silver Surfer and 4th if you count the so bad it was never officially released 1994 film. For some reason the Fantastic Four just doesn't translate well to the screen. A decent cast, Miles Tellar, Kate Mara, Michael B Jordan and Jamie Bell are all OK and the film livens up after a painfully slow start and there is a decent scifi film struggling to get out but it isn't anything remotely like the original comics. Time for Fox to give the rights back to Marvel! An Insult to Comic Fans !!
It Follows (2014)
Original and creepy
This movie does have an awful lot of hype around it, the only way to enjoy this movie is don't jump in thinking its going to be a masterpiece, its not but it still is a fantastic movie for many reasons, its certainly very original, the story is basically about a girl who is currently dating a guy, they go out one night and have sex in the back of his car, he tells her he has passed something to her, something that will follow her, the only way to survive is to pass it to another person, then the terror begins!! you need to go into this movie with a very good imagination, I think most people only rate this low because they don't get it, the movie does leave many things open to explanation which is good, you have to fill in the blanks which makes it more fun, the movie has a good pace and gets more and more tense as it unfolds, the movie is directed really well with some nice quiet suburban locations, its certainly good at the scares and the feeling of sheer dread when the followers are on screen, the movie is very grounded and has little use for cheesy effects which is great, the cast is talented, all the female leads are great young actresses, the movies main star for me is the awesome music score by composer disasterpeace, the music really helps give such a feeling of fear, much like John Carpenters theme did for Halloween, the movie like people have said feels like a long middle, you don't get an explanation of where the supernatural element comes from and the ending is left very open to explanation too but you just have to use your imagination, the movie is certainly worth checking out if your a horror fan, its really well made, its not amazing so don't hype yourself up, its clever and original at least and will probably certainly be a future classic indeed
Charlie's Farm (2014)
Best slasher gore movie in a long time!!
The first 30min is slow, when the killings start they are good and gory The rating on IMDb is fare to low!!!
This movie is a must for horror fans, a great modern slasher with all the right elements, not since Hatchet have we had a really powerful on screen maniac, Charlie certainly is one character I want more of! The movie is by the book slasher, a very simple set up and easy to follow story and plenty of mayhem, the movie is about a group of friends who decide to out in the Australian outback to explore Charlie's farm, there is an urban legend around the farm about the psychotic family that lived there who murdered and ate people, its believed their boy Charlie is still alive and lives in the outback somewhere, it borrows many ideas of course from many other old horror movies from the 80's and 90's and mixes them up, but the old formula always works and never gets old no matter how many times its done, the movie is a great throw back to classic 80's slashers like Texas chainsaw massacre and Friday the 13th etc, there is certainly plenty of violence and brutal bloody death scenes all done on a great budget, all the effects are practical and look great, the movie starts at a slightly slow pace but really kicks in as it goes and gets nasty and bloody especially toward the last half hour, the movie has a decent cast I thought, your usual dudes and babes waiting to be hacked up, Tara Reid hasn't been in anything this decent in a long while, Kane (Jason Voorhees) Hodder gets a small role which is always cool and Bill (House of a 1000 corpses) Mosley has a good part too, Nathan (Mad Max fury road) Jones plays Charlie and does a great job, a huge scary looking actor who has a great make-up and wardrobe in this movie, this is certainly one to pick up, its fun its funny its a better than average bloody slasher gore movie, I just hope we get to see Charlie return soon!!
Entertaining clown slasher...
As far as clown slasher go, I rarely see any true effort put into them - especially these days. "Clown" is actually a pretty refreshing entry in the genre - being clearly of modest budget, yet still managing to come across as a professional looking flick with an unusually likable cast of characters, a reasonably memorable villain! There's also a few decent and relatively gory deaths, cleverly themed after traditional clown tricks.
The gore level in this movie is extremely high. Every kill is based upon a trick that a clown but all with the intention of making your skin crawl. It won't be to every one's taste, as limbs are literally ripped from bodies, heads kicked of.
think that most will enjoy this movie knowing ahead of time that it's a gory slasher.
The Cottage (2008)
Great British Horror Flick a Gem!
This is a surprisingly entertaining film. It shows what a bunch of good actors and producers can do on a budget. Nowhere near as gory as some and the plot has been done to death a thousand times but when the gore comes it is really surprisingly well done and will make you jump out of your skin at times. Well worth the money and one to watch more than once. Miss Ellison is a delight. Hilarious Comedy mixed with blood & gore, I think the cast must have had a real job to keep a straight face during filming, especially the scene with David and the bumbling idiot character, Andrew. (re the bottle opener, and the balaclava).... What comedy genius!
THIS FILM TRULY IS A GEM!!
It's 'BLOODY' Great!!!! a gem
Severance is a gory film with some fairly intense horror but it's also very funny. The actors which include Toby Stephens, Laura Harris, Danny Dyer and Tim Mcinnerny all seem to be enjoying themselves playing memorable roles as work colleagues who find themselves in a desperate situation. This film is a rare comedy/ horror that works as both and can join Shaun of the Dead, Evil Dead 2 and American Werewolf in London for successfully managing to both scare and be funny. Severance is entertaining from beginning to end and very rewatchable.
An all-round stimulating thrill ride: gore, thrills, suspense, "whodunnit", laughs and fine acting from all the cast. A rare movie that actually manages to keep its audience interested throughout its duration. You really can't blink or you may miss a laugh or scare! A solid popcorn flick, best watched late at night, lights down.
You shall be Entertained!
