Apollo 18 (2011)
Found footage at its mediocre-est
Today, I decided to go see Apollo 18. This was not an impulse, as i have been very excited for it since i saw the first trailer. The movie, to say the least was disappointing. I HIGHLY recommend seeing another film if possible, as this movie is only good as a trailer. The following contains major spoilers, pretty much revealing the entire plot of the movie. If you wish to see the movie without prior knowledge, be warned. It's bad.
First of all, the explanation of what the tapes actually are is far from stellar. Basically, it promotes the promotional website LunarTruths.com. So two astronauts go to the surface of the moon on a top secret mission, and one stays in a command module orbiting the gray rock. Right off the bat, one 'naut goes into a deep moon crater, discovering an abandoned USSR moon lander and a dead, dried up Cosmonaut. Meanwhile, the camera focuses on moving rocks every once in a while. Boringness ensues, until the commander of the mission goes outside to observe a noise. The noise turns out to be a small, lunar crab (that reminds me of those cute little crabs in Davy Jones' Locker in Pirates III) that wiggled inside the commander's suit, and eventually into his torso. The other crew member takes out the parasite, which now looks like a moon turd. Soon after, the commander gets all woozy and space crazy, causing some problems. The lunar lander just happens to start to fail, with some little crab pop scares scattered about. They go back to the Russian lander in hopes of leaving the moon. When they get back to the crater, the commander gets pulled in and lost, while the second in command reaches the CCCP lander and makes contact with Houston, who tells him he is forbidden to leave the moon. He says 'eff it, and leaves anyway, not before the commander comes back form the dead to bang on the door and get eaten even more by the moon crustaceans. As the captain goes back up to the command module despite NASA's warnings, he discovers that we discover that he is in fact infected with the space crab virus. A whole bunch of crabs come out of nowhere and attack him, causing the lander to crash into the command module, killing both the remaining astro-dummies.
That was fact. Now here's opinion. By the way, END SPOILERS. First of all the super-8 effect that goes through the incredibly short movie is boring, overused and not very effective. Also, as an aspiring special effects makeup artist, I noticed that the one time makeup effects were used in the film, the latex appliance was terribly hidden, but then again, I look for things like that, and it can easily can be missed. Also, I felt that the "horror" aspect of the film was not real horror. It was the typical "jump-scare" film, as in Paranormal Activity, that the horror industry is headed in. Oh well. Before the becomes a rant, I better wrap this up. It is not a good movie, but might be worth it if your into jump-scarers. Again, it could have been much better.
Final word: Blegh.
