Flight of the Intruder (1991)
Underrated film that is above and beyond.
Flight Of The Intruder is a great film and a better war film at that. It is sad to see how underrated and looked over it has become. Like other users have stated I guess you can relate its lake of popularity as a result of other "Top Gun" type films released in that time period.
This film is one of the few that depicts the Vietnam War in a way that is not a "feel good about ourselves America" style that was plagued with films like "Missing in Action" and "First Blood Rambo pt.II". It depicts the downfall and low morale that arrised towards the end of the war.
So many great actors are in this film and even though they do not all have killer performances, they make for a great cast that blends well together. While watching this film I couldn't stop laughing at some points because the interactions of cast members and the jokes they made.Like "this is the most fun you'll ever have with your clothes on Doc...O Jesus" or "Got room for a six pack and a pizza" and Willem Dafoe's reaction to the bar fight. It was just great to watch.
The flight and bombing scenes are well done and shows the frustration of loosing friends to "A bunch of trees" day in and day out. With the lose of public support at home and unknown reason we are still fight lingering in the tone. It does a great job showing this.
The ending scene is one of my favorite scenes in all the films I have scene. As it clearly depicted scenarios that plagued American pilots through the war. It also showed should the brotherly love for one another and how they would go into hell to get them out even if they loose their own lives.
Even Brad Johnsons romantic interest was done well. It was there but it wasn't overly excessive.
Overall this is a great movie and worth a watch. Effects are good, story is good, characters are great and you will walk away with a good taste in your mouth.
Tears of the Sun (2003)
Let me educate you about this film!
After spending some time reading a lot of the user reviews on this film I find myself shaking my head at all these people who clearly have no idea about most of the content in this film.
I come from a family that consists of Military Operaters that range from a Green Beret to a Navy Seal who have fought in the Vietnam era to the Afganistan era so I just might know a thing or two about them. I would like to pass this knowledge on to you.
What you need to know is that these men are not "Soldiers" or "The Army" as most of you refer to them as. These men are US Navy SEALs which is the most highly trained and feared military unit in the world. They are part of the US Special Operations Community which are tasked with extremely risky and dangerous missions that include what we see in Tears Of The Sun. They are the 1st troops into a combat zone well before the "Army and Marines" arrive. Special Operations is a highly exclusive community in the US Military and should not be regarded as traditional Military personnel. When they operate they do not have massive military units to back them up they are alone. Frequently without support from air, artillery, medivac and resupply. They are in charge of how they complete their mission and must alter game plans when situations change. So for those of you who say "A seasoned LT. would not disobey orders" he just might given the situation on hand. Special Operations members are taught to "think for themselves" not to just take orders which at large makes them who they are.
Of course this is a movie and like any other movie depicting situations involving combat they make mistakes. This film does a good job keeping many typical mistakes and clichés at a minimum. The only real mistakes I saw were during the climax when the FA18 provided CAS for the SEALs. Both jets were seen taking off without ordnance and then as they approach the target they then have only air to air missile loaded which could not have created the explosions seen. The SEALs also do not use cover as much as they should have during the firefights. Common mistakes that are normally seen are the need to never reload when engaging targets this movie does a good job making sure that doesn't happen. The actors do a good job acting as a unit and making fall back maneuvers as well as handling there weapons in the proper way an operator would.
Some of you had said that this is "just another American propaganda film" or "Why cant a whole army kill 7 Soldiers". From what I see a large number of these negative comments are made by those that live outside the US. I understand views other countries have on America. I myself am disgusted in the way some things are done and run here as well.
But you need to understand that movies such as Black Hawk Down and this are not a reflection of America as a whole. They reflect on those few individuals who do extraordinary things against impossible odds and then go out and do it all over again with no recognition. These movies are not propaganda these are films that recognize individuals for the things they do. The extraordinary things these men do are not for their country, they do it for strangers and each others.
The odds these SEALs face which some find unrealistic have been played out in history with outcomes similar to this movie. So before you say unrealistic why don't you give these guys some credit and look at the facts. The difference between them and the hundreds of enemy soldiers is simple. The enemy has only known one kind of war, the genocide kind which in my opinion isn't a war when your enemy has already dug his grave and is just waiting for you to execute him. They are young, inexperienced and have little to no training with weapons and tactics. SEALs train for all types of scenarios and spend most of their time educating themselves and learning from their mistakes. Seals are combat veterans that operate in all enviorments in all hemispheres of the world. For those of you who mention Black Hawk Down I have an example for you. Remember the two Delta Force Snipers that soley protected a downed Black Hawk from a crowd in the hundreds? Well guess what that really happened and yes they did die protecting their friend but they killed about a hundred Somali militia in the process without any support. So before we call it unrealistic lets give these guys the benefit of the doubt.
Overall I would recommend this film to everyone. It is what it is, a Hollywod action/war picture that depicts current events that happen all over the world and have been for some time. It blends a mix of action, drama and conflict very well. Without stretching the boundaries of what is real and what is unrealistic. You will find some clichés in this film but not many. The acting is good (not great) for the most part with small amounts of character development, however you can still make a connection with the characters. I felt that this film did a great job in all aspects. The plot was good and believable, depictions of the SEALS was done well, firefight scenes were done realistically, Setting was awesome and the climax and closing were done right leaving you with a good taste in your mouth. I gave this film an 8/10 rating due to its minor errors as described above.
Enjoy your film folk's!
Shark Night 3D (2011)
Shark Night 3D Review
So if you came to this movie with the hopes that you may have found an actually good shark film that sits behind the 1975 hit "Jaws"...then you have come to the wrong place. Shark Night 3D should be placed hand in hand with Pirhana 3D when it comes to film judging. It is quite frankly a "Just for fun" kind of film that doesn't need to be criticized for all the typical things movies in this genre are.
Shark Night 3D is a movie that is enjoyable to watch if you can take it with a grain of salt. The film is more of a Teen slasher film which includes all the bells and whistles that come along with them. You know that young unknown cast in their normal movie fashion that makes no sense(Jock,EasyGirl,Smart/GoodGirl,Geek and Geeks friend). *Spoiler Alert* A Killer (Sharks + People). Bad decision making skills...ETC. You get the picture.
Scares are a rarity in this film almost every time someone is about to die you will know about it and see it coming from a mile away...trust me on this one. But there are a few curve balls in there as well so don't worry. *Spoiler Alert* A lot of the Sharks and Shark Sequences in this film are CGI which is something that a lot of people disagree with. I mean your not gonna see many "Bruces" out there attacking helpless college kids but there are a few. Overall the film uses some good effects that work well and some CGI that are so so but the effects are better then most recent shark films.
Acting is average for this type of movie but who really cares ITS A HORROR MOVIE! Mind you its not horrible but not good either. Character development is sparse even for the characters the script wants us to root for so when people are killed your like "eh whatever".
The Plot is above average compared to many shark films that have surfaced over the last decade or so. It has its cool points which are believable and not out stretched.
Overall it wasn't a bad film. I would recommend anyone who enjoys films for their entertainment and fun to take a look its worth a shot.
