My Favorite Actors of the Golden Age, dawn of the talking picture through the sixties.
a list of 60 people
This is a list in order of my favorite movie actors, from the early days of the movies through the end of the sixties, the stars of my early years. It is strictly personal favorites list, without regard to talent or acting ability, just a fun tribute to the wonderful stars of the golden years. I've added each actor's "signature" film, that being the role that best embodies the persona of the veteran actor, and not necessarily the best film of his career. Enjoy!
The Best Actors of today -- from 1980 through the present!
a list of 96 people
This list is supplemental to the first list (best actors of the golden age (1930-1969), and also supplemental to the next list (the actors of the 70's - 11 dynamic male actors.) This is the third actor list which brings us forward for the last 30 years, from 1980 to present day!! I have included each actor's signature film; the actor's best individual performance, and not necessarily the best film in which he has appeared, nor the most awarded performance.
The Best Character Actors of all time.
a list of 209 people
This is a list of the all time greatest character actors in film from the dawn of talking pictures through the present. It is somewhat a subjective exercise in defining exclusively, "character actor", as opposed to leading actor, therefore, what might appear as glaring omissions, e.g., Michael Caine, Anthony Quinn, Walter Huston, P.S. Hoffman, Robert Duvall, Kevin Kline, James Mason, Edward Norton, Kevin Bacon, and many others known for outstanding supporting roles, may be categorized as predominantly lead actors and therefore missing from the list. But it's just for fun anyway. (I've included a memorable role or two for each). Expanded to 209 great actors as of 2015. Enjoy!
My Favorite Performances By Year, 1931 to the present.
a list of 84 people
This is a list of my favorite performances by year, for each year in descending order, from the present, back through 1931. It is especially rewarding as the acting role is cited irrespective of awards or nominations or even critical recognition, and is further not limited to a category of lead or supporting, male or female, small or large. In this sense, it is extremely liberating to just recall one great, haunting, delicious performance for each year, starting with the current year and going back through 1931. The only stress is choosing one of many notable performances. These are my favorites and not meant as a any further commentary aside from what was pleasing to myself. Hopefully, the reader will enjoy! (Still working on the comments section).
Oscar Oversights: The Best Acting performance for the year, not nominated for an acting Oscar.
a list of 81 people
This is a fun list of the best acting performance that failed to garner an acting Oscar nomination whether lead or supporting, male or female, etc. It's by year from 1934 to the present, in descending order from the current year. It's just a fun project to identify one acting performance that may have been overlooked for a nomination. Not saying should have won, just contended for a nomination. The debate for who should have won is another discussion and another list. This list is dedicated to the great Humphrey Bogart and his performance in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948), the most egregious and mystifying snub in Oscar history. Enjoy!!
Oscar Oversights: Best Picure Not Nominated, By Year
a list of 85 titles
This is a list of the Best Movies that failed to garner a nomination in the Best Picture category, by year for every year, 1930 to the present, in descending order. Quite obviously, some years featured several wonderful films not nominated because of the sheer number of "outstanding films" for a particular year, e.g. 1997, 1999, 1959, 1939. Some years have but a few "best picture caliber" films. So, it's a fun and interesting project to select just one for each year from 1930 to the present. This not to say that any of these should have won Best Picture, but rather "might" have contended for a nomination. Enjoy!
The Best 26 Films of George Clooney
a list of 26 titles
Talented, versatile and likeable actor, George Clooney has created many excellent movie characterizations since the late 80's and continuing to the present day. In addition, Mr. Clooney has been a very successful Producer and Director. His choices of projects have been tasteful, intelligent and entertaining. In addition, George is a kind hearted and generous humanitarian and has always given of his wealth and talent liberally. It is a pleasure to suggest 26 of his best acting efforts.
The Best 40 Films of Jason Robards
a list of 40 titles
The great character actor, Jason Robards, created many memorable, indelible screen characterizations over his long acting career, spanning from the late 50's through the end of the century. Mr. Robards played many historical characters, including President Lincoln (three times!), FDR, U.S. Grant, as well as literary giants Mark Twain, Dashiell Hamett and Ben Bradlee, and legendary characters from Shakespeare to Eugene O'Neill plays and, of course, Doc Holiday, Al Capone and Howard Hughes. To say it's an impressive list of credits is understatement. It is a pleasure to suggest 40 of the very best films of the wonderful Jason Robards.
Widmark Women: Actresses featured in films of Richard Widmark
a list of 99 people
My favorite actor, Richard Widmark co - starred with a vast array of Hollywood luminary actresses including legends, Anne Bancroft, Olivia deHavilland, Gene Tierney, Marilyn Monroe, Ingrid Bergman, and Faye Dunaway. Also surprising turns with, e.g., Sally Field, Judy Garland, Doris Day, Holly Hunter, and a very young Helen Hunt, and multiple appearances with Lauren Bacall, Vanessa Redgrave, Jean Peters, Carroll Baker, and Linda Darnell, among others. The list is surprisingly extensive. Enjoy!
My Favorite Films by Year from 1930.
a list of 85 titles
My favorite films, by year, from 1930 to present day, without regard to awards or critical acclaim, just my personal favorites. In three cases, 1943, 1963 and 2005, the "year" is counted for purposes of this list as the Oscar consideration year and may not coincide with the actual release date. Enjoy!
