The Viking (1928)
SPOILER - Ending of Movie
I enjoyed this fun movie and for the most part it was historically correct until the ending. SPOILER: The Vikings did NOT build the stone tower in Rhode Island which was built in 1700s. Proof of the Viking settlement came in 1960 (over 30 years after movie, 1928). Archaeological diggings of Vikings were found at northern tip of Newfoundland, Canada, at a now famous site called "L'Anse aux Meadows". Viking voyage to Newfoundland was in year 1,000 AD approx. After several years fighting with Indians and almost freezing to death, the Vikings gave up their North America venture. I saw Viking tools a few years ago on display in museum in St.John's in Newfoundland. SPOILER - there is no evidence that Vikings wore horns on their heads (although Helga makes a fashion statement with her head-dress). As Hitchcock famously said over a mistake an actor made - "it's only a movie".
Cumbia callera (2007)
Characters in Movie Like a Vermeer Painting
Very fascinating movie where the story of 3 young people is shown without dialog. The story, instead, develops by using facial expressions, body movements (including dance) with background of music. Thus, this movie is unusual plus low-keyed in contrast to the frenetic pace of modern life. The close-up portrayals of the actors when they are supposedly alone and introspective is similar to the famous oil paintings by Vermeer in the 17th century. Feelings expressed are thus subtle without blatant emotions of most movies. A relaxing and absorbing movie --- as a psychiatrist, I give it praise since the 3 young people show emotions but do so delicately. In its way, it's similar to the movie "Girl With A Pearl Earring", a story about Vermeer starring Scarlett Johansson.
Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
Great Movie Despite Preview and Beginning
Stay with this movie !!! A severely dysfunctional family subtly changes to a healthy one as movie progresses. Acting is superb by all -- it's very nice to see Alan Arkin once again. This is a morality play which is fun to watch. Preview of movie on TV is poor -- preview is depressing in mood and silly in content. This movie is a sleeper and one of the best of 2006. It portrays values in modern life in a satirical way but it does so in a very funny manner. This movie is well acted (I assume actors enjoyed making this film) with a very good script. It is well edited and directed as well. I would expect some academy awards coming from LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE.
