Best cult schlock horror zombie movie ever made
This movie is so funny and so brilliant for so many reasons. The 50's film style, the outrageous scenes, the clichéd storyline at the beginning, the gore, over bearing mothers and a beautiful love story.
The film is so well done, would even say sweet/ cute filming style to it. All the characters are brilliant, crappy, but brilliant. Nearly every scene is a classic. Peter Jacksons tour de force. Not for the squeamish, but I recommend to anyone who is fan of horror to watch this movie. Especially now. When it came out in the early 90s it was quite full on, considering what special effects were like back then. But this movie has grown into itself, is better now because of its use of at the time fairly good sfx, but now the sfx are hilarious and really make you appreciate the comedic value of the film. The movie has everything, zombies, zombie love, zombie babies, necrophilia humour, kungfufighting priest that kicks arse for the lord, grave robbing, new zealanders, 50s hoodlums, pissing on graves, self aware intestines, the most brutal funny deaths you'll see and a party from hell. From start to finish this movie is an absolute cult classic and deserves such status. Must watch, you'll be smiling the whole way through.
Light years ahead of its time, important cinema that everyone should watch
30 years on and this movie means just as much, if not more today than when it was made. One of the most important pieces of film to be ever made. If humans were to suddenly disappear and there was one piece of film that would sum up humanity, this would be it. Hauntingly remarkable if not slightly poignant insight into humanity and what we are, where we are going, where we came from. A timeless classic. This movie has no need for acting or talk or narration, just the music and images that some up a history of earth and what humans have done with this earth. Just breathtakingly beautiful, sends shivers up your spine watching it. This is a movie for the open minded person. Some people just don't get it, and for that I am truly sorry. This movie will open your mind, open your soul, and hopefully even change the way you look at life and the world. It will change your perception, and it did for me. Really words cannot describe this film, it just has to be experienced. If you are looking for an action flick or mindless entertainment, do not watch, watch this when you want to think. Earth processes are slow moving and are only noticeable after millions of years. Humans have only been here for a very short amount of time and look at what we have done. Watch this movie.
There's a reason why intelligent design is ridiculed....
Gave this 2/10 for the editor, as it was interestingly edited. Evolution has pretty much been proved. To not believe in evolution would be to not believe in gravity, or believe the earth is flat. You can see bacteria and micro organisms evolving in front of your eyes under a microscope. Religion spent hundreds of years 'bashing' people who didn't believe in God, and now that humanity is finally realizing the truth through generations of scientific study, this seems like a last ditch attempt at trying to regain control of their 'spiritual empire'. If anything that scientific communities are ostracizing ID pundits now is karma for what the church did for all that time. The movie pretty much sums up religion in a nutshell, we are right you are wrong then fingers over the ears going 'lalalalala'. This movie makes no attempt at actually trying to prove their ID theory, or even discuss it, just bash evolution like they did to non-christians for hundreds of years through the dark ages. I feel like I have lost IQ points just for watching it. I am a very open minded person, having watched this nonsense would prove I am, but this movie was juvenile. To make a movie that is trying to disprove something, you need to prove your point as well, it doesn't even do that. Spends the film interlacing scenes of Richard Dawkins and images of 50's movies and old nazi films, with Ben Steins boring monotone voice narrating. Look I could on about how these people are complete nut jobs and are slowing down the advancement of humanity but really, this is scary. That people out there who want to bring down all that humanity has achieved and worked on because they are brainwashed by a book that was written over 2000 years ago that claims to be the be all and end all of all that is. I would actually go so far as saying that Ben Stein is a dangerous man for humanity. Ben Stein a man who has publicly shown his ignorance of the topic in question, by saying that earths evolution has to do with the universe and gravity, and aerodynamics etc, also saying that he condones nuclear war even though he is a god fearing man. I could go on, I just feel compelled to write a review because this 'movie' shows that humanity still has a LONG LONG way to go and we are still fighting a intellectual war against a long established cult that has no idea and has no intention of relinquishing its stranglehold on the weak minded, which unfortunately is a lot of people. The thing that will always trump science over religion is that science is always asking questions and seeking to answer those questions, religion just has the one answer to everything. May their God have mercy on us all.
The Americans have pulled it off, very good re-make
As a fan of the Australian series, I held skeptical views that the Americans could pull it off. Since Kath and Kim went so horribly, the translation of Aussie/ British humor to US rarely works. And I sometimes get up set that American film producers feel the need to copy other countries ideas. Even though the American 'The Office' is not bad.
But they have taken this show in a different direction instead of making a complete remake. They 'Americanized' it and it definitely works. Jason Gann (Wilfred) is the only guy who is able to pull off the character, as he created it. I do like Elijah Wood as the poor bloke who is the only one who can talk to him. He has taken over Adam Zwar's humble character very well. Other characters like the girl who plays 'Wilfred's owner does a good job too. They have managed to get some well known extras like the guy from 'The Daily Show' and 'The Hangover' Ed Helms, big fan of his work. This show isn't for everyone, it is very strange, it has its Mr Ed on LSD qualities. The Australian version was very dark and politically incorrect, very candid, subtle, sometimes very humble in its approach but also had no need to tone anything down. The US version is similar but has been toned down abit. It does appeal to a large audience though; any one who is a fan of Doctor Do-little, or just loves dogs in particular or have ever looked into our canine friends eyes and known that there was a great intelligence there, will find the show very amusing as the Dog 'Wilfred' will say and do things that you could imagine your own dog would do if it was able to walk and talk like a human who loves smoking bongs. Im glad a little short Film from Australias own TropFest Film Festival would end up becoming a global cult series. I would of liked the Australian series to keep going though. Any Americans wondering the origins of the show should watch the you-tube video; Wilfred Tropfest Finalist.. Humble beginnings..
Second half makes it one of the worst films of all time
I actually registered with IMDb just to write this review. I watched this 'film' the other day and was appalled that someone would have wasted millions of dollars and months of there time to make this crap. There are people dying in Africa and people are spending millions on this, lol, to a lesser extent promising film directors and writers are being over looked and stuff like this is being made... Sorry cannot contain rage. The movie actually starts off really well, but about 40 mins into the film it literally loses the plot, it just spirals out of control. Like a couple of stoners found half an excellent screenplay, skimmed the pages and then wrote the second half completely baked making it up as they went along, then made the film and then have it released without anyone actually seeing it. Please don't waste your time with this Hollywood tripe. the 2/10 stars goes towards the promising first half the film.
decent action/ adventure, awesome in 3D
The acting wasn't too crash hot, but i have red a lot of people bagging the Australian performances in this film. Even though Hollywood churns out heaps of garbage, all things considering i think this one was acceptable. Better than your average action/ thriller movie. don't have to think too much and the reality/ physics of the film was nearly perfect, having seen the film with an actual diver who confirmed most of the scenes. you go to see this film for the action and the great claustrophobic diving scenes which are excellent in 3D. If you enjoy diving or just find cave diving interesting then definitely see this film
