Manchester by the Sea (2016)
A depressing film that also offers no closure
Spoilers ahead!!! Its one of those films that requires no climax to deliver what it truly wants, something that doesn't sit well with a lot of moviegoers. Manchester by the Sea is the story about a man battling melancholic depression due to his negligence that takes the lives of his 3 innocent children.
For those who see his character as not having any redeeming qualities to sympathize with, you should also learn to appreciate films where the lead role doesn't always walk into the sunset. This film hits a new level of realism that I truly appreciate as it sends out a message that people do not often have the power to "beat it" as in the lines of Lee himself. And if you still find it hard to digest, just for one second, try to picture yourself in this poor man's shoes. The tragedy that befalls him may quite simply happen to any one of us.
Although some may find its pace a little too slow, I did not find the movie boring at all. If you are not okay with watching movies without Shyamalan twists let alone depressing ones without a climax, please go watch a re-run or something, you will be thoroughly disappointed.
Don't Breathe (2016)
What a joke!
This movie gave out the vibe of an intense thriller but ended up being a low grade slasher flick. Utterly disappointing! Money's character was the most annoying, he was acting as if the old man was not only blind but also deaf! and that's what got everyone in trouble. Although Stephen Lang did an okay-ish job, his character had a few flaws:
- He could sniff the smell off of their shoes from a mile away but couldn't do the same when they were inching right past his face.
- The locker that held his money actually showed the digits of the access code as they were being punched in. And that too in a large font!
- For his little sperm stunt to work, he actually had to know whether Rocky was ovulating, beforehand. How could he be so sure? (And that was a disgusting scene by the way)
Alex's character seemed pretty one dimensional, boring and underplayed. Rocky was there to just hold the plot together. Just when I thought this disaster of a movie was done, it left off setting up a sequel. I sincerely hope that doesn't happen!
The Conjuring 2 (2016)
Boring & Mundane wayward of clichés
I don't quite get the general air of positivism among the reviewers regarding this title. I don't understand how this movie stands out from the usual debacle of horror sequels. Its very predictable, exploits the usual jump scares and has all the general clichés of a horror flick. From creaking doors, possessed toys, demonic peekaboos, anti gravity shots to creepy 'grudge' kids running around, there was nothing new or interesting about it.
And, knowing the name of a demon gives you control over it? C'mon! That was a retarded plot device and not to mention the demon being dressed as a nun for some unexplained reason.
This genre needs some serious overhauling. What is disappointing is that these producers always stick with the textbook methods of scaring people which are slowly losing their charm. Someone has to start thinking out of the box.
