X-Men: First Class (2011)
X-Men - First Class is seriously First Class
After watching the first X-Men franchise and being very disappointed with the turn out of the trilogy and Origin: Wolverine, I was happy to hear that they were making a prequel but re-booting it.
The 'bromance' between Xavier and Magneto is believable whilst giving it some humour. To think that certain things didn't add up between this film and the X-Men trilogy is simply ridiculous. They decided to go their own way with it and not follow the previous (unsuccessful) franchise. Following the original comics more and introducing new characters.
The supporting cast is stellar, my favourite would be Banshee for his bravery and comical timing. Jennifer Lawrence does a terrific effort at playing Mystique when she was more fragile. You totally understand why she ends up siding with Magneto because of him telling her that she is beautiful without having to hide who she really is, especially with her age and her emotions that she is dealing with. Nicholas Hault is fantastic at the role of Beast, more so when he is in human form and you get the more gentle *nerdy* side of him which is the only thing I really liked in the previous films that Kelsey Grammar pulled off.
You sympathise with Magneto and his struggles after losing his mother, so when he behaves badly you end up forgiving him somehow and Xavier always knew there was a darker side to Magneto so wasn't to shocked to know that he would go his own way. At the end of the movie when they go their separate ways you understand why and that there isn't a war between Xavier and Magneto, they just have a different opinion on how they should live their lives.
I thought I would be setting myself up for a serious comic film about the end of a friendship but I found myself chuckling along to the dialogue which I was surprised to be happy about. You feel the pain for the characters (even the supporting cast) and you get excited with them for the high points.
The effects were Awesome! The costumes and sets were stunning which just enhanced the film even more.
Really hoping that they completely re-boot the series because there's a lot of fantastic young actors out there who are capable of making X-Men what it really is meant to be. As proved by the young cast in this one.
Top Marks! Congrats to Vaughan for making a compelling visual feast without forgetting the characters, the characters backgrounds or the plot (most films that have heavy action sequences tend to make things very difficult to follow).
Just watched and I'm ready to watch it again, and also I'm quite critical about films so this must be a corker of a film!!
