Dracula: Prince of Darkness (1966)
The opening of this movie shows the demise of Dracula from the first movie of the same name. This film drags some in my opinion until Dracula is raised by having his remains covered in the blood of an Englishman who is one of four idiots who stop at the castle. They had been warned not too but being modernists for that time ignore all the warnings. Even the one from the dead guys wife who had premonitions of evil. The wife is lured to the cellar where she is turned into a bride of Dracula. Now it is the younger couples turn. Oops not so fast, they use the cross to escape the castle, jump into a carriage and rush away. The carriage over turns and the young wife is knocked out. So far Dracula seems to be acting on nothing but animal instincts. He doesn't talk only hisses. Anyway the Bishop of the area comes across the scene and takes the couple to his abbey. The servant of Dracula is now shown driving a small wagon which is shown to have two coffins inside. Now I wonder just who is in them? Stopping at the abbey he tries to get shelter inside for the night but is denied. This puzzles me as I thought vampires could stand on Holy ground? Oh well what do I know? So Drac gets invited in by a nut case named Ludwig who is under his influence. The unconscious wife has recovered and opens a window to the bad guys. She gets bitten but the Bishop cauterizes it which saves her at least temporarily. The friars catch the woman vampire and stake her. So now we are down to just Drac, maybe. Ludwig helps Dracula kidnap the young wife and using the wagon race back to the castle where they will be safe. The Bishop and the husband go in pursuit, intercept the wagon, kill the driver. They save the wife but Drac's coffin slides inside the castle onto the frozen moat (?). He wakes as the husband comes to stake him, they fight for a short time, the wife takes a shot that misses but breaks the ice. Running water will kill him so he tries to run but the Bishop now uses the rifle to break up more ice and Dracula loses again.
The Woman in White (1948)
Not a ghost story. It is a story based on old Victorian ploys and plots. Gig Young is a youngish artist hired to instruct a rich man's niece in drawing. He is approached by a woman in white in the woods as he walks to his new assignment. She has escaped from an asylum where she has been placed to prevent her telling what she knows. She tells Gig of course. Sydney Greenstreet is the Count and he apparently has some kind of ESP. The whole plot of the movie is to get to a families wealth. The niece is mind controlled (?) into marrying a scoundrel who is in league with the Count to get the loot. Anyway the girl who looks a lot like the niece is killed by the Count's force, whatever it may be. So they use her body to substitute for the niece and there fore inherit the money. They then place the real wife in the asylum under the dead girls name. The Count"s wife is thought to be under control but she isn't. Gig returns for the funeral and since he is an artist he recognizes the body is not the wife. There are twists and turns and things work out. When the Count is killed by his wife and Sir Percy is killed in the streets everything is resolved and some live happily ever after (?).
Let Me In (2010)
It took me awhile to figure this one out. Never seen a vampire movie with such a young one. I guess they don't age once they turn?? Anyway Abby is an apparently perpetually teenage vampire. Her guardian procures the blood for her by draining bodies he has taken. Until that is he wrecks a car and douses himself with acid. I guess to destroy his features from the authorities. But he is not dead and gets taken to a hospital. She visits him in the hospital and sucks his blood before he plunges to his death out of the window. I don't know about you but I don't know of any hospitals that have upper story windows that open. Owen is an outcast schoolboy who befriends the little vampire. After she kills her guardian she goes to Owen's and climbs into bed with, I guess naked since Owen says so plus she id cold. Gee I guess she is of the undead. Of course since this is school there are the bullies and Owen is their target. They go to a frozen pond to play hockey, the bullies try and confront poor old Owen and he takes a metal pole and smacks the major bully upside the head. Cutting his thumb to form a pact with her she goes down to suck the blood off the floor. She goes totally vampire but runs from Owen. She does attack a woman out walking her dog. Owen sees the attack. He goes to her apartment and asks her point blank if she is a vampire. Her answer is that she needs blood. He also asks her how old she is and she says she is 12 but has been for a long time. There is a cop who is on the case and seems to be closing in. The bitten woman is in the hospital, wakes up and starts chewing on her own arm for blood. A nurse comes in and opens the curtains which causes the woman to burst in to flames. There is a rather strange relationship that forms between Owen and the little vampire. She takes off but leaves a note for Owen, the cop has finally tracked the address down and, apparently, without a warrant, breaks the door down, finds her, opens a curtain for light which wakes her up and she attacks and kills him. Owen sees all this. He is standing in the apartment when she comes up to him, covered in the cop's blood and hugs him. She then kisses him and tells him she has to go away. She leaves in a taxi. Poor old Owen his heart broken. The bullies try to strike one last time. They set a fire in a dumpster to get rid of the coach. Then grab Owen, throw him in the pool and tell him to hold his breath for three minutes or get cut. Turns out SHE has been watching over him and slaughters the four bullies. I guess you could call it poetic justice. The movie ends with Owen running away with the vampire in a trunk to protect her from sunlight I guess. This is definitely not the typical vampire movie. It actually has some pathos to it.
Okay this is a decently funny series so far. Cristela gets the gig here from her standup routines. Gabriel Inglesias appears in a supporting role as a fluffy man who is hot Cristela but she does not reciprocate. Christela is living with her sister and her husband and the sisters mommy. The husband does not want her there and makes it abundantly clear with some funny comments. Mommy is putting pressure on Cristela to date. There is a budding relationship between Cristela and another intern. They seem to be gradually realizing they have the same interests and goals. I expect this relationship to develop if the series continues. Since the other intern is a white guy I expect a lot of what is wrong with a Latino jokes. So far I will keep watching this show.
The Oranges (2011)
Suppose to be a comedy-drama but there sure isn't much comedy. Kind of a downer movie in my opinion. Two families who are best friends but the parents have all fallen into the middle age I am not in love with you rut. One father whose wife admits she just ignores him is now sleeping in the den. They have a daughter and a son. The daughter is kind of a slug the son is in China for awhile. So any way the other family has a daughter (go figure) and ignored dad hooks up with her. His wife leaves, finds a calling in giving livestock to foreigners, and still ignores those she shouldn't. The dad's daughter has tremendous anger over the hook up and since she lives at home still this leads to some tenses scenes since the other daughter and her were best friends for years. Any way the movie ends with the girl cutting ties with everyone and going to Europe, her parents have gotten much closer during this crisis, slugo finally moves out of the house, which actually brings her and daddy closer, and the son, well not much is really done with his character.
This is obviously an old school horror movie from Hammer Studios. It starts out a little slow but picks up as it goes on. One of the opening scenes is a bit confusing with one of the archeologists tied to two posts. A nomad (?) shows and knifes the guy and then cuts off his left hand. The hand and knife show up a little later in the research teams tents. Discovering the tomb of an Egyptian prince. They excavate the tomb find the mummy and other artifacts. The financial sponsor for the dig, an American showman, decides to take the whole shebang on a tour of America. Well it leads to several dead witnesses of the opening of the sarcophagus. Turns out Ra's younger brother who actually responsible his murder has been cursed with eternal life unless Ra kills him with his own hand. Well this happens and taking the necklace with the "Words of Life" on it he then destroys himself.
Haunted High (2012)
Okay I can see why this movie got such poor overall ratings. It is pretty hokie but it is entertaining enough. Danny Trejo is in this one as the janitor protector for the cursed school. He ain't bad. It all starts when an obsessed teacher keeps a coin that has fallen out of a students hand. This brings the bad guys back and the mayhem starts. Students and teachers get killed right and left when the original headmaster and his demon bitch are let loose. As part of the final showdown Trejo is killed by the grandson who has been possessed by granddad the headmaster. Destroying one ring the demonic female (?) is destroyed. But as with most movies the good guys win in the end. The grandson is un-possessed, Trejo appears out of the spirit world and takes grandpa down, and the gold demon coins are destroyed so it can never happen again.
From a visceral standpoint a heck of a good movie. Revenge from Murphy for his murder by the thugs, the return of at least some humanity to Robocop from Nancy Allen. When Robocop goes in to the drug lab he is looking for the ones who "killed" him. He takes out I don't know how many of them, goes after the number two man, Dick Jones, at OCP. This is where directive four comes in to play, any attempt to arrest a senior OCP officer will lead to shut down. Going to arrest the smarmy faced Dicky Robocop overcomes the shut down, encounters the Robocop upgrade, goes to the basement where the upgrade can not handle the stairs, gets the crap shot out of him by human cops, is rescued by Nancy Allen. Kurtwood Smith is really good as the A hole crime thug. I love it when he gets his. Nancy Allen brings Robo tools, food, and weapons. Getting some military grade weapons the thugs go after Robo thinking they have the upper hand. I guess they forgot to read the script. They get picked off one by one but of course Kurty runs away, Nancy chases, he crashes and is finally killed. So Robo goes to arrest the Dickey but can't until he is fired. Gee guess what happens now? Dicky not only gets shot to pieces but is blown out a very high window.
The Big Store (1941)
This is another good one by the Marx Brothers. A young singer, named Tommy Rogers, inherits a department store. This store is up for sale by him and the proceeds will help to build a conservatory for young kids. The store manager is a crook who is planning to kill the inheritor, marry Martha Dumont since she will get the store after the murder, kill her off and get the store for himself. Oh there is a bleached blonde tart but she does not realize she is superfluous to the plan. The scene in the store with the Italian family with all the kids is excellent. So funny,IMO. Of course it is politically insensitive by today's standards. This makes it even funnier to me. I am so tired of the PC people. Laugh at life because it laughs at you. Anyway this is a good flick and of course as typical for the time the good guys win again.
Go West (1940)
Okay not all of the Marx Brothers movies were really funny. This is not true, in my opinion, for this movie. The scene at the train station when the three are trying to buy tickets west is classic. Then they all get out west and of course it is one joke after another. The scene in the Indian camp is probably considered to be non-politically correct today, especially since all the Indians are obviously white and speak gibberish. I don't care any more. It has some funny lines and the music is great. If you can not take a joke don't watch, again my opinion. These brothers were sooo musically talented it still surprises me when I watch their movies. Anyway a pretty good film and of course the good guys, gal too, win in the end.
