Little Joe (2019)
Terrible Screenwriting
I don't feel there is anything else that needs to be said other than the heading, but I'll give some highlights just the same:
Scientist takes experimental plant home, tells her superiors about it, and is barely even verbally reprimanded.
Password to experimental lab is THE SAME F*%#ing THING AS THE NAME OF THE SUBJECT WITHIN THE LAB. Can't get much stupider than that without just showing someone type in "password" to gain access.
Person accessing aforementioned lab was teenager that had no trouble getting in (not so shocking, though, considering the apparently lax security).
When viewing security footage from the previous beak in, those reviewing the footage manage to notice a single plant missing, but for some reason no footage exists of the perpetrators.
Neverlake (2013)
Nope.
I would say it had potential, but that's being too generous. Nothing ever really takes off, and the ultimate direction the story takes ends up being predictable. The supernatural elements are all incidental - they could have just as easily done the whole movie without them.
The characters are all pretty one dimensional, especially the father. I was hoping to see a hidden side with him as the movie progressed, but he turned out to be exactly what I expected.
I noticed people have mentioned the scenery/setting. It's nice, I guess, but it just makes me realize another big problem with the story/characters: there's a big problem with the size of the house and the amount the main character is allowed to see (which of course, she conveniently never questions).
Aniara (2018)
2/3rds of the movie is decent, but the final act is one of the worst I've seen in a long time.
The movie isn't bad; it's worth your time to check out if you're into sci-fi. It's got good acting as well.
The problem is the last part of the movie. Not because of story - there is an interesting plot element that should have been explored more - but because the filmmakers seem to have no sense of how to build to a climax. Most of the last few scenes consist of characters wandering around doing mundane things like brushing their teeth. I'm not exaggerating: within the last 12 minutes of the film, the main character literally stops to brush her teeth. Go watch it if you don't believe me.
It's a shame that the movie fizzles out like that. I really was enjoying it up until it lost all its momentum.
